So unless it’s part of your art, it’s not your job.

And if it is?
There’s only one option.

Make it art.

The truth is, I don’t have the final version of how artists (in general) are supposed to leverage it all, come 2025.
Where art starts and where it stops and the havoc of commercialism begins.

I do not have a final lecture on how to handle making a living when your work, together with all the other things that give our lives meaning, was never included into capitalism.
And has been passed around like a hot potato from one marginalized group to the next, or from one privileged figure in society to the next, for thousands of years.
Always without a natural home.

So no finalized list, no artist’s manifesto.
All I can say is that, like with many things, the more you know the more you’re aware of how little you know.

Suffice to say, I m sharing the little that I know, while still being aware I will probably need to eat my words again.
And that’s okay.

So artist, performer;
What is it that you do, and why are you not a Swiss train conductor?

The title is a quote from the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. It is what Freddie Mercury says to his bandmates when he’s being called out for arriving late at the studio.

“I’m a performer Darling, not a Swiss train conductor.”

There is a children’s book by Leo Leonni, about another Freddie, called Frederick.

It is about a mouse who does not seem to work. When the other mice are collecting food for the winter, Frederick collects colors and sunbeams.

And deep into winter, when the food is all but gone and their tiny bodies are cold from the harsh temperatures, they call upon Frederick.
“How about your supplies?” they ask.
And Frederick starts speaking.

About the seasons and about the sun shining warmly on their furs.

Little by little the mouse begin to feel better, their cheeks rosy and their minds brimming with memories and the promise of better times.

As a performer, your art is everything that enables you to be there, even when the other systems have come to a halt.
And even if that means that in the pre-art phase little is visible, and the people around us may not be as understanding as the mice from Frederick’s community.
Or we less eloquent than Frederick, or Freddie Mercury, in explaining what it is we do.

The moment we start measuring our success (or worse: value) by whether we are as accurate as a Swiss trainconductor, or as productive as the other mice whose lives in the heart of winter will be dependent on whether or not we have nourished our artistic capacities;
That, is the moment we kill our art.

So can we then not be more productive?
Can we not be accurate and reliable?

You can if you make it part of your art.
I don’t know, maybe Frederick could have color coded the stock.
Or Queen could have set up their studio days in a more colorful fashion, around certain themes, fancy dress codes and with guest musicians to collaborate with.  

In the same way you can incorporate activities or areas of life that are difficult to skip or neglect without being an asshole, into your creative work.

Just never forget what you are here for, and what will be needed from you most, is your warming light;
Your bright colors;
Your words;
And your poetry.

the truth isn’t out there

Contrary to that famous tagline of the 90s television series The X-Files;
the truth is out there

Detective Mulder also had a UFO poster with “I want to believe” pinned to the wall of his  office.
To believe in the truth, I presume.

But every new discovery only ever lead  to one thing;
Another villain.

Just a bit higher up.

I have no idea how much I told you, about everything I did during the pandemic. The years before it, and the years since.
Until I finally hit the brick wall and concluded;
The truth is a dead end street.
All you will ever find is a lie, which is not the same as finding the truth.

The truth, in an evidence based scientific way, does not exist.
There are only those who lie consciously, and those who lie unconsciously.
And although both can be used negatively, they can also both be used positively.

Truth is created by consciousness.
Including the consciousness of the narrator.

So if you find a situation and then tell what you see, you are adding to its existence.
It was mother Theresa who said she would not march against war, but she’d rally for peace.
Because you cannot give something your attention and expect it to go away.

There is a healing technique called Hoʻoponopono, where the practitioner heals by taking responsibility for seeing sickness.
For taking part in it, and by revoking that power and seeing health and healing instead.

Those are examples of what I would define as positive, “conscious lying”.

The practitioner claims something that is not congruent with the truth, as we experience it at that moment. But they have intentionally reversed the truth in order to create the desired effect.
They consciously choose the lie of the affirmation of the positive, in order to create this positive.

Still sticking to positive uses of lying, there is also unconscious lying.
Which can be just as beneficial. 

Here “unconscious” means that the speaker is unaware that they are creating the truth with their words and their thoughts.
And because of that, their most powerful contribution to the world remains hidden, even to themselves.

We all know that person or family, whose house radiates love, laughter and joy;
Yet they claim to not do anything special and that it’s often “a real mess”.

Many of us had or have that one colleague without whom work would have been a dreadful place.
It’s like they alchemize the atmosphere, into one of positivity and constructive cooperation.

Perhaps we have, or had, that special person who infused our life with a deep sense of meaning.

Yet rarely will either one of them be conscious of what it is they do.
They wouldn’t be able to explain and are largely unaware of the profound effect they have on the lives of others.

They do not know their own truth of the light they bring.

So instead of believing in truth, reason, science, or facts;
It is a much better strategy to believe in love.
And to understand that the truth is not out there.
It is within.

Truth can be found within yourself, but also in the hearts of others.
Where like a true treasure it is hidden.

Even from the ones who carry it.

We cannot escape it, for it is present even in our loved ones.
And, you guessed it;
In ourselves.

It can enter if we leave but one door open. One area, where we allow ourselves the luxury of being in the dark and- BOOM!

For Christ’s sake;
Know what you’re dealing with.

I’m not too big on organized religion, but I’ll give them one thing;
At least they know what they’re dealing with.
There is a concept of Evil, something which has been dangerously missing from most spiritual lineages which emphasize union, light and love.

And I get it; If for 2000 years the most sordid crimes and systemic oppression has taken place in the name of the Lord, you’re not exactly keen on taking Christian ideas on board on the nature of good and evil.
In particular not when they can be linked directly to keeping the rich rich, the poor poor, and to keeping everyone not a white male the furthest away from power as patriarchy allows.
Which seems to have unlimited give, in that area.

