Every time you picked up a pen or a paint brush;
Every time you thought about a concept, attributed meaning, or invested way more than required from a productivity point of view.

The times you “wasted” capitalist resources, to  your creativity.

All your pettiness, was burned at the stake.

I had already started following three gynecologists on Instagram when I came across her, and immediately sensed she was different.
Where the other three had felt like accounts that were aligned and even necessary, in understanding my midlife health risks and the utter fucked upness of women being pushed over the cliff of untreated menopause;
She, stood out.

And even now that I have already unfollowed the first accounts about menopause, I know hers will stay on long after my transformation into this new phase of life has been completed.
And after the menopause revolution has changed the world.

Her name is Karen Tang, and much like other gynecologists she has published a book (It’s Not Hysteria; The Truth About Pelvic Pain, Period Problems, and Your Gynaecologic Health) and she’s using social media to comment on viral content regarding women and women’s health.
Her latest were on “Tampon Tim” and the discussion around the gender of female athletes at the Olympic games.

Quite similar to other gynecologists fighting disinformation… and yet!
There is something about doctor Tang, that immediately stood out to me.
And I have tried to analyse what it was.

What is it that makes Dr. Karen Tang stand out within this very vocal group of professionals that consists exclusively of badass, outspoken, social-media crushing, pioneers?

The first video I remember seeing, is still the one where I think we should start.

I will share it with you in a minute, but want to preface it by saying that in marketing terms it is a straight up sales video;
Which is very controversial in almost any field, because there are very few  business owners but in particular very few professionals in the public sector, who are comfortable selling!

Just going on camera, saying: “Hey! Wanna buy my stuff? Click the link!”
To most, this would feel like voluntarily tying themselves to the stake from the opening paragraph, and setting it on fire.

Sometimes I suspect the main drive of most professionals to engage on social media, is even because they’ll do anything to not have to ask directly for the sale. Or at least, nothing past the price of a hardcover.

Where I personally love seeing someone making a sales post.
Feeling someone sell what they got provides me with a rare and unexpected moment of feeling safe, warm and cared for.
As if everything is right in the world.
(When, obviously, that is far from the case!)

I understand Dr.Tang is a medical professional, and not a commercial airline!
She’s not on the far end of the business spectrum, and many of her patients will be compensated by their insurances for the health care her clinic provides.
But nevertheless, the video I encountered which made Dr.Tang my immediate favorite, was/is a sales video.
Something other people might not like or even find offensive.

Which is why I wanted to preface it by having said that this (a sales post) is a sweet spot of mine.
I love seeing a professional in their power, even when it is done poorly and quirky;
But especially, if it’s done the way Dr.Tang did it.
You know why?

Because Dr. Karen Tang’s “sales video” was all about her core message.
It was freeing, empowering and normalizing any medical question or procedure you might need.

And no, it is not a coincidence.
Because the core message of this video, the empowerment of women and for them to take agency over their own health, is the same as the dedication in her book:

To everyone whose health has suffered because of the patriarchy.
You are seen, you are believed, and you deserve change.

So point taken that Dr. Karen Tang, who describes herself as “geriatric TikToker”, has a message and knows how to get it out there.

Which still did not give me anything to go on….
About why she is so entirely different. Why even within her peer group, she stands out and I know she’s the one I will stay with long after I have lost interest in the topic.

I was thinking about the topic I wanted to write about today.
Creativity.

How creativity changes us, so much more than we can possibly think. And that we (creative people) should have a better sense of that.
A better understanding about the sacrifice we have already made, but also about the new opportunities we have gained to move around much freer, than everybody else.

That the activity of being creative in whatever it is we do, liberates us from some pesky human limitations.
Just that we usually don’t notice…..

We don’t notice because we are very aware how much our creativity puts us behind!

How much valuable time and opportunities we lose, simply because we are CALLED to make our art or do other things in a creative way.
We don’t have the time to be that efficient, like other people do.

I was going to write about how hours of being creative has freed you from the judging eye of others. Freed you from a need for validation, liberated you from the crippling fear to fail.
Those things do not exist, in practicing creatives.

Creativity, art, is defined by the ability to fail.
There is a chance it can go wrong.
And on the other hand, there is the understanding that nothing can ever go wrong.
That it is the being in the process, that is the reward. It is what is called Karma Yoga, the yoga of doing.
And that we should never be attached to the fruits of our labor.

