I am not just talking about blowing up (as in enlarging, not as in taking down!) your actual work, your calling, your stage persona and your goals.

I’m talking about sitting with, and even creating, larger than life anything-
as a practice.

In my yoga classes, I often use a card deck called “Crazy Sexy Love Notes”, and one card says:
“Something bigger is on their way”
At which one of my students replied:
“Like what? My hips?”

And jokes aside, I am now at the point where I say:
Yes. Your hips.
My hips.

The clutter in my basement.
The piles of administrative load of which I have no idea where to begin.

But also:
Our dreams.
Our future.
Our values.

How can we expect to be comfortable and capable at handling big projects and just a big life in general, when on the other side of the spectrum we completely freak out, as soon as things start having considerable volume.
As soon as we hear something bigger, is on their way.

Lose your fear of size.
Train it.
Practice it.
Breathe through it.
Learn to be completely okay in the face of BIG things.

And then, even if it’s just a tiny bit, add to it….
Create something even bigger of the things that scare and intimidate you.

So that when the good stuff is on their way;
You know for a fact, you’re able to handle it.

You left the realm where you provided a service a long time ago.
And in all probability, you were never there in the first place.

Just that it seemed that way, because other people’s hands were going through the same motions.

One of the biggest misconception of all, and a tragedy in my opinion, is that the ones who have become one with their profession, with their area of expertise;
The ones who are known for what it is they do;
That they are in any way, still of the same plane, of what it is they do.

They are not.

If you would insist on putting them in a box, the skill this person does really well;
You’d find they combine plural areas of expertise.

That there is no One Thing, that made them into the face, benchmark or Rock Star of “their” industry.
There are several.

They weave skill, with meaning, with thinking;
They talk through their work louder, clearer and with a confidence not present in their everyday life.
A life they in all likeliness feel naked in, cannot wait to get away from, in order to bury themselves in what others think is their “work”.

By them, I mean you.

Stop apologizing for your art.
That’s why you keep coming back.
That’s why you love it more, than anything else in the world.

That’s why you’re better at it, than anyone else.

Yes, yes!
I know!
In ALL of its messiness and incomprehensible f* up ness….
All of its “why can’t I pick just one thing”-ness.

Stop, apologizing.

It’s the feature, not the bug.

Regardless of how profound somebody else’s system is, how inspiring or how deep its roots, making your words pale in comparison;
Say it anyway.

You are not here to judge your own work, nor someone else’s.

Every craft, every profession, and every community comes with its own culture, its own symbolism, values and dictionary.

Because of the simple fact that we are part of a set of those, there is an urge to express our work through the channels and in ways that are familiar not just to us, but to those around us.

A fearful, uneasy feeling to make it comply to the rules we grew up with, or rules that were imposed upon us.
In silence, usually no one takes responsibility, when crossing the line to abuse of power or stifling the voices of the next generation.

When I was drawn to yoga, the message had come to me in the form of Madonna (the Queen of pop, not the mother of Jesus) doing yoga.

I had been in contact with yoga from a very early age.
My mother did yoga, we had yoga books in the house, and I had gone to yoga as an early teen, for about a year.

It was either that or physical therapy, trading it for yoga was a no brainer.
But of course it did make me hate yoga.

When in 1998 a radiant Madonna showed the world her firstborn, her new album and rock hard yoga body, the first two were fantastic, but the last was life changing, and I became a yoga teacher.

But nothing that came after, came even close to the power of that initial message!
Which never had words either. It just was, expressed by Madonna’s body.

Yoga.

Your pure, unabridged, unfiltered, message, exactly as it is now;
Is someone’s Madonna yoga.

Life changing.

Because the work you can walk away from, without feeling like you just cut off a limb;
The stuff that you do not automatically start doing in every hour freeing up in your schedule;

Was never your job to begin with.

I was, or perhaps still am because you should never underestimate the power of this evil, as guilty as any creative to considering to QUIT, creating.
To still, catch myself being on the fence, about whether or not I was going to give my creativity the time it demands.
Skillfully ignoring, that creativity does not come with such a choice.

Yes, you can be on the fence of whether you want to go all in on monetizing your creativity. Setting it up in a way it allows you to walk away from a job you don’t like, or being able to accept only the work you like to do.
There is a choice, if you want to invest a portion of your creative time into this.
Setting up an income stream so you can have more creative time later.

But, what is not an option, is to walk away from your creative work.
It was given to you, like your eyes, your heart, your breath.

And on the fence is not a spot where one can safely be for too long.
Let along build a home there.

They’re not mine, they come from a coach named Katrina Ruth. She used them in courses and livestreams, in her older work I think around 2016, 2017.

1. Do you think you will ultimately make it?
2. Can you get through today?

A man becomes what he thinks about most. As does a woman of course.
This wisdom too is not from me but from an audio training from 1956 by Earl Nightingale.
And it points us to the unnamed, but very fundamental, foundation underneath the questions;
You need to know what to think about. You need to know where you’re going.