But just because evil preaches about evil, and uses fear of it for its own gain, that does not mean evil itself does not exist. Nor that evil was ever limited to the people who had so effectively weaponized it.
Quit the opposite.

We must see human history as proof, that evil exists.
The least we can do is learn from history, even if it is just in its most generally-agreed-upon interpretation.

Looking back, and with an endgame against evil sorely missing, it should come as no surprise evil was allowed to endure, in the words of Lord of the Rings.

Perhaps because someone always takes the ring of power before it can be cast into the fires of Mount Doom;
Or perhaps because unlike in folklore, evil cannot be destroyed.

Whatever the reason, now is the time to look around you, or look into history and to judge for yourself;
Do you think Evil was present, during * fill in any catastrophic violation of human rights * ?
If the answer is Yes, then this means this Evil is still present today.

And it is your job to recognize it, and take the surprise out of it! 
Whatever happens on a world stage or whatever happens to you personally, you have already won half the battle if you expected it, because you have done your share of the cognitive reasoning.

It’s like when the dark planet Pluto was discovered in the 20th century;
They had known for ages this planet was there because they had suspected it since 1846 and they had calculated it since 1903, when Pluto was called Planet X. 

An active search began, and in 1930 they found it, and called it Pluto.

I want you to be as unsurprised when encountering evil, as astronomers  were discovering Pluto.
You are like an astronomer whom looking at known data, either suspects or knows for a fact, that planet X exists.

You do not have to go looking for it, but study whatever important historic facts you think are relevant here, and trust your conclusions on the subject.
And if you conclude Evil exists, then you should ingrain that knowledge deeply.

And think about what your strategy is, preferably before Evil comes knocking at your door. But definitely before you dip even one toe into the battlefield.

You should not be treading that lightly, thinking it will not be so bad. 
Not unless you believe every oppressed group in history also had their negative thought patterns to blame for their demise.

In my opinion “just” love and acceptance, is not going to cut it.
Which does not mean that you cannot choose that!
Love and acceptance can still be all the armor you will bring, but like Gandhi, it should be a conscious choice.
If you choose to turn the other cheek, because you have thought it through and these are the principles you live by.
But don’t let it be because you underestimate what you’re up against.

Okay.
So Evil in the modern age?
Do we have a concept of what to look for?
Where to look, where it resides/ its lair, and do we know what its weapons are?

I am by no means an expert, but I have a few pointers which might be useful to get you started and create your own perspective.

Evil is the absence of awareness and/ or consent is being bypassed
and/or the blocking of real connection

And another pointer is that evil comes with a resistance to bring this awareness, to bring light (a conscious decision or reflection) into its darkness.
Evil is darkness that comes with protection towards light.

You can recognize this protection by a quickening in the conversation, a skipping of steps, or (most commonly) a discussion or education about a certain topic starting past/after the point where the foundational decision has been made.

Think of it as the toothbrush trick for children, but now for adults.
“Do you want to use the blue toothbrush or the red?”
And us not noticing the decision to brush our teeth has been taken from us.

Whether this is evil depends on the response when being called out. This goes for systems as well as people.
If their response is irritation, pushback, and denial about their attack on our sovereignty;
Then their behavior is evil.

If they accept being called out, and acknowledge you caught them or are genuinely interested in where they missed the mark;
If they apologize and feel remorse, then no harm was intended.
But beware of the speed of this process!
If it’s too quick and they try to brush over the situation, then they are still evil because they are blocking real connection.

Which is the absolute hallmark of evil!

Anyone placing something in between you and them (f.e. a religious conviction, a judgement about you, a problem you need to solve for them, or a political color) is evil, because they are blocking you from knowing them and are forcing you to deal with their shield.
Maybe it is not that “they” are evil, but their behavior is, and you should be weary all the same.

As part of your defensive arsenal in general, I do recommend having a few of those distracting topics handy for your own protection.
Collect a few viewpoints which will repel people, preferably viewpoints that are authentically yours, but I would be liberal here.
And select on effectiveness over authenticity.
Know what to say, to create distance between you and someone violating your space.

Unless you go for the all love and peace option, but I don’t expect that will be too many of us.

Naturally, the areas people are unwilling to discuss also offer opportunities to weaponize their darkness against them.
Again, this is up for your conscious decision making if you want to go that way.

Remember that there is no awareness in evil.
It is not the act but the very absence of awareness that makes it evil, or that gives evil a doorway to come in. If you believe in dark entities then it is generally believed they hook on into the dark spots. That the more dark spots you have in your awareness, the more things you do not want to talk about, brush over, or are ashamed of, the easier it is for dark forces to latch on, which can be detrimental to you but also to those around you.

Evil entities who are not strong enough to reach people around you directly, can then hurt them through you.
This is when you hear words coming out of your mouth, wondering where the hell they came from!

Whether you believe in these unseen forces or not, the general gist of this first pointer (awareness/consent/blocking connection), and in all probability also of the second piece below, which I will write next, is;
Stay strong. Stay present. Stay aware.
Really show up in full connection with whomever you come in touch with.
And be prepared.

Okay second piece.
This, like the first part, is assembled from several singular points I had noted down. Hopefully being able to combine them into one fluent story.

Evil is when fear is brought to the table, when it is unclear who is responsible, when shame is involved

Fear.
Nothing good can come of it.
I know it is very popular to say things like fear being natural, and a protective device, but those opinions are not mine.
And if you can see me going down that road, please push this blogpost 9 November 2024, under my nose! Because I need to read my own words.