As someone who knows very little about the bible, I assume this could be linked to the fact that the bible states that you will get everything directly from God – not work for it.
“He would give you a land with great and splendid cities that you did not build, with houses full of every good thing with which you did not fill them, with wells that you did not dig, and with vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant”.

What creativity, art making, Indian wisdom, and the bible agree on, is that the outcome does not come from your work.
That work itself, is sacred.

And I was going to write this whole story, about how your creative work has burned away your social attachments.
How you no longer care about the validation of others, nor fear the judgement of them, because you had to let go of those things.
You could not carry them with you, into the fire of your creative calling.

And what was still clinging on you, was burned.

I was going to write about how your creative work, equals years or decades of spiritual practice.
That you have an ego, blank and pure like a child’s.
Your sense of self is no longer corrupted because all things artificial and superficial, were taken from you long ago.

Sacrificed, in the fire.
When you were doing your work.

And as I went about the first hours of my day, looking forward to sitting behind my desk and being able to write, it suddenly hit me;

That, is her secret!

That, is what sets Dr. Karen Tang apart!

She has gone so deeply through her creative fires, that she no longer cares what we think of her, or her work, her Tiktoks, or about her making a sales video for her new clinic.

She was liberated by going so deeply into her creative work, everything that was not pure, was stripped away from her.

As opposed to all the other professionals whom I have enjoyed, learned from, and whose work I have recommended;
Dr. Karen Tang, is liberated.

I would even say:
Enlightened.

It is more often than not dressed mundanely, not extravagantly.
Its appearance ordinary, and with manners that are unpleasant yet could hardly count as malignant.
If it wasn’t for the ice cold shivers they gave you.

But beware most of all, if you feel lost, furious or sick, and no one is near.

If I am not mistaken, it was the movie Unbreakable – which as sort of a random ps, I just read was expanded into a superhero trilogy with Split (2016) and Glass (2019) –
where the villain, a man whom appeared vulnerable because his bones broke at the slightest pressure, explained how villains never know they’re villains.

A lesson we should all remember.

The entire idea behind right and wrong, is that there is an awareness in the do-er, about the ethics behind their wrongdoings.
That they are running this grand scheme, a layer on top of the real reality, of lies and deceit. All to willingly pull to them money, power, access and exclusivity that does not belong to them!

And there is this unspoken expectation that if we find out and call them out, it will come with some sort of gratification.
Like catching someone cheating with an ace up their sleeve.

But like the villain in the movie Unbreakable said:
Villains do not know they’re villains.
In their head, everything makes sense.

So it is pointless to have a conversation with a villain, because you will never get the apology, the remorse, nor the change in behavior you want because they will simply deny it.
Either because they have buried their memory of it;
Because they have rationalized it;
Or because the consequences of admitting their wrongdoings are worse than what can happen if they keep denying it was their ace and their sleeve.
They just burrowed the vest from someone at the local casino.

The crap you will hear, my friends.

So I never call someone out over anything-
I just pull up my boundaries, so that they no longer have access to the thing they’re stealing or acquiring through me.
And if I can’t, then I acknowledge that I am in danger, should practice great caution and make it a longer term project to change the situation, so that it can be done more safely.

But whatever you do, do not deny the evilness of what you see, just because the person who is doing it, is not aware of it.
The absence of awareness is the hallmark of evil.

But the greatest trick is even less costume-dress-up-devil worthy, and even more mundane.
And for this I have another movie to quote, although its quote is not a 100% match to the point I will be making.
But the quote is too good not to use.

 “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.”

The Usual Suspects

The biggest evil, in the sense that it is hardest to detect, avoid, explain and nearly impossible to fight is when no one is there, to take responsibility for it.

If I would ever give a TED Talk, I may choose this subject.
The nature of evil is that no one is responsible, because there is no one there.
So in a way, the greatest evil, is that IT exists, but it no longer has a bearer!

It is a ghost.

So what is this phantom evil?

Usually the blame is put on a large and impenetrable organization.

Following examples may be specific for The Netherlands, but I fear your country wherever you live, will have similar constructions.

Banks are responsible for fraud, instead of the police.
Tax services are responsible for giving allowances instead of social services.
You have to go through an impenetrable system to make an appointment with “a” medical provider (not knowing with whom because no one is responsible).
And no one is responsible for waiting lists to public services.

During the Covid pandemic, in the Netherlands, the government piggy backed the majority of their measures onto existing small business, bigger corporations and independents.
Turning them into henchmen.

If you wanted to have a business or ran a public building or service, where you saw people in real life; In 2020-2021?
You became an enforcer of the law.

