Be grateful for how you get to share and sell your work.

But do not attach, because all platforms and even your own skillset are ultimately subject to change.

Where your message is eternal.

It used to be one of the things I learned studying business, that I thought was so useful, insightful, and something every business owner should know!
That any business is only as good as their systems.

Systems for example for offering online courses, for taking orders, packaging, processing payments, registrations and so on, are the real value, of our business.

If your systems work great, you can even sell your business.
And to the highest bidder of which there will be many!
Or setup a franchise system, which comes down to leasing out your set of systems.

And not just in-house tech.
Platforms too, which you use to get your content out or the money in, are part of your systems.
This is the infamous:
“Don’t build your house on somebody else’s ground.” – wisdom.

A warning, that if you build a business relying on a platform, it could all be taken away from you.

Something I am experiencing because I have been unable to access this website catacombenijmegen.com.

Only in this case, I had paid for use of the ground, but the payment went wrong triggering the landowner’s accountant and they kicked me off.

Thankfully, access has been restored, but a residual hiccup persists, and the url currently still has “wordpress” in there.
The main url is not in place yet.

But what I learned was what is wrong with the idea that a business = systems.

There is another way.

Which is to rely on YOU;
Not on your systems.

For a regular business owner, or an accountant, or someone who loves building systems?
Yes.
Your business SHOULD be to build systems.

But a Rock Star was born in freedom, and what they sell is the promise of that.

The medium they use, is simply the one they have access to today.

The things that appeared when we were just having fun.
The skills we now possess after simply doing what we love.
The people in our lives, after following our heart.

Have you ever wondered how impossible it would have been to have planned for those things?

There is a tendency to focus on what we need to create, build, master;
Compose, conceive, and receive;
Instead of honoring, considering and going with, what came into being without us even trying.

But just like the saying goes, that if you let something go and it comes back it is yours to keep?
The same can be said for all those things you never asked for;
They’re yours to keep. Really, to keep.

Where manmade reality, of any kind, is fickle, needs constant adjusting, readjusting, aligning and even redesigning?
This does not apply to what I will call “God’s gifts”.

The things, people, circumstances, Life, that comes to us, not from us.

From what I remember, the most important tool to live a happier life, is a gratitude journal, which is a notebook where you write down what you’re grateful for.
Every day.
And I’ll be the first to admit I don’t have one, although I tried many times. The first time in 1998 already.

My problem was that what started as a gratitude journal would soon become a log, a reflection of everything that happened.
It wouldn’t be long until my desire to keep a complete record of my days took over and the savoring of the good moments dropped to the background.
There was too much trying (trying to build the boat), and not much appreciating of the boats that were there all by themselves.

Whether you start a gratitude journal, or not;
Look for the boats you did not build, but that are happily floating throughout your life.

Be in wonder of everything you did not create.

it is never the thing you need to think about

What is yours to create, flows out of you like a river to the ocean or comes crashing down, with waterfall-like urgency.
It are the things you keep thinking about like a lover you do not allow yourself to have.

Yes, of course, in theory?
You can wall all that off!

Hooray!
Now tell me, where did Life go?

I had what I would call a Journaling Incident, and it was about as disturbing as when something goes wrong with sex.
Even when all it was, was just the two of you pushing things, hungry for each other and for a bigger thrill;
It will still have consequences.

There needs to be a going back to square one, after an incident.
An acknowledgement from both sides:
“Okay, this happened, but we’re still here for each other.”

I have not journaled since, but I did spend some time thinking about it and “we’re good now”, me and my journaling practice.
I actually found it intriguing that there had been more at stake, than I used to think there was.
But apparently, just like with sex: Journaling has an element of danger.
The hallmark of any emotionally charged expressions of Self.

Just like your art.
You can’t control the outcome, anymore than sex or journaling, and you may miss the mark sometimes. If you didn’t, it wouldn’t be art.

So now back to the title at hand:
“it is never the thing you need to think about”

Just like with sex, or committing to a relationship, anyone you need to think about and talk yourself into liking, or start putting conditions around? 
Ah, ah!
Not the person you want to be with, clearly.
We’re looking for rivers, waterfalls and avalanches.
Not dripping taps.