So why do I hold fear in such a low regard?
Because first of all you do not think clearly, when you are in fear. So by definition you are incapable of making a rational decision, because your mental capacity has been highjacked by this emotion.
And I will leave it to the experts in neuro psychology to come up with a scientific explanation, but I think I understand the gist of it, and that this claim is correct.
You’re not thinking clearly.
Stop.
Calm down.
And do not do anything until you have mastered your fear.

The second reason you should not do anything when you are in fear, is that your intention, your mindset, your manifestation abilities if you believe in those, are setup wrongly!
Because you’re holding this thing you’re fearful of, and that you’re trying to avoid or move away from, in your mind’s eye when you are making your move in this state. Which will always have detrimental effects.

You must move, decide towards, and act, on what you DO want.
Not panic out of fear.

But the third reason, and most relevant to the topic at hand, is that fear makes you manipulatable. 
All anyone, including evil, needs to do is to touch on your fear, and you’ll vote/buy/do anything to prevent your worst fears from coming true.

The person who is selling you something or informing you on something should never be the same person as the one telling you fearful things.
Because
a. they have a direct interest in you being fearful, because then you buy.
Ask yourself, if this person had not first touched on my fear, would I have bought?
And
b. because fear has cut back your brain power to make a well-informed decision.
So the person who informed you, should never be the one benefiting from your (hopefully temporary) weak position here.
If you want, come back when you’ve done your research and compared other opinions and options.

So someone who FIRST triggers your fear, or even creates an entirely new fear, only to then offer the solution, is evil.

Then the second thing I mentioned;
Fear is when no one is responsible.
Get your red flags out!

This can be a war type of situation where whole areas go without proper rule and the right of the strongest prevails.
But it’s usually a lot more subtle than that.
It is every promise, deal or rejection, that is not made in written form;
It is every situation without someone in charge.
It is everything that is implied but not said out loud.

Is it always evil?
Fortunately no.
If you ask:
“Who’s in charge?”
“What do you mean?”
or
“Will I receive that in writing?”
And someone cooperates, then it has stopped being evil. Whether from having been called out or because it was always all very openly discussed, does not really matter.

But making people take responsibility for what they say, want and need, should definitely become second nature to you.
Don’t give the devil free rides.

And then, finally, to close this blogpost with;
Things are evil when shame is involved.

Intimately connected to the concept of Fear, but definitely the better paralyzer of the two, we have the concept of Shame.
The reason it’s related is because Shame is fear of social exclusion.
The reason Shame is even more effective than Fear, in destabilizing and manipulating people and selling them absolutely on everything you want them to believe, buy or do, is because that fear of social exclusion, is our primal fear.

It’s even a bigger fear than our own physical death, because we know we will all die some day anyway, and the best thing we can hope for is to die surrounded by loved ones.
Exactly what social exclusion prevents.

Shame is fear of dying alone, weaponized.
If someone or something makes you feel ashamed about yourself that thing has got its fangs and claws into you so deeply, you will need Lion Courage to release yourself!
But do it!

I am handing you Lion Courage, Rock Star Courage RIGHT NOW!
YOU CAN DO IT!

Sit with it, let it wash over you, every situation where you feel, as they say that nowadays “cringe”.
Whether it is Shame or its little brother Cringe, take that Lion Courage and bring all of your awareness to it.
Because those are not just doorways where evil can come in, it’s more like the whole backwall of the castle missing.

And now, we are at the end of the blogpost.

It has become so much longer than I intended, and also far more serious.
And still I know I will go about the rest of my day thinking “Oh I forgot this one.” or “I should have said that”
Which brings me to the final characteristic of Evil.

It is the illusion of undoing.

Evil, is Live spelled backwards. It is the undoing of creation, it is destruction in all its aspects including undoing your own writing.
Or altering it.

If we want to become messengers of the light, we must allow the light to work through us. Our human ego must step back and we must let God, or Good, take the wheel.
Just like Evil uses our blindspots to enter, God, or Good, uses where our awareness is.

The best way to fight evil is to amp up on your awareness to its maximum potential, and to stay away from everything that lowers your consciousness. 
Let awareness become your coin, your wealth, your riches.

Your awareness is your light which is not just your protection from evil, but the way you can bring good into this world.

I know it’s not exactly a reputable source, but I think a meme I encountered last week sums it up!

You do not arrive in the New World.
The New World, arrives through you.

perfect your love

When you have thought it all through and counted the hours you were about to spend on saving yourself, improving the situation, responding to an unforeseen event to make it all right.

Versus the limited days you will have on this earth.

Very little remains, that still needs doing.

A few months ago, and inspired by the movie The Crow (1994) and studying its meaning and symbolism for weeks, I changed the graphic design of my Canva posts for this series.

Instead of using a photo referring to the subject I was talking about, preferably illustrated with Rock Star references such people with tattoos, artists, musicians or music adjacent visuals such as a studio or a stage;
I did a 180, and switched to Goth inspired.

Initially I used them in the same manner I had done with the Rock Star photos:
To search for a certain topic in the Canva photo database and insert it into my design.
But soon enough my routines started changing.

The change was sparked when I started to use filters, to give the photos a more Gothic look.
And I do not remember the order in which this happened but soon enough it became a layered process, blowing a photo up, using only certain parts, or selecting other photos to fill up the margins with a background image.
And the gamechanger was finding the Remove Background option.

I completely reinvented it and for today’s Canva I used a total of four Canva photos, all filter adjusted and all with their backgrounds removed.
Resulting in a Halloween appropriate image of a witch doing her magic surrounded by graves and a Crow.
Which ignited this shift, months ago.

The Crow (1994) would not have reached its legendary status without the enigmatic Brandon Lee turning this into masterpiece.
It was his unwavering love for the project, where his dedication inspired the whole crew to bring their best game, why we are still talking about this movie today.

The story itself however, did come with a core element that only had to be preserved, polished and highlighted. Not created.
Love.

