“They’re both old, and I still haven’t done them”
I would say to Suzanne 2023.
Because they are.
Although one of them has definitely cleared up a lot. It should not be such a big deal for me anymore to tackle it (it’s clearing out the basement).

And although I still agree with Suzanne 2023;
I would also argue or reassure her that the KNOWING you’re out of integrity, is really what’s doing the magic here.
Not the acting on it.

The not-being in integrity is in your sloppy, messy, annoyed, I-can’t-even, thoughts about it.
Not in the “it” itself.

In other words: I would say awareness is what brings integrity.
Not the action.

A cleared basement is out of integrity if it was attained by not attending to other more important duties.
Or if you bully your family members into keeping it clean.

It reminds me of when we lived abroad when I was a child. The children of a bunch of families regularly played outside, unsupervised.
And we were given a couple of rules, from which I remember only one, probably because we systematically broke it;
We were not supposed to turn over any rocks, because there could be snakes and scorpions underneath.

With this in mind, we took turns turning the stones, with the other children at safe distance.
The one who turned the stone, flipped it over, immediately fleeing back.
Tiptoeing we’d make our way back, to see what was there.

“We always we were always turning rocks…” I said to my mother, when we were already back in the Netherlands.

She paused then said:
“But you were careful though.”

She had never told me what to do;
She had learned me to be aware.

I have to say, I was a bit stunned at how much I needed to hear this message, 2.5 years after writing those opening words…

As if I pulled a super-matching oracle card from a deck I do not own, or Instagram served me a post from an unknown account.
And I saved it as background picture for my phone:
“My luck! This is just what I need!” 

Because the times they are achanging.
And I am at that point where you have your swimming cap and goggles on, at the edge of the pool.
Taking a very deep, slightly hurdled and emotional breath, knowing this is the only way forward.

The management summary is this:
My work will be limited to 40h a week, including content creation.
And this is new.

My creativity has always come first, but because of this my workhours have gotten completely and utterly out of hand.
In particular if I include what I will call:
“Creative loss.”
Which is being “sidetracked” by my creative mind, which cannot function in a minimalist productivity environment.

Creativity needs wandering, and in my case that wandering was often online.
The tabs on my computer have been like windows to the world, and I no longer want that;

I want my window to be 100% connected to real people!

And then, maybe, a tiny bit to education too. But very targeted, very specific.
And within the 8 hours.

And at 18.00?
This window will close.
On weekends?
Dito.
To give more breathing room to my social life, but also;
To start curating my 20 year big body of work.

*soft sigh*

A task of Herculean proportions.

And a journey that starts like all the others, with a single step or an insecure dive.

And more often than not;
Alone.

For those of us who still remember the thrill of putting a cassette tape back together, winding it up with a pencil;
But also for those who burned their own CDs.

The ones who experienced weekends that stretched into eternities.
Yet were always closed with that astringent Sunday night.

Were hit by the single spark that turned a peer into a lover.
All ingredients had been there all along, but you didn’t see it until the opportunity was served to you on a platter.
An unexpected moment of sweetness.

We have a choice to make whether we bother to recreate these recipes, now that we may still be able to find the ingredients.

Because the rich, tactile, physical experience of being our own sovereign being without being connected through our phones;
It will not return by itself.

But retrieval will come at tremendous cost.
We will not get a good deal on this, and be paying full price.

What are you willing to sacrifice, to gain the full flavor of your life back?

Your connection to the digital world?
Series you have been able to make smalltalk with?
Being up to date on the news?

Recording your life as if it’s a performance?

Because I suspect it’s all still there under the watery surface and the stale overcooked pulp.

The delicacy of the moments that feel like a lifetime.
The transitory, feeding us tender bites that melt on our tongue.
The fumes penetrating our clothes.

Will you leave behind the life that forced you to consume so shallow?
Your body and all its senses starving.
And you know what will happen if you fail.
Then this will be what life tastes like, until the end of your days.

Or will you start making proper meals, once more?

I sometimes wonder what will happen if it doesn’t amount to anything. If no one will remember my work, or worse, if I lose the work.
Through an internet fallout, just like in the movie Bladerunner 2049, clearing all data we have ever stored.
Or, less futuristic, if a fire or a flood destroys all my notebooks, both the paper ones as well as my computer notebooks.
How will I cope?
What will it mean?

Rutger Hauer, the actor who played in the original Bladerunner in 1983, documented his life and kept memorabilia of all the films he was involved with.
They were all stored in Los Angeles yet they were all lost in a flood.
All the careful collecting and documenting did not amount into a record of his life or teachings, the way he had intended.

Now obviously this does not mean it was in vain. But with the broader purpose of serving those who came after him gone, its meaning can now only be found in the personal, and no longer in the public.