Meaning that if anything went wrong you were in a confrontation with the client, student, employee, visitor or customer, and the government did not have to police 99% of civilians.

The people who had made the laws, had given the execution to others who were already in the system (entrepreneurs and public service workers).

But it’s not just the government throwing their responsibility over the fence of course.
Every time you lose an account from Facebook, Instagram and no one is there to help you, you encounter a situation where no one is responsible because no one is there and like David to Goliath you are fighting “the system”.
Which doesn’t give you anything to hold on to.
In 2024, Goliath is a ghost.

And then you have other citizens weaponizing those government organizations or impersonal big tech companies.

Blaming a malfunction in their phone for not contacting you.
The bank for not paying you.
Postal services for not delivering the letter.

And so on.

Real evil only has one form:
It is where no one is responsible.

Either because there is no awareness, or because responsibility has symbolically, sloppily and usually very much without any consent, been transferred onto someone else.

Anyone or anything, any situation, system or any organization in your life not taking full responsibility, or not crystal fucking clear of how they are responsible and whose job it is to help you fix things when something has gone wrong;

That, is where evil lies.

every day is Lion’s Gate portal

You raise the bar and demand more of yourself, knowing you owe it to the ones who became before you and to higher forces.
Beyond the veil.

Supporting and guiding you every step of the way.

And that success is defined by doing today’s work.

I got on the Lion’s Gate wagon pretty late. 2020? 2021? And to this day I am on the fence about what I think about it.
Or maybe it is better to say that I instantly loved the idea of making the 8th of the 8th a special day, 8 being the number of power, money and success, but that my enthusiasm and intuitive attribution to what this mighty date was about, always preceded the official astrological interpretation.

So although I’ve seen videos, in the last couple of years, about its meaning, it never stuck as much as my intuitive feeling about it.

Technically I don’t even know if it is Lion’s Gate or Lion’s Portal or Lion’s Gate Portal?
And just like the details of its official meaning, I don’t really care.

But I will see what I can up in a few minutes about the meaning of Lion’s Gate.
Though I must warn you, that for me, what others said about it, has never really change nor particularly attributed, to my intuitive and stirring  understanding that the 8th of August, was a cosmic springboard.
An opportunity, not to be missed!

But I’ll see what the official version is.

Hold on, be right back.

The top results are from the Hindustan Times, and they point out that this year’s Lion’s Gate Portal (they too, use the three word name) is even more powerful than other years, because the numbers of the year, also add up to 8
2+0+2+4=8 

And it gives a great definition of what it is;

“The Lion’s Gate Portal physically occurs when the Sun in Leo aligns with the star Sirius, Orion’s belt, and the Earth.

This alignment happens during Leo season, from July 28 to August 12, but Lion’s Gate Portal peak time is on August 8, which is considered the most powerful day.”

I’ve had a mild Sirius obsession ever since I saw the series Ancient Apocalypse, pointing out how all the ancient sacred sites (which the creator of the series deems to be tens of thousands of years older than what archeologists claim they are) are built around Sirius.

And the Sirius obsession came on top of an already existing fascination with Orion, because Rutger Hauer’s Tears In The Rain monologue in sci-fi movie Blade Runner  (a 42 word speech that has its own Wiki page!) contains the words;

“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe.
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.”

Orion!

And my interest in Orion was intensified with something fascinating from the world of astronomy, which I learned just last year.
That there is a star, in the “shoulder of Orion” (just that location! the shoulder of Orion!) which is dying.

Anybody who knows anything about astronomy, which obviously excludes me, but they are all watching Orion for this star, which is dying.

“Betelgeuse is a red supergiant star in the constellation of Orion.
Betelgeuse has evolved rapidly because of its large mass, and is expected to end its evolution with a supernova explosion.

When Betelgeuse explodes, it will shine as bright as the half-Moon for more than three months; life on Earth will be unharmed.”

Naturally, now that I have learned Lion’s Gate isn’t mere a numeric oddity, but is linked to my favorite stars Sirius and Orion, I love it even more!

So back to the Hindustan Times;

They point out the symbolic meaning of the number 8, which is in line with the off-the-cuff definition I shared with you prior.
And they point out that the number 8, when on its side, is the symbol for infinity.

Lion’s Gate is the best day of the year (I’m paraphrasing, this is me, Suzanne, no longer the Hindustan Times!) to connect with your highest dreams.
To lock in the vision and to write them out or create a vision board or another visual or actionable reminder of where you want your life to go.