The story of The Crow (1994) is the story of undying love.
A love that crosses over into the afterlife, and that has the power to bring back the dead.

And it is a good movie to watch in times of turmoil. Because it makes clear that we cannot influence the evil that goes on in the world.
That evil, in many cases, is too strong a force.

As was the case for Eric and Shelly, the young and very Rock Star couple from The Crow, who got murdered for what was basically a fight over real estate at the highest level in which they had no part except being tenants at a coveted location.
It appears to be a Victorian church, once converted into an apartment building. Eric and Shelly rent the corner top floor apartment, right under the roof. 

They are murdered on the night before Halloween

“which was called “Devil’s Night” or “Hell Night” from the 1970’s through the 90’s, due to the numerous acts of vandalism and violence across the U.S., particularly in the city of Detroit.”

The financial backstory to their murder is shown, not told. We see the murderous gang entering their apartment referring to the complaint the couple made, in a team-up with other tenants in the neglected building.
They stood up for their own rights, and the rights of others.
And paid for it with their lives.

And yet, what they actually stood up for, side by side with the other people in their building, was nothing short of love in its purest form.

Throughout the movie we see flashbacks to the couple in love, Shelly’s wedding magazines, and a little girl Sarah who regularly visits them, finding surrogate parents in them.
The love of the couple has permeated everything around them.

And just like them, we may not have the power to change things. Nor to assess correctly all the evil powers at play.
But we do have the power to do the right thing, and to love the ones around us unconditionally.

Brandon Lee died making The Crow, he was hit on set in a firearm accident. Just like his father Bruce Lee, Brandon died young and under unlikely circumstances that had no clear cause and effect.

And just like the character Eric in the movie The Crow, Brandon had also found the love of his life, and died just before he could marry her.
The wedding had been scheduled a week after filming of The Crow would end.

But again, just like Eric and Shelly in the movie, Brandon Lee had given it his all. His relationship, as well as this movie.
Which he brought to great heights, always striving the best for every scene and for the character.

The intense love Brandon Lee had for his life and his work, is what has survived to this day.

Buildings burn, people die;
But real love is forever.

And let it be a private matter.

Select your divine objects, build the myths, map out the regiment for this sanctuary.
What are its daily practices of wholeness and holiness?

What are the rules upon entering, and how are they enforced?

There is a housing crisis in The Netherlands. Like most crises it was off course manmade. Had they continued to build at the rate it was done up until 1990, and (this is where it gets hypothetical) resisted the temptation to sell real estate from public housing associations;
None of this would have happened.

Supposedly, the rise of the number of households was predicted wrongly.
But since predicting it correctly would have involved the government spending more money, instead of saving it like a wrong prediction would, I doubt it was a case of getting the numbers wrong.
And I recently read they were instantly, and in no uncertain terms, warned against the dire consequences of cutting back on building new houses, in the early 90s.
But I cannot find that link so I will just leave it at it being my own not-fact checked belief.

But it is my own not-fact checked belief our current housing shortage is a direct long term consequence of short-term thinking, and more importantly short-term cashing, dating as far back as the early 90s, and continuing to this day.

However, regardless of whose fault it is, it is a fact that a lot of people are living together who do not want to.
Couples who want to get divorced, cannot even get separated.
Students still living with their parents instead of with other students, like was the custom up until the 90s.
Young professionals still living with their parents, and young couples not being able to start their lives together.

Not to mention families who are in need of bigger homes, in order to create privacy and a livable situation where the children have a quiet room for their homework.

And so on, and so forth.

I just saw a movie about the 1930’s, which were the crisis years here, as they were in many parts of the world.
I think the word is individuation; The ability to become your own person.
You need space for that.

In a society with great shortages, people will have a hard time negotiating even the most basic boundaries, let alone feel they have space to grow.
Or, as the title suggest, to build their own church. Even if I just intended that in a metaphorical sense.

And even if we do end up on the right side of the housing shortage, or whatever crisis our country is battling, even then;
Are you actually and actively executing and enforcing who you TRULY are?!
Are you the embodiment of your TRUE values?!

And if, coming back to the title of this blogpost, you are the embodiment of somebody else’s church, somebody else’s values?
I have good news for you;
This works too.
There is no necessity to make up your own church or your own scriptures.

But the problem is, most of us have NONE!
No rulebook or concept about what our set of guiding principles actually are.
And even when we do, wouldn’t you agree we still spend way too much time taking in other people’s opinion and considering angles to problems that are for sure, not authentically ours?

We still waste time and spread ourselves thin, because we have not conceptualized it to a point where an official religion would have effortlessly guided us through.
We’re coasting, flaking, failing and at best Forest Gumping our way forward,  where religion would have us aim HIGHER.
And have given us grid.

You know I’m telling the truth here.

So we know this is not about you and me joining some church, although that is totally fine too.
But this is about taking our own life seriously.

This is about an understanding that any scripture, playbook, set of values, or any daily practice and returning ritual;
That those are when we focus our attention, create intention, infuse awareness, and that will bring it ALL to life.

The understanding that if we would be as committed as religious people;
We’d be crushing it.

So go and crush it.

Build the church that was yours to build, to live the Life that was yours to live.

Amen.

the path precedes the purpose

The unfolding, the divinations, the visioning and the connection to a Higher Being, should not be creations of the mind.

But rather a joined-at-the-hip quest.

Where the best prediction of your destination is based on the lessons you are learning along the way.

There is a scene in The Wedding Singer (1998), where a groom who has been left at the altar by his bride-to-be, is sitting on a porch as she tries to explain to him why she sees no future for the two of them.
Until he answers:
“Once again, things that could have been brought to my attention YESTERDAY!!”

Screaming the last words out in frustration.