Years ago, I identified a rarely talked about factor, in harmful sexual encounters;
It is if we want all parties to understand what a No is?
We need to start respecting the Yes!

As long as we do not honor that two people having a deep sexual desire for each other, is something beautiful, and to be celebrated;
We will keep having trouble with No’s being interpreted, or someone getting away with interpreting it as, a Yes.

In other words:
Is your creativity, your art, the thing you were put here for on this earth, is it a safe bet with a certain outcome?
No.
Could you end up making a mistake and hurting people?
Yes.

But regardless, Rock Star, what else are you gonna do?

You can spend your life working on projects with a certain outcome, and limit yourself to planning instead of allowing free flow journaling like I did.
Just like you can choose to spend it in a good-enough relationship, that constantly needs adjusting because the two of you lack, or no longer have, the natural alignment of values, of dreams, of communication styles, of whatever.

Or, alternatively:
You can start saying Hell Yes!!!

To the projects, the ideas, the people, and the creative endeavors that are already banging at your door every morning.
And you could let them in, in your bathrobe, and you two would have such a good time, creatively or otherwise.

They’re already galloping through your mind, and you could take them out for a spin at lunch.

They’re already waiting for you, when you get home at night, and you could just make a sandwich and get to work together.

They’re already there with you in your dreams, every night, all night.

Stop putting mind and effort in the maybes, the perhaps, the ifs, the on-the-conditions-thats.

When there is an infinite whole world of Hell Yesses waiting for you!

Your mission, your work, your history and your purpose;
They have built your strength, they have robbed you of your peace of mind and they have galvanized you into the person you are today.

Your destiny has carved itself into your bones and burned itself into your flesh.

There is no, nor will there ever be,
rest for the wicked.

Look at the very fabric of your day, at the moving parts and pieces of your life. The ones that seem to effortlessly flow out of you, and for which there is always time regardless of how busy your life is.
The ones that come like breathing.

Look honestly at the recurring thoughts and the inconvenient, maddening, knowing of Truth, you carry with you.
You know which one I’m talking about.
The one that doesn’t budge regardless of how hard you try to rationalize yourself out of it.

These things reveal the code with which you came, or the one that was printed upon you when you were ready to receive her.
When you were strong enough to carry the responsibility and the intensity  of it would no longer harm you.
Oh no, it would excite you!

Or at least; That was the plan.
The plan before you started downplaying, avoiding, covering up and disguising your deepest truth as something that was no longer repulsive and obscene in its brutal honesty. No longer so violently blowing us away, shake us to our core, and divide our lives into before and after.

And I know that with a world filled with real physical violence this is, in particular now, not an easy role to play.
But you are not a bringer of physical violence, not of inequality, not of judgement, and not even of redemption.

What you, Rock Star, need to hear today is that your task was never brutal and violent to begin with.
So there is no reason to be ashamed.

We want you to wake us up with what you have been shown.
And we need it in its original form, without the social veneer, exactly as it was shown to you.

You are not “just” the messenger;
You are the messenger.

Your longing to go all-in is not going to go away.
The option to keep pretending your heart is anywhere else than where it truly is, has expired.

Communicate your availability, and offer your loved ones how you would like to be in their lives.

Never forget that what you’re doing; Hardly anyone is.

And what is hunting you? Haunting you, as soon as you close your eyes after yet another day where at least partially, you got involved in all kinds of things that were not THE thing?
No one, knows the demons emerging from the shadows of your tormented artist soul.

In Indian mythology, the fiercest Goddess is Kali. And the source of her power, the reason of her omnipotence, is because she devours time. With that she will ultimately eat us all.
There is no way to escape her grasp.

The Devi Mahatmya tells of Kali springing from the anger of the goddess Durga to slay the demon Raktabija (“Blood-Seed”).
During the struggle a new demon emerges from each drop of Raktabija’s blood as it hits the ground; to prevent this, Kali laps up the blood before it can reach the ground.

Kali’s long tongue is there to protect us from evil, by licking up the demon’s blood. It is not a sign she is evil.
The string of heads around her neck, are the heads of the demons she slayed, because she was born wild and enraged.
Others say the heads symbolize the false identities we adopt, in order to protect our egos. And that it is our job to liberate ourselves from this false sense of Self.