I haven’t checked but I promise you that if you go on YouTube and look for Lion’s Gate Portal and Manifestation – you will find a lot of inspiration.

Or you can just use the final paragraph of the article in the Hindustan Times.

Or maybe you’re just like me and you shouldn’t really spend too much time getting into the details.
You’re good to go, just knowing this day is special.

And that the door to your unlimited potential, is wide open.

And that when one star dies;

look for the symbolism

The things you know you’ll one day be thinking, doing, owning;
The way you’ll be behaving and believing;
They’re more than a random collection.

But the blueprint of the person wanting to come out.

Every couple of weeks, and this can stretch up to two, three months, I don’t know I have never counted it, but quit frequently and consistently, there is a build-up in my house of overdue household work.
And I even came up with a classification system, a boundary which when crossed, describes that I really let livability fall by the wayside here.

It is the boundary when a living space becomes a saloon or a stall, because there is so much dirt that I brought inside the home, returning from my daily walks and from feeding the hedgehogs.
Any requests to drop by my house within hours, will be met with a firm No!
For multiple reasons, but it’s also because I know my house does not have the basics in place to welcome people in.
That I m at That Stage, again.

Naturally if I then finally clean up, usually because I have a guest coming over, I love it with all my heart and swear on all things holy I will keep it this way, from now on.
That I m never letting go of this Sanctuary Feel that my house now gives me!

Until I do of course.
And usually sooner rather than later.

It’s easier for me to commit to daily blogging, daily yoga, daily walks, and I have been consistent with the hedgehogs for years but a daily cleanup in order to keep the house livable?
Obviously my Achilles Heel.

Which wouldn’t be such a big deal, if the symbolism behind it wouldn’t be so disturbing.
Because it conveys lack of ownership.

I think what we are all secretly striving for, even from a consumer standpoint – and this is the exact reason why mindless consumption is so unsatisfactory-
What we crave for, what fills us up, and empowers us is;
Ownership.
But not ownership in the literal sense, as something that strictly speaking now falls under our jurisdiction.

If I buy a purse, I am now the owner of it.
But it will not be satisfying, unless I start cultivating an active relationship to the purse.

The reason my poor housekeeping skills are a problem is because they reveal that I am not actively engaging with my surroundings.
And the house-stall-crossover that is my hallway, is a symbol of that.

And trust me when I say that unfortunately the hallway is not the only, nor the most severe area of my life, where this problem exists!
There are multiple ones.

Multiple areas that symbolize a lack of ownership.
Not the literal, but the metaphorical ownership.
I’m not showing up, I’m not in an active relationship to them.

Beware also, if you ARE in an active relationship – but it is one of problems and complications!
No good can come from that either.
Find your peace within yourself, let go of ego, panic, anxiety and so on.
Cultivate a healthy relationship to the area within yourself, first. Don’t try “fixing” this highly volatile situation.
Practice equanimity first.

So there is more to say about this, more flavors than withdrawing, not showing up. But because not-showing-up is my coping style, and not conflict, I am more knowledgeable in that area.
Which is why it is dominant in this post.

But there is also good news.
Because I really believe that when we think about what we’d like in life, we’re making things way too complicated.
In the sense that we’re aiming for new things which require more time, more money (a bigger house, a new bag) or that are even beyond our direct circle of influence (more friends, a new partner, different colleagues).
The good news is it’s not about adding the new.

What we crave is to have a deeper, more fulfilling relationship with the bag we already own, with the house where we currently live, with the people in our lives already.

The areas in your life you do not feel good about, symbolize something, yes….  For example my dirty hall symbolizes an inability to take care of my home as a whole.
But their current state, also symbolizes something!
Chaos, lack or conflict.
Or in my case;
Neglect.

Instead of focusing on the tasks to clean the area up, or redesign it, ask yourself:

How can I make this area a symbol of * enter whatever it is you want * 

Peace.
Love.
Success.
Adventure.
Comfort.
Health.

Like the Cheshire Cat said to Alice:
“If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.”

But it’s not just about where you go, but also how, you go.

What guiding principle have you chosen?

I have a stack of old collectable cards here on my desk, all famous people from the first half of the 20th century. I bought them ten days ago, at a shop called Erix Collectables in Waalre, The Netherlands.
At a bargain price because Eric had ultimately decided this collection will not be part of his core business, and that they should be priced accessibly.

Making the box of assorted cards a true gem for anyone curious, wanting
to be surprised!
Anyone who loves nostalgia, and being a part of history.