That’s me, doing self-reflection.

As I get older, my appreciation for everyone who manages to go through life either just setting one foot in front of the other, or who can settle on one philosophy (such as “There is only love”) or a religion of sorts;
Has been on the rise.

Everyone who shows up at the altar without making a scene, and in appreciation of all the wonder, and with a happy heart?
Oh, wouldn’t it be nice…. 

Understanding Life in a cognitive way, the way I do, certainly has its merits.
But the tremendous mistakes I have made along the way are of a magnitude reserved for people who reflect with an intensity that this whole life simply isn’t intended for.

From the looks of it, I think it would be much more pleasant to simply always show up at the proverbial altar and enjoying the ride.

But for some of us, and that definitely includes me, a special place in hell is created right here on earth, where we look back and trace our steps until the truth is standing right in front of us in white dress, making us feel unlovable because of all the mistakes we made years ago.
Things that could have been brought to our attention in 1998, so to speak.

And it’s not that we disagree with her, we can see she has a point.
But what’s the purpose of knowing that years ago (or decades, if you have the privilege being old enough), you took a wrong turn?

Those are the moments we wish the hardest we had been one of those Living In The Moment Type of People.
At least we would have enjoyed the road we travelled!

Maybe roads already travelled are not meant to be analyzed any more than needing to know someone who already left us at the altar thinks we were unworthy of their love.

Or, plot twist, alternative ending, director’s cut;
What if nothing went wrong?
What if this was the way the movie was set up all along?

What if our bad decisions are actually the 100% correct ones, giving us exactly what we needed to move the story forward?

We too, can walk in Faith.

Not faith that we will be able to face adversity and that we will make something out of our lives because we are surrounded by friends and loved ones.
Because we are the ones sitting on that porch, alone, with the exception of the odd one stopping by to tell us how disappointed they are in us.

But we have something else.

We can trust that the road we chose, as well as the lessons it has taught us, are what is required for where we are going.

Our purpose is an unfolding one.
Our practice one of faith, trusting not so much in a happy ending, but that whatever it was we learned;
It will one day be needed.

It will be what we give out.

The Spool writes at the 25th anniversary of The Wedding Singer, about Robbie  (Adam Sandler) overcoming heartbreak and finding the love of his life (Drew Berrymore):

“Robbie and Julia don’t end up together because the script demands it,
but because they were truly meant to be,
and the fact that the viewer truly believes that is a kind of rare magic.” 

If Robbie’s first fiancee had not left him so brutally, the fairy tale romance with Drew Berrymore would not have happened.
Yet it is the very fact that she did leave him, which was the most accurate prediction for what was in store for Robbie.

The One you’re really supposed to be with, or alternatively, The One you’re really supposed to BE?
It was never missed because of past mistakes which have left you at the altar and to have painful conversations at the porch.

Instead, it will be brought into your life because of it.
It was a sign, of what is still to come.

power is responsibility

Great power comes with great responsibility. Yes.

But also the far more often applicable, yet easier forgotten wisdom as well;

Accept great responsibility, and great power will be yours.

I like establishing foundational principles for myself.
Things I have thought about so deeply that I know I have dissected them down to their core principle, so that regardless of what happens at the more visible levels, I never have to change course. 

Because I know the guiding principle, my North Star, my direction no longer sways.

The idea of taking responsibility as a way of manipulating reality, is one of them. A heavily underused one, although I believe that after writing this blog I’ll move this one a little bit more to the front, instead of keeping it dormant at the back of my head.

Power comes from taking responsibility;
What do I mean when I say that?

And at the risk of scaring you away, or perhaps that is my intention because if this scares you I don’t think the rest will interest you much either, but either way at the risk of whatever your response might be, I’ll tell you my most vivid memory, of taking responsibility and feeling power flow back into me.
A sensation as powerful as Highlander having the life force of his opponent flowing into him, after he kills another immortal.
That’s what happened to me, when I first consciously applied this principle, although it was definitely not my intention to break open a whole new path to, I don’t know, world domination?!

Little disclaimer here – before we proceed – ALL actions that symbolize taking responsibility, are actually irrelevant.
You cannot take or get power, simply by saying you are responsible or having someone else appoint you in any way.
It is the energy behind it, a felt urgency, a knowing that you’re gonna do this and that nothing will stand in your way.

So in the following example that may or may not upset you, it is not that I endorse taking the same action as I did.
It is an illustration that if you take responsibility and believe with your whole might that this is yours to claim, and that you’re gonna run with it and no one will ever take this from you;
Then, you will feel as Highlander-empowered as I did.

This origin story of my first power grab, that stays with me to this day, comes from the time I unsubscribed myself from the government funded health screening program I had been eligible for.
Had been eligible for a while already, and had even gone a couple of times, not thinking much about it.
Yet it wasn’t after I started witnessing the consequences of such screenings, and I’m not going to elaborate on that because that would be beside the point, that I realized I wanted out.

That I was not going to let such a system influence my life.
So what, if I had a beginning cancer.
Very consciously and deliberately, I chose the risk of an early death over the horror of letting other people tell me what diseases I might have.
I was no longer going to take pamphlets from medical doomsayers claiming to wanting to save my body, any more than I would take advice from religious people wanting to save my soul.

I’ll go to hell then, thank you and fuck off. 

I’m giving the management summary here, the whole thought process from my first doubts to deciding and taking action, took multiple years.
But by the time I had made up my mind, the whole idea of health screenings had become synonymous with Evil Incarnate.
So to say I was ready to unsubscribe, was an understatement.
I would have taken its head off, if that had been an option.