Unleash your wild and enraged part, to slay the build-up of pretend Selfs.
Lick the blood before it touches the ground, to prevent more harm from being done, and remember;
Only your inner-Kali has the tongue to prevent new demonic spawn.

Let her do the work of purifying who you are and protecting what you love.

only you know the depth you are avoiding

Challenge yourself to move deeper into your art.
The layer where you are showing up professionally, is not where your growth, expansion and purpose lie.

Practice your craft into uncharted territory.

When do you think the average human being realizes the way they are spending their time is not representative of, or no longer reflecting, what they really want out of life?
How many Netflix series, social appointments with non-aligned peers, expensive but joyless holidays, or how many new clothes, cars, houses or partners later, before the lightbulb moment that they are living the wrong life?

Now multiple that by a factor somewhere between 2 and 20;
That’s how long it will take us before we realize we are absolutely coasting, when it comes to the work we have properly, and long ago, identified as ours.

With a realistic option of never finding out and staying in that zone where other, more worldly matters or needs, seemed more important.
And our craft will ultimately stagnate at the bare minimum necessary for our identity and the benefits it brings us, financially or otherwise.

The living, breathing relationship we once had with our art, will become a shadow of what it once was, and we risk becoming caricatures.
Not caricatures as humans, at least not as first sight.
We will be more in tune with those around us, more sensitive to their needs and more susceptible to their worry.

But shadow professionals, who just pretend to be the craftsman they once were.

What good can we do, when we may be committed to the work but not to the unexplored depths of it, where the work as the world recognizes it, is no longer distinguishable?

Your commitment is to the wholeness of it, not just to the part you can justify.

it was never under your command

You decide what you do with the endless stream of ideas, the urges and the hunches, the inspiration and the passion.

Once picked up, some of them will stay with you for life. Others will leave. Sometimes without you noticing.

“You have the right to work, but for the work’s sake only. You have no right to the fruits of work.”

and

“Work done with anxiety about results is far inferior to work done without such anxiety, in the calm of self-surrender.”

And there is something about not being lazy in there too, but for now I’m just gonna go with the assumption that like your average prolific, poorly understood Rock Star, your art has the potential to devour you if left unexpressed.
That for you, the option of developing a Netflix addiction is not on the table.
Nor under the table, or within a five mile radius of it.

I’m going to label it a case of eating or being eaten, but between you and your art.
So in a very metaphorical, close to biblical Hero-journey kind of way, where every time The Call comes you roll your eyes thinking:
“Oh no! Not again! Please tell me, this one is not for me. I haven’t even gotten my head around the last one!”

But what if you would release any idea of you having to actually do, shape or manage it?
That even your skill and experience are not meant to be what you are relying on right now.
That it wants you in your purest, most receptive state. Not like a vessel, but like a doorway.
A gate from the world of ideas into reality.

In the four years I took my training as a yoga teacher, and a couple of years after when I was still very much living in the yoga world, the world of Ayurveda and of the Bhagavad Gita where the quote is from;
I encountered a strange but beautiful story, multiple times, every time from a different source, about the souls of unborn children.
That they pick you, before you are pregnant.

And that the Wise, who are initiated in this knowledge, can see the soul in your presence before you are pregnant. 
They know that you will soon be.

So welcome every new idea, but do not name it yet nor get attached to its presence.
There is still a long way to go before it is manifested in a recognizable form and even longer before it grows into maturity.

But just like children, our ideas need us as facilitators and as stewards, using skills on the fly we didn’t even know we had.
They need us to be a strong gateway or lay the path for them into the world.

Whether it’s a business idea, a creative idea, an abstract concept;
Whether it’s an activity you’d like to pick up, a country you’re curious about, or an event you think should be organized;
Let the idea come through, and guide it into this world.

We do not know if this is their moment to be manifested in true form, nor do we know how long they will stay on this earth.

And it is not our job to know, either.

You were given the size you were meant to have, to bring what you came here to bring.

To cut, limit, to apologize for who you are and even to soften rough edges;
It is to risk your entire legacy.

A mouse is small, an elephant big and a whale is even bigger. All beings have exactly the size they are meant to have.
And we humans too are all born having certain talents and a personality, all of them developing over time. Until some of us reach a stage where Normal is no longer covering it.