The idea that these cards have been going through the hands of dozens of people, for decades, is absolutely irresistible to me.

I bought three of them:
Famous People, Brooke Bond Tea (1969)
Red Riding Hood by Victoria Biscuits (complete set, est 1910)
Submarines from Chocolat l’Aiglon (1940)

But perhaps it was telling, for my relationship to this store and why I was there, that the cards appealed to me so much.
Because I do not consider myself the right or target audience for the store.

Erix Collectables specializes in vintage Lego- and Playmobil sets, Fischertechnik, action figures and vintage computers and rarities.

It’s tempting to say I was “tagging along”, because I was there with a friend who fits the niche of the shop perfectly.
My friend can recognize a € 160 euro computer game and can tell me why it is so expensive in a heartbeat.
Which was because it was the very first game brought about by famous movie producers, and it would later spin into a whole gaming franchise, where this first game was then included in one of the later editions.
As sort of a gadget, a game in a game.

So I can’t remember what the name of the game was but let’s say the name of this illustrious game was Trading Card (TC for fans!) then TC IX would have a level where you would encounter the original TC and play it.
A game within a game.

And a game within a box waiting at Erix Collectables for those who obviously have at least some knowledge about computer games.
Because I probably just gave the worst description of a video game since 1969.

So anyway, it is tempting to say I was tagging along, and not really the right audience for the shop, but this is not true because
A. I found the shop first, and was the one who introduced my friend
And
B. I absolutely love it there.

I usually go heavily over budget and come home with the weirdest things, and a singing heart!
I also buy a lot of cds there, typically.

Anyway, what I want to point out is that Erix Collectables, despite having a collection of rare trading cards, decided they were not his core business.
He has guiding principles, and this is one of them.
Which once the decision was made, must have made it relatively easy for him to let go of this collection in the form of packaging them as an impulse purchase near the exit.

Eric also has other principles of course:
To take really good care of things (hence the carefully crafted and packaged stacks) and to make the shop as attractive as possible in particular for the people outside of the target audience.
To have plenty of things on sale that do not require decades of inside knowledge and that come at a Hell Yes price!

Partners, children, friends of clients, and also for the people of the village, who can just walk into the shop without having a clear expectation;
He tries to have something there for everybody. 

He has a North Star;
He knows what he wants.
And then everything else can fall in line with that.

So instead of fussing over what you should be selling, or how to run your business, how to get your work in front of people and what your end game is;
Shift your perspective.
Take it up a notch and wonder;

What is the core, of what I want to be known for?

And then afterwards, everything else can fall in line with that.

Because as fun as surprise customers are, who come to your shop to be surprised and entertained, and who can’t wait to fearlessly jump down your rabbit hole;
It really works even better if you know what your € 160 game is!

If you know what the beacons are in your Wonderland, and you are the person holding the map;
Knowing how to navigate.

And how to get “there”.

When France was on the verge of being invaded, Anais Nin lived in a houseboat on the river Seine.
Weeks in which she committed to finishing her project of painting and fixing the boat.

Knowing, it seemed silly in light of the adversity ahead.

But it kept her from despair.

“Fighting for peace is like fucking for virginity.”
That is how I learned the phrase in the 80s. 

But there are actually two origin stories to this quote, and both are slightly different to that one.

“Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity.”
Misattributed, to George Carlin.
He never said that, but internet thinks he did.
There are entire pages dedicated to all the quotes falsely attributed to him.

And a sign in an Vietnam War protest in 1969:
“Bombing for peace is like fucking for virginity.”
There is a photo from this one, shared on History in Pics, so we can assume this one is real.

Now there are few topics studied as intensely as the relationship between war, peace, politics or governing systems.
A conversation to which I will have nothing to contribute to, obviously.

But I do want to add an alternative quote which I found on researching the above one.
Words derived from a Roman record:

“Si vis pacem, para bellum”

If you want peace, prepare for war.

Fearing the price you have to pay for invading and taking over another country, seems just as essential to me as having a justice system in place.
Fear for the consequences may stop a villain in their tracks.

So I do not want to “dumb this discussion down” to pure pacifism.

As a final thought, before we go back to holding the peace, I want to add a famous story about a big venomous snake, taken from the Indian storybook “Tales and Parables of Sri Ramakrishna”.