Thankfully for everybody, no killing was required and it was all politely organized through a website where you could indicate you no longer wanted to be invited.
It asked if I just wanted to cancel this screening, or all future ones as well.
And if I canceled everything, well then how about a tiny reminder in five years or so, just in case I had changed my mind? 
They asked me if I was sure that they could go fuck themselves.
And then if I was really really really sure.

And with every No, and every cancellation, and every Fuck You Miserable Scumbags that I could not type in, but that I FELT in my bones!

I felt power flowing back.

And I regained;
EVERYTHING.
It was amazing…. I never felt anything like it.

Life, was given back to me.
All the power, taken by patriarchy, I could feel it flowing back, and probably straight into that part they had been after!
Well I guess my Highlander comparison fell a bit short there, but you catch my drift.

I was born anew.
Like an initiation where I had faced death. Now, I could no longer be manipulated by the living.

For days I was completely drunk with power.

And there was a realization that I had had an awakening. That something spiritual had happened.
Yet, with the same certainty, I also knew that I could tell no one. It would be irresponsible. Everyone would think I would be advising people not to go to screening, when I knew there was a hell of a lot more to it than that.
I had been living up to that final “battle” for years;
Had I filled in the website form at the first whim, no relief would have been felt. Let alone a response as powerful as mine had been.

But now, a decade or so later, I can share because I know what was the key ingredient here.
What happened those years prior, that made the shift so profound.

And that all this, is NOT about me bad mouthing health screening!

The key ingredient, is about responsibility.

I took responsibility over my own health and life, kicking out anyone who was there with government authority to test my organs for cancer.

However!
Someone else might take the same responsibility over their health and decide the exact opposite!
In that case, they will probably take the government screenings on board and perhaps pay for a few extra ones themselves as well.

See?
Told you this blog was not just me roasting health screenings, although yeah, it does bring back warm and fuzzy memories of my Highlander moment, swearing so much.

But the point is this;
This was JUST an example!
Imagine taking any annoying, frustrating area of your life where you’ve basically  been half-assing it for years, if not decades;
And turning it into a Highlander-esque explosion of power!

It can be done.

It really is the being on the fence itself;
The not making a decision;
The not being in, but the also not severing ties.
It is the being too scatterbrained or cowardice to give it a firm No or a Hell Yes!
That, is the problem in itself.

Not the subject or topic, or the area of life.
And to a large extend it’s not the problem or the irritation in itself either. But you not feeling ownership, that is where your power leaks away.
Or letting other people decide because they know better, and you losing agency because of it.

Try this, any area where you have goals or are hoping for improvement;
“I am responsible for (-)”
And now finish this sentence, filling in the area where you have been coasting, waiting and feeling icky and annoyed every time you think about it.

“I am responsible for (-) and therefor I take the following actions: (-)”

Whether it’s about taking positive action immediately, or whether just like me you first need to clean house;
It doesn’t matter.

But pull all that responsibility towards you!
Be decisive, be thorough, and in a way;
Be merciless.

For you know what they say;

In the end, there can be only One.

It’s why an author’s debut novel has the most urgency.
And why a band’s first album makes the deepest cut.

Pursue the topics that set your soul on fire, and your best work will come.
Without even trying.

At least once a week I used to lose myself in unbridled fantasies about how orderly and powerful my life would look, if I was a normal person who calmly ran and built her service company where all would find peace and solace in yoga, mentoring, and read articles that lifted the heaviness of their burdened souls.

All the while knowing perfectly well that I am ruled by my creativity.
And that merely the act of fantasizing that way, is already a testament to how deep the rabbit hole goes.
When topics most people are drawn to or emotionally invested in, get visited by me:
Never.

All popular Dutch television shows from the past ten years or so?
Watched zero episodes.
Because if you have your own television set in your head, things just work differently.

The thing doesn’t have an Off button though.
Which is why The Inner-World tv series is playing pretty much all day and, if all goes well, automatically switches to one of the After Dark Channels, at night.
Shifting to a mellower mood, more suitable for the time of day and ending active thinking mode.

Although my ability to really dive into a topic did not become apparent until the topic became yoga, earlier adaptations of my desire to study things I am interested in would be Brad Pitt, Bon Jovi, or the person I was in love with at the time.
I also did a lot of work studying Madonna, in particular (as far as we’re talking about the first expressions of my artistic roots) from 1990 to 1994, what I would call her Erotica Era.
After her True Blue/ Like a Prayer albums, which I didn’t even own, I could feel her work was changing in 1990, and becoming more aligned for me.

My interests dominating my thinking, has been a lifelong fact.

However the walls of where we are called out to take responsibility for how we spend our time, and to work towards our goals or at the very least to do  something productive, useful, and in service of someone or something;
Well, sooner or later those walls will have closed in.

At some point, on a cognitive level, you will have started believing your creativity is a self-care activity with which you can reward yourself after you have fulfilled your worldly duties.

Only to see yourself sacrificing sleep, relationships, being on time, exercising, daylight, meals, and keeping the house clean or at least above the level of a stable;
In order to attend to your creative flow.

My personal boundary was that I never sacrificed personal hygiene, but the rest went overboard in a heartbeat.
All, to follow creative flow.

So if that’s you, I hear you. I know this is madness, and that you (like me) are probably wishing that you still had that luxury of being able to cut watching tv, to get more creative time.
Instead of cutting the parts that would have been so nice to have in your life.

And also the moment that you start doing your version of fantasizing about how beautifully organized and contained your life would look, if you did not have this Passion ravaging anything that looks like control, intention and just general Life Together-ness.

I got you, and I understand.

But you know as well as I do that your creativity is the real thing. And that wishing for a less chaotic life would mean cutting yourself off from everything that inspires you. Meaning from everything you love.

Even though I loved fantasizing about my creativity to go, deep down I knew that to wish for creativity to go, means closing your heart and no longer being able to be in meaningful relationships.
Not with my work, and not with other people.