The first question can only be answered by those who know what they are actively aiming for.
The goal, in Earl Nightingale’s work.

In those years, Katrina Ruth’s audience consisted almost exclusively of women who had a business.
Of course they knew what “make it” meant, and of course they knew what they were aiming for.

I say “of course”, but in the Netherlands, for entrepreneurs this is actually not Built-IN.
In particular independents, because from the outside it looks like they’re doing the same work as professionals with a payroll job.

After spending years of studying business in the online space, I realized that the secret to their success, and the difference between the struggling energy of local independents, had little to do with infinite (technological) possibilities of the digital world;
And everything, with how online entrepreneurs saw themselves.

As professionals with a goal.
A purpose.
A message that they were here to tell THROUGH their work (yes), but also through their business.
The business was a message in itself.

To actively pursue a worthy ideal, is what creates success according to Earl Nightingale.

Making the first question a reminder of your most precious possession;
A goal.

And with that you can always, make it through the day.

Said Galadriel to Frodo, but she may have reminded any of us.

“But I do not own a ring of power,” I hear you say.
But you do.

To have a purpose is to own a ring of power, because you now know where you’re going.
An advantage few of us have.
And a road, few of us take.

You can find companionship at the foot of the mountain, and in the inns of the villages you cross.
But the way itself is dangerous.

Even if you left with nine, the fellowship will break, and ultimately you’ll end up side by side, with that one person that was always there.
Unshakable.

Just like Frodo you may even mistake them for an enemy at one point, something you will feel ashamed of later.

But even if you don’t, and you appreciate and feel grateful for the people walking alongside of you, for however long your time together is;
The burden is always yours to bear.

Alone.

Venus moved into Scorpio

From the 4th to the 29th of December the planet of love and relationships is in the sign that governs complex emotions;
And fosters an intimate connection to the dark side.

Five years ago, I had my chart read by a real life astrologer.

Within my new yoga company de Club these group classes are not my core business,
and the reason I offer them at this stage already, is because I got an opportunity to rent such a great space, and on Monday night;
It really was now or never!

However, what I was not prepared for, was how being back teaching yoga at night time made me feel….
At home.

I felt grateful, and I was at peace, more than I have been in years.

And I realized this is not just me, this is all who think and know what it takes to succeed in a worldly sense, and as an entrepreneur or artist.

We forget we never came here for the result.

We came here to be a living and breathing *insert your profession*;

Everything you invest in supporting systems, in platforms, and even in marketing, that does not make your heart sing?

One more thing you can trip over.
One more thing keeping you from living the life you want.

Herman Brood was a rock star in the Netherlands, and he maintained his public persona really well. He struggled with drugs and alcohol throughout his life, yet he kept taking care of the way he presented himself.

Dying his hair, choosing the right clothes, taking care of his teeth.
He was also soft-spoken and friendly, you would have been hard-pressed to find anybody who did not like him.

I consider the way he showed up for his audience, which in his case was almost everybody because he was so famous and he was recognized in the streets like any celebrity; I consider that, the ideal way each and everyone of us should show up in our business.
It was, although I doubt he would have called it that, amazing marketing.

We were all in love with him, and he could have sold us anything.
And he did.

Because Herman Brood was a painter. And he had been to art school too, just that his music career had taken off before the art did. But later in his life he got back to painting and drawing.

Now here’s why Herman Brood is such a great example of learning how to get back to the barebones of doing business;

Herman Brood could paint something, walk out on the streets, and sell it. 

-> Zero <- systems.

I believe that ideally we should be able to sell like that.

And sure.
If Herman Brood had had a website, an Etsy account, a PayPal and an Instagram?
He would have sold MORE.

But he was an example of what pure, virtuoze selling looked like.

If there was an option to be wired for freedom, for expansion, for growth;
For knowing the truth and the obligation to act in accordance with it;
No one in their right mind would take it.

Which is why it was never an option.
It was given.

When I started my company Catacombe, earlier this year, I still thought I would speak to three types of clients, not one.
Next to those with a Rock Star attitude on life, I could really understand those who were artists, and felt a need to create;
As well as business owners, and how they were motivated by serving their customers well.

As long as someone felt a calling and a purpose, I knew I was the right person for them.

However, I ate my words there.
Within half a year I reversed my decision.

Because the thing they could not NOT do, the choice they did NOT have;
Was an entirely different one.

A called and inspired artist cannot NOT make art, and a purposeful business owner cannot NOT sell and be of service or connect with their clients.
They recognize their path, their dharma, the thing they are here for on this earth.
Life itself flows through them, the moment they do their aligned work.

Whereas having a Rock Star attitude comes with the innate knowing that not only are we Free;
We also have the obligation, to exercise that freedom.

That freedom cannot be a theoretical concept, which we can sideline when a piece of art is coming through, or a business is being built, or clients want to be served.

Our freedom must first be guaranteed.

Or, alternatively, lack thereof acknowledged, an identification we are now under command, and that we lost the one thing we know we cannot live without.

Freedom.