And it makes you wonder: Does a future audience even exist?
Or are these mirages we cling to in order to avoid confronting our own desires?
Which could be deemed self-centered.

However, what we do know with certainty is that Rutger Hauer became the most well-known Dutch actor who ever lived. And that even without the personal archive it is not hard to see he built it with his own impressive, bare hands.
Deliberately, but with a lot of trial and error, painful lessons and sacrifice.

Focusing on the project at hand, week after week, month after month, year after year.
Today’s work, not tomorrows legacy.
He built what could not be washed away, burned nor buried.

His character Roy Batty dies in Bladerunner with the prophetic words:
“All those moments will be lost in time.” 

Or maybe they never will.

Definitely the right moment to find this “writing prompt”!
You get it straight from the horse’s mouth because I can count myself one life experience richer, concerning the allure of the mediocre.

If they ever get the biblical story fact checked, I think they’ll discover the snake seduced Eve not with education but with a one-way ticket to a mediocre life.
Something to which Adam was immediately on board with as well.

And ironically I think I was so quick to catch this one, like a hair in my soup, because of the extra years since writing the opening paragraph.

So even though it were my words, learning to recognize the danger of the mediocre is something you can always get better at.
This time it was about a business card I had designed, for a new profession.
On the back I printed a futuristic, Blade Runner-like composition, a vibe I had chosen for this profession.

It was more than a graphic design choice because this represented my mission:
I want my work to still stand, in a post-apocalyptic world.

The cyber-punk image on the back of my business card was a promise, a testament and a warning:
“We’re going to build for it to hold.”

I also tied my business card to my location: Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
Indicating where I am geographically speaking, but also where my focus will be.
Nijmegen got its city rights in the year 98.

My job will be to make sure it holds another 2000 years.

I showed it and the response to the picture on the back, was that it was not professional.

Professional, Rock Star, will get you the job.
Lose everything you stand for.

And it will be our downfall.

I thought I still owned a copy, but unpacking the box that held all my unused business and mindset books, I could not find it.
I must have settled for knowing I already had the collected works of Florence Scovel Shinn, so that there was no need to hold on to the single book, The Game of Life And How To Play It.
Originally published in 1925.

I would have preferred to compare, and seeing that first sentence in double, but we will have to do with one.
“Many people consider life a battle,” Florence Scovel Shinn writes.
“But it is not a battle, it is a game.”

And one I started to understand a little bit better, as I cleared shelves so I could display all those unearthed business and mindset books.
I wanted them nearby, even though I stopped both mindset work a long time ago, and no longer see myself as an entrepreneur either.

So I spent the half hour it took me to get everything sorted, wondering:
“Why do I want these books nearby?”

And came up with two answers.
Which conveniently can both be tied to the idea of A Game.

First of all, I realized that I had indeed seen mindset practices as well as entrepreneurial practices, as a game.
That these books represent something I love, not something I need.
I love them just like I love Bon Jovi’s 2024 behemoth book “Forever”.

And the second was that these books were the closest I had to making a concept actionable, which I have been toying with since last year.
And that I expect to become my core message.

I’m obsessed with viewing life and in particular processes, through the lens of an apocalypse.
Symbolizing any mayhem that might uproot our systems.

Before anything, ask yourself:
“What are we looking at here?
How delicate is this thing, I’m about to commit to?”

The ultimate player can still play when A stands for apocalypse.

A Twin Flame. Soulbond. And other concepts which also came up, as I engaged in the pleasure of deciphering what it all means!
The men.
The crushes.
And how it’s always the same men who made a real mark.

In the realm of soul twin jargon, which I did not learn until recently, regular relationships have an entirely different status.

I would describe them as more tangible, but also more pliable. Susceptibel to improvement. And they’re happily tied to all kinds of structures such as family, friends and other social networks, but also to government organizations slash, institutions.

F.e. in the Netherlands a Living-Together contract has the same status as marriage.
Effectively, and involuntarily, tying the knot for couples still on the fence when migrating here from abroad.
Foreshadowing that here all formally acknowledged relationships are treated equally.

Yet soul bonds, on the other hand, do not require anything to survive.
Not words, not confessions, not declarations, not visibility, and no paperwork.

But despite being so ethereal, I do think even soul bonds can be undone.

The method I have seen working, multiple times actually, is when you fall in love, choose, but most importantly have sex with your soul bond’s friend. Preferably their best friend but definitely without informing the soul bond.
Boom! A nuclear blast.

And there may be other methods, which I don’t know. However normal breakups do not work for soul bonds. Not even when followed by no contact for years in a row.

If anything, the (telepathic?) bond becomes more pure, more intense.

Because what is really made in heaven, cannot be undone by Man.
Not unless you’re prepared to bring extremely big guns.

