In the unlikely event you’re looking to add a bit more misery and pain to your life
Yearning, for an uptick in anxiety.
Unexplained fears lurking on the borders of your consciousness.

Divide your attention over as many things as possible, and change those things as often as you can.

But if you’re looking for the opposite?
Work in a fully engaged manner.

It was someone whom I held in high-regard, although their scatteredness had already struck me as being somewhat of an Achilles heel in their teachings.

That although of course professionals of all kinds have the same right to make a mess of their private lives;
With the ones whom associate themselves with giving life and lifestyle advice, spillovers into their work stand out more prominently.

If my heating mechanic has been on a bender the night before, I could not care less as long as he fixes my kettle.
But if it was my GP, I would need to contemplate what my thoughts are on this.
If I think it conflicts with the values and standards I want my GP to have, or if I think it would affect the quality of their work.

And I would look at it from different angles.
Because although it might be tempting to say a family doctor should never have a hangover, since a good part of their patients will be taking alcohol, having no part in that does influence their ability to relate to what’s normal.

However, again, if it was a mechanic and not a doctor, I would forget about the whole thing as soon as my central heating system was up and running again.

So the fact that this was a professional whom, much like a doctor, has something to say about health and lifestyle, did put them in the more challenging category.
The one we tend to be less forgiving, and raise the bar for.

What happened is that I saw their personal, in my opinion flawed, lifestyle not just spilling over into their work;
But actually being advocated.

So they were not just showing signs of it, they were promoting it.

And the thing that was being promoted was basically to do two things at the same time.
One for your body, and one for your mind.

I have seen it in different forms too, where instead of doing it exactly at the same time, you make them really really small.
So then instead of doing this thing, whatever it is, and give it the time it needs and deserves, you give it 5 minutes or 15 minutes.
Squeezing it all in.

Just as bad.

I’m not saying you should never do that, but that doing so should at least be a very conscious and preferably temporary choice.
Or with the intention that even though it is only 5 or 15 minutes, you will give it your full attention.
But that’s a conscious choice then, for short “atomic habits” style things.

But if you’re actually doing two things at the same time, giving it your full attention is an impossibility altogether.

And in my opinion nothing good can come of that.
Consciousness must always be in the moment, engagement must be full.
And preferably both of them are in the body.

So although being fully absorbed in your computer work (what is referred to by Cal Newport as Deep Work) is also more gratifying and can lead to feelings of wholeness and happiness, it’s still a hard landing afterwards.
Because there was no one “home” in your body for hours.

The best way of being completely in the human experience, is to have your attention with what is it you do, and that the activity has an active physical component.
Even if it is just standing up on your feet instead of sitting.

However!
This physical component needs to be tied to what it is you do.

A painter moves around in their studio.
But if they would setup their canvas or, more likely, their digital creation device, on top of a treadmill, the activity of walking has nothing to do with the work they are doing.

The analog painter walks around their studio in an organic way, it’s integral to their work.

So if you want to improve your life drastically, start with culling everything that is not whole, or that even interferes with the wholeness of other things that would have been whole if it wasn’t for:
-the scrolling
-the messaging
-the call
Or even: the 5 minute workout
In my experience if I interrupt my deep work at the computer to do exercises that are supposed to help me physically, it dramatically takes away my concentration.
And satisfaction.
The quality of my work plummets if I start cutting in, regardless if it is for Instagram or squats.

Beware, in this age where even the ones who you trust with your health advocate methods where your attention can no longer land, be, reside, wander;
Chill, play, stall, and laugh;
With the rest of you.

1. the earthly plane
Your possessions, worldly matters, income streams, worries and responsibilities you fear you can’t meet.
A helpful term could be how do things look from the perspective of financial freedom, or worldly freedom.

2. your purpose
What is the work you love doing, what are the moments big or small, that you know you are aligned. Has God told you, what you’re here for?
This is about creative freedom, or even karmic freedom.
Are you free to do the work, that is yours?

3. your Rock Star expansion
What is the fullest expression you are here to bring?
And what are the areas you’re playing small, as if cut off from your powers?
We investigate if in those areas, the rules you play by are yours, or society’s.
“3” is related to sexual freedom.
Like anything, it is up to you if that is part of our conversation or not.

Because all three points are just a suggestion, they offer a good framework providing one hour for every topic, to go deeper looking for answers.
But the setlist is not fixed.

I have merely built the stage for us, and we have three hours.

It is up for you to take it.