Ultimately?
All those moments fantasizing about how life would look without creativity, or maybe it were all the hours thinking about marketing and business, who is to say;
But ultimately, it paid off.
Big time.

And maybe this is what will help you too in staying true to what your creative heart wants, while also having the satisfaction of being productive.

I will be speaking about this in the upcoming years as well, but today is the first time I mention it.
Because it’s really fresh!
But what I am about to tell you has silenced the ongoing battle in my head.
I no longer fantasize about how clean my life would look without creativity.

If you are a creative who loses hours in their creative work, but also wants to be in their business.
Someone who understands that in 2024 and probably for the rest of our lives, being an artist is about being visible as much as it is about creating the art?
And that our real job is to sell it? Not to create it, since that, give or take,  goes automatically.

I have found the way to silence the voices of doubt, and to let your art work for you. Not against you.

I call it Portfolio Marketing, and I will speak about it frequently.
This is how it works;

You let your marketing, your daily messaging -> BE <- your creative work.

So for some of you, the creative work already is the marketing.
Like Andy Warhol used to be an illustrator of fashion, early on in his career.  These drawings are now art of course, just like all his other art that was  immediately created as such.
If, in 2024, making reels is your actual creative expression, then that is your marketing.
Every reel is then not just content, but providing you save or post them where they are preserved, they also build your portfolio.
Naturally, you can also be an artist who includes temporality in their art. Then the art having vanished after 24 hours becomes part of the art, and although the piece itself is not preserved and not added to a physical portfolio, the art has existed.
The immaterial art portfolio is still being built, but more in the way like performance art.

So you stick with your own dominant creative expression, and that is your marketing.

Contrary to how normal businesses do marketing, where what they post is tailored to building the audience, and therefor repurposing and even buying other people’s content (365 Days of Content bundles etc.) in order to get the job done;
What I call Portfolio Marketing means what you create to post should be Art in itself, or it should be related to things that were already in your portfolio.
For example a quote from one of your books, with a sales link to the book.

Now this is not rigid of course.
There can still be services you sell, or areas that you speak on, where you create a different sort of content that is not part of your dominant creative expression.
For example a written post on YouTube, when your dominant expression is being a videographer.
These written posts will never be collected and studied, and mused over what you meant, and so on.
But your videos could end up in a museum in 2060.

In this case the videos are the core part of Portfolio Marketing, and the post is not.

Working from the concept of Portfolio Marketing, gives direction to your creative inspiration (and you can engage guilt free)
And at the same time makes sure you do not spent your creative hours on marketing that ultimately does not have your heart in it.

Naturally creativity can also express in the service or product you are offering. 
This is definitely a more daredevil thing to do, and the stakes are a lot higher -leading your creative vein into art that can serve “just” as marketing is definitely less risky-
but it can be done.

What you then get, is that you are allowing the actual thing you are selling to change.
And the only thing constant?
Is you.

This is by far the most Rock Star thing anyone can do.
And I invite you to get comfortable with that idea as well.
To give it time to grow on you, that in the end, one day, you’re ONLY going to create whatever it is you want to create.
And sell it.

Then the whole marketing layer has dropped and it becomes to be building your Portfolio.

And this can be art (as in a painting f.e.) but it can also be a service.
Selling a new course every few weeks.

When your audience has grown accustomed to knowing you as a creator, a gate to another level has opened, where they are starting to come for you.
No longer your work.
This is what I call the Rock Star level, no longer Artist level.

It’s not a hierarchy, both models come with their advantages and disadvantages.

A business sells a generic service or product;
An Artist or a company with an “Art based” strategy, sells a unique service or product, brand or system;
But a Rock Star sells whatever they want.

This is the level where you have truly outgrown your business owner- service provider-jacket, and are now completely free to cross over to any other industry, at will.
You can do and sell whatever you please, as long as it is consistent with the values you stand for.

It is an interesting exercise to feel if that brings up any resistance and if you can bypass that.

Can you give yourself permission to let the art come out, in whatever way it wants?
And accept that you should perhaps resist calling yourself a * fill in any craft * because there is no way of telling what your medium will be in the future?

Can you let the art be the art?

And accept the possibility that the art was something else all along.

Because all three points are just a suggestion, they offer a good framework providing one hour for every topic, to go deeper looking for answers.
But the setlist is not fixed.

I have merely built the stage for us, and we have three hours.

It is up for you to take it.

The talents, skills and interests that are currently activated in you, are both a gift, because here the energy will flow;
As well as a limitation.

And to up the ante;
They are ever changing.

I think it was about ten, fifteen years ago, when this idea that we (artists and business owners) needed a Why, was very much en vogue.
Which was actually a trickled down version from the idea that companies in general, needed a Why.
Which is how a lot of things in marketing and management got screwed up.
And this was no exception.

Because when you are an independent the only one that is involved in moving your business forward, is you.
And you don’t need to write down on paper what excites you, what moves you, why you love your work, and not even (anyone who has been within 5 yards of a marketing course will recognize this), not even, who your ideal clients are.

You will know what people you gel with, and whom you don’t get along with.
There is little mystery there, except perhaps that you need to give yourself permission to only do business or work with people and under the conditions that suit you.
Permission granted.

However, for a company, where people need to work together within a bee hive or abstract concept, of course it can help to give words to how client relationships should be managed.
You need to give the company a personality, shoes into which employees can step and a vocabulary they can use.
A philosophy to work by.

However, if you are your own person, then all those things do not need to be explicit, because they are yours.
You, are the company.
If you would set up your own philosophy as if you are a company, it would end up being as artificial as for any other employee.