What I can add 2.5 years after writing those sentences is that they’re still valid. Yet although I cannot name new social media or other digital sorcery that may now permeate your carefully created walls more than before;
I do think something has made our jobs harder.

But what, right?
The news, the wars, the mayhem?
A multitude of global threats closing in?

What is it, that has shifted so dramatically to our detriment that I’m pretty sure I’m right on this one, yet cannot name it?
Don’t know…

But walling off to concentrate on your creative work has become more difficult, and many would argue irresponsible.
This comes from the idea that art is always created in conversation with the world.
The art of walling off is also about choosing which parts of the world to let in.
And about which parts of your own story, or your own suffering, to share. In particular when they are tied to larger events, or to a broader audience.

And yet, devil’s advocate here, I always regretted it when I did. I totally understand the stance that artists are the most logical choice to interpret and make sense of our times.
Make records of it.
Yet when I did tie my work to my personal experiences, or to a particular hook on current events, it ultimately never aged well.

Not even when what I had made had helped people. It sounds so selfish to admit that the content was feeling meaningless despite knowing it had been of tremendous value.
Yet, maybe, this reveals the point.

That it’s not about whether your work is hailed or rejected. But to create simply, and only, what you are called to, on that particular day.
To never ever look back.

And to trust that the walls will hold.

I don’t know if I just didn’t get the memo, or if it was a generational thing and will automatically be ingrained in later generations, but I didn’t have a clue about how patriarchy worked or capitalism, until shockingly late in life.

And although I’m sure there’s nuances which I will never be able to understand because my brain is no longer flexible enough to attain mastery here;
I did land on two simple rules of thumb which, so far, got me through.

One.
Anything of value, is in your own time.

And two, which I usually ignore because it’s just so bleak:
That all aggression and criminal behavior go unpunished when ran over existing power structures.
Being held accountable for your crimes basically means you are committing crimes above your paycheck.

Like I said: Bleak.
And that I’m possibly missing a few nuances here.

Compare it to medieval bestiaries where the giraffe has a short neck, the whale looks like a fish and the hyena is a horned cow who digs up people from their grave.
In the same way, my view of how capitalism and patriarchy work is more the product of a rich imagination, and less about facts.

I cannot offer you an accurate evolutionary theory on patriarchy, anymore than a medieval bestiary depicts anatomically correct beasts.

But I can offer you this:

Your survival depends on awareness that patriarchy and capitalism exist.
And having a broad idea of what it looks like.

One day the Darwin of capitalism will rise and rescue us with an Evolutionary Theory. But until then, it is up to us to collect pictures of the beast and learn what we can.
Who has a long neck and eats away above our head.
Who harvests the oceans.

Who will feed of our corpse straight from the grave.

Someone told me we’re starting a new 8 year long cycle.
Although I have not been able to track exactly what the astrological profiles of this year are, two search results immediately caught my eye:

The year is considered a “Universal Year 1”, because of its numerology.
2+0+2+6=10= 1+0 = 1
It’s about to give us a complete reboot, no exception (because it’s “universal”).
By the end of this year, none of our lives will be the same.

And in February, notoriously slow moving planets Neptune and Saturn will be coming together in Ares (the first sign of the Zodiac) for the first time in 36 year.
And aside from their slow moving nature and both representing a male energy;
These two planets are definitely on two opposing sides of the spectrum personality wise!

Saturn represents structure, karma, the inevitable. It represents a truth that cannot be changed.
While Neptune represents not just delusion but also imagination and a boundless reality that spans across all dimensions and includes all beings, the living and the dead, and the unknown.

With these two opposing forces both coming together in Ares, the sign of the boisterous and brave Ram – the only one strong enough to save humanity’s ass right now because it keeps pushing forward without looking up nor back! – both our lives as well as our minds will be stretched to their breaking points.

I expect this year to be an equalizer (the “universal” aspect);
But also the year we have to choose what we want to save.

Saturn will demand us to be consistent and will hold us accountability for every choice;
And Neptune will clear what’s left, taking anything we’re wishy washy about into the depths of the ocean.

2026 is a year of reckoning.

ABOUT THE LOST POST SERIES

I have been consistently posting “What Do Rock Stars Need To Hear Today” for a while now.
Starting June 2023, they found their final form as blogposts here on the Catacombe blog, pretty quickly.

But I’ve always been aware there were singular posts/ borderline poetry, still on social media, floating somewhere down my timeline.

Some at the beginning when I did not know what this series would be.
Some around the time in October/November 2023, when I lost access to this site.
And then a few in between.

And in addition to that there are the ones I did post on the blog, but whose stories revolve around things I no longer offer.
I will retrieve those too;
And give them a new story, that has the timeless quality they deserve.