When you are beginning to stand out like a dormouse between the house mice;
An African elephant between Asian ones;
Or a blue whale between the humpbacks.

And regardless if you are sensitive to this animal analogy or not, your job will be to accept this as an unchangeable reality, that will express itself at various moments throughout your life.
And almost exclusively;
In the most inconvenient and unfavorable of ways!

But your being different, your inability to commit to the simplest of tasks, to show up for the smallest things or your sensitivity to the horrendous mundaneness of the daily grind?
Well?
Could it be because perhaps you were born for bigger and bolder things?

That maybe, your expansion lies somewhere else, where all the little things will fall away, or in place, or maybe they go nowhere at all, yet they will lose their relevance.

Move into full expansion of your Blue whale-ness, your African elephant-ness, your dormouse-ness and your Rock Star-ness.

That, is YOUR commitment!

there is no mistaking if you are called

If you can do something else, and find it joyful and fulfilling;
You are not.

Let me rephrase:
If you can do something else.

There is more than one writer who holds the belief that writing should have a sense of urgency to it.
That there is no point in doing it, because you want to BECOME, a writer.

You either are or you aren’t.

And what better time to be reminded of that urgency you should feel before getting out there, than today?
When in our modern world even the bakery around the corner uses social media to get their message out. And that’s a business we all support and feel the human(ity) behind it.
It is certainly preferable to having our minds and wallets hacked by AI generated products and commercials.

In today’s landscape, it is so easy to feel shame around supporting your (your!) art and/or your heartfelt business by getting your message out.
It sure as hell requires some balls to be visible as WHO you are and WHAT you are, without hiding behind whatever!

And yet, I am not here to help you to dip your toes in, nor to coach you through the treacherous waters of social media and into the safety of a Patreon account.
I am here to say;
Then you are not called.

And wow, wouldn’t any of us called ones be very happy to trade places with you!
I know I would.
Oh! The wonderfully neutral yoga- or coaching business I could build.
The soft and gentle life, revolving about self-care and small adventures I could have!!

And I bet Alan Wilson Watts would love to trade places with a non-called one too:

“Take a deep breath and tell us your deepest, darkest secret, so we can wipe our brow and know that we’re not alone.
Write like you have a message from the king. Or don’t.
Who knows, maybe you’re one of the lucky ones who doesn’t have to.”

So when you know, you know.

Either you have options to get your message out or you do not.

When your message tries to cut itself a way out of your heart every time you deny it, and your only choice is between letting it out – where fear of the external consequences to being visible is the least of your worries compared to the turmoil going on inside! –
or getting drugs strong enough to shut the shrieking inner voice down.

The good news is that if you are called, unlike others “in today’s world”;
You no doubt have what it takes to take that message where it belongs!

Out there.
On a stage.
The biggest one you can find without being thrown in jail.

And even then, you’ll at least consider it.

it is time to burn what you know

Where you are going no one can help you, not even you.
Let go.

Today was quite possibly the most important day of the year, if not the last two decades.
Finally, the last revelations came and a new truth was revealed.

The truth I saw was incredibly potent, heartwarming and to be honest there was an intellectual, ego-driven part in me that wanted to write this down!
This- which proved I had been right all along.

About male and female energy.
About yoga.
About mentoring.
About the world.
Capitalism, financial success, and the blueprints leading there.

If I would write this down, I would not only have an explanation for my own past 25 years;
But for every problem I could ever encounter and in all probability-
what anybody else would encounter.

If I could just give that brain of mine one extra squeeze!!
Pen in hand, this time.

Until it hit me- no.

I was going to say no to this.

I was going to soak up this moment of all-knowing, this perfection of insight and then I was going to do the literally unthinkable;
Let it all go.

Because although this work of analyzing into the deepest depths, has made today the most profound day I ever recall having;
It has had its purpose.

Knowledge, whether from others or our own, is not meant to be held on to. Not by us, the artists and creators of this world.

Your unfinished projects, your unfulfilled promises, your unpublished works, and your unsold art;
Your finished projects, your fulfilled promises, your published work and your sold art;
Let go.

Your work is now.