Working under other people’s rules is always straining, even if it was originally your own.
It’s like when you have those business owners/CEOs who work really hard and then expect the same from their personnel.
When the entire company has been tailored to their strengths.
The people around them are working in a to-them-foreign energy, so it’s much harder on them.

The same would happen if you would set your own work philosophy or artistic direction in stone.
You’re immediately stuck in yesterday’s version of you.
Bye bye growth and agility.

So clearly, that’s not an option.

The whole idea of knowing and finding your Why, and it being this Thing that drives everything, might be an improvement for companies, and definitely beats trying to regulate everything at execution level.
But it’s a setback for if you are your own person.

You are becoming less, not more, if you put your Why on paper and stick to it.
You’ve thrown away your natural inspiration and alignment, for something man-made.

We have to except that we do not have a Why.
And that that is a good thing.
At the risk of being too extreme for your liking, I would offer you’re actually under direct command of the Universe or your higher Self.

Now of course this does not mean that your work is in isolation! Of course you’re looking for connection with those around you, including your clients or audience.
But what I mean is that you’re not doing it from a point of having your philosophy or mission laminated on your desk.

Dealing with your own ever changing nature, or the ever changing direction that the Universe or other powers give you, can be a bit of a challenge.

There is the story about the scorpion who wants the frog to take him across the river. The frog refuses, saying that the scorpion will sting him.
But the scorpion says, why would I do that?
Because if I do, then we’re both dead.

So the frog takes the scorpion on its back.

Of course the scorpion stings the frog, and before drowning the frog asks why.
“It’s my nature,” the scorpion replies.

In the most extreme sense, you are one day a scorpion, the next day the frog, and the following day a fish who cannot be made to climb a tree.

This is of course a very extreme example, and one I hope you do not have to live through.

It all boils down to two aspects, to this process of doing what comes naturally and what will therefor take flight, and come effortlessly.

The first is to realize you do not need to fixate yourself.

The corporate inspired vision, blueprint, whatever, is not for you. And you do not even have to commit to a set of values unless you doubt your own ability to do the right thing, given the context.
Contrary to businesses, you are flexible because you walk your own path. And staying on path, does not mean to verbalize it and name every corner and formalize every decision;
It means being true to who you are.

And secondly, your natural strengths are forever changing.
Because you, are forever changing.

Who you are, in the most extreme sense, can fluctuate from being the scorpion, to the frog, to the fish, to the tree.
And you could say that the work flows from that.

But another way to see it, is that you change because the work that is supposed to flow out of you, is different every day.
This means to trust you are exactly who you are meant to be that day, in order to do what needs to be done.

That you are not given the satisfaction of being able to articulate what your mission or your philosophy is.
Not the luxury and the peace of mind, of having a clearly aligned Why.

But you got something else;
The understanding that you will wake up every day, being exactly the right person for the work that needs to be done.

Including dealing out the occasional sting.

In areas that are not part of your natural creative expression, we can fall prey to intellectually designing them.

But in those other areas, what you skillfully did, was to create the space for it to happen.
To arrive, to unfold.

Get yourself and your affairs in order to receive.

There was a bit of a crisis at Casa Catacombe, the past week or so.

If I had written this post from scratch today, instead of scrolling back to 2023’s Instagram for the text;
Retrieving the design from my old Canva;
And adjusting it to the formats I currently use – with the original photo missing from the Canva database, and not being able to choose the layout I wanted;

Then this post would not, have been about receiving.

It would be more hustle grind and definitely less flowy.

But I can see now that Receiving is (of course) exactly the right topic for today. My crisis was indeed about having resistance to creating space to receive.

The way I see it, excavating this text 15 months later, is that your work (as in what costs effort) is not what other people think your work is.
It’s not your craft, not your profession, not your talent or your gift.

“your natural creative expression” as the text calls is, in indeed the absolute least of our worries!

I remember there is this “thing” among professionals, that you have to invest in “sharpening the saw”.
That you have to invest in staying skilled at what it is you do.

Where in my opinion if you are called and have a purpose, that saw will be sharpening itself hour after hour after day after week after year.
Not a moment will go by when you are not nurturing it, everything you experience will directly feed into it.

If you have our type of saw, it does not need sharpening.

However, the problem we, people with self-sharpening saws, have is that everything else does not get done.
What the post calls:
“areas that are not part of your natural creative expression”

Definitely true!
In 2024 just like 2023.
Remember, the reason you have that Super Saw, is indeed because you have created space in your life so that Saw can sharpen itself day and night.
And regularly go on a much desired spin.

You’re not going to keep that creative saw you’re carrying there, in your shed!
Oh no.
You’re wielding it, it doesn’t have secrets for you.

However, what 2023’s post did not mention, and what 10 days of crisis at the Catacombe Casa can tell you, is that if you have this auto-sharpening, running saw, that you love to ride like others drive their motorcycle?
The *checks notes*, “areas that are not part of your natural creative expression”, will have a hard time getting a place in your life!

So yes, realize “all” you need to do , to receive in those areas, is indeed to create space for them.
True that.
But it does mean you have to carve out time, and a safe space for these blessings to land, with a free-spinning creative saw on the loose.

And that?
Can require some thought 😉

And for the unlucky ones, a crisis or two.

ABOUT THE LOST POST SERIES

I have been consistently posting “What Do Rock Stars Need To Hear Today” for a while now.
Starting June 2023, they found their final form as blogposts here on the Catacombe blog, pretty quickly.

But I’ve always been aware there were singular posts/ borderline poetry, still on social media, floating somewhere down my timeline.

Some at the beginning when I did not know what this series would be.
Some around the time in October/November 2023, when I lost access to this site.
And then a few in between.

And additionally to that, there are the ones I did post on the blog, but whose stories revolve around things I no longer offer.
I will retrieve those too;
And give them a new story, that has the timeless quality they deserve.