It is the story about a snake going on the spiritual path, but getting in huge trouble because he was no longer fending for himself.
He was at the mercy of all who wanted to harm him.
And as sort of a ps he was also eating the wrong diet for his intestines, because he turned veganist.
Again, a difficult topic, because who is to say what the human intestines are made for?
But just putting it here, for your consideration.
Self-harm in the form of malnutrition, is also harm. If you want to live a peaceful life you must also consider giving your body what it needs. Veganism for humans too, should come from understanding or believing it is the best thing for your body. It should be an informed choice, not just a spiritual choice from not wanting to harm because then you are not counting harm to your own body.

But I digress!

Either way, so the snake was in poor condition when the sage who had given him his initiation, visited him again.
And the advice the sage gave him, was to stand up for himself:
“I never told you not to hiss!” he said to the snake.
A variation to the Roman saying, to prepare for war.

So obviously when I say “Hold the peace” I do not mean to not fend for yourself, to not prepare for war when you think that is what is required, and I certainly am not telling you not to hiss, when needed.
Taking care of yourself, and learning to stand your ground in this world, is a spiritual practice.

But what “Hold the peace” means for me, and in the light of this blogpost, is to not give your peace away.
Ground yourself in practices of beauty, like Anais Nin renovating her houseboat on the river Seine.
And do not give up peace in order to “achieve” the things in life you find important.

Because what good are our accomplishments, if we have given up our peace in order to achieve them?

If we have given up the peace in ourselves, and are now in panic, in anxiety, in anger?
How can whatever we achieve have been worth that terrible loss?

At the end of her life Anais Nin started giving lectures, and in one of them she looked back at the first years of the war, when she was still in Paris.
Before she would migrate to the United States.

Looking back, what did she learn?
What would she like to tell the audience about the origins of war, now that decades had passed?

“If each one of us took very seriously the fact that every little act, every little word we utter, every injury we do to another human being is really what is projected into larger issues (…)
Then each one of us would do the work of creating a human self that wouldn’t go to war.”

Because you really can’t fight for peace, any more than you can fuck for virginity.

But should you desire to do so?
Yes, you can HOLD your virginity.
You can protect the integrity of your body, you can revere its purity.
You can acknowledge and celebrate your virgin state.
Hiss defending it.
Prepare to fight for it.

And in the same manner you can HOLD, the peace.
Even when the enemy is on the doorstep, you can choose beauty.

Anais Nin called it;
“A refusal to despair.”

Am I making an anal sex joke?
Clearly, yes!
Oh come on, if Disney is having them in the latest Deadpool, it can no longer be considered a stretch for the Rock Stars of the world. 

But am I serious in a metaphorical sense about guarding your boundaries?

You bet.

My professional fascination with the concept Rock Star started in 2019 already, but like a Matryoshka doll there is always another layer to be found.
A new discovery where I think:
“This is so interesting! Antagonist and rebellious to the bone!”

The principles of what make a Rock Star a Rock Star are not an accident, although it may seem that way because of their unregulated nature.
And sometimes Rock Stars themselves are too busy fighting their own demons, trying to drown them in substance abuse, and their responses way too reactive to be considered as being based on such a lofty thing as policies, but trust me;
They are rooted in a solid foundation.

Few things about them fall into the chance category, yet they’re also not by design. Rock Stars do not go around with a notepad aligning every aspect of their plan to conquer the world in a Rock Star way.
Far from it!

The reason I say it is nor chance, nor luck, nor design behind what makes a Rock Star a Rock Star, is because it is a direct consequence of who they are.
And who they are is vastly different than others, resulting in a way they do things in stark contrast to the rest of us.

Including a set of boundaries, that will bounce off any intruders and have them run for the hills.
And all this, sporting a casual “don’t know which way is up” style.
We don’t see a Rock Star trying. There is no effort involved.

If you ARE your principles, you don’t need to write them out, explain them or think about them.

So No, there is no backdoor entrance to being in a Rock Star’s life.

Whether they are literally world famous and have people guarding their gated property and screening everyone who enters, or whether they are living hand to mouth;
Everyone in their lives is there for one reason only-
because the Rock Star wants them there.
End of story.

So there you go.

As long as you’re still trying, thinking, or questioning things that a Rock Star would deflect or say Yes to like that?!
You’re either not a Rock Star.

Or you have lost yourself, and it is time.

Time, to become the Rock Star you were born to be.

the vision of being by doing

That is the right order.
You first have the vision, then you become the person in the vision, and then you start doing what the person in the vision is doing.

Many methods work the other way around and start with the doing, assuming the sequence will be created, in reverse.

Never worked for me.

The trickiest thing is the fact that the people who have accomplished something are hardly ever able to identify what got them there. Yet, in their excitement about their accomplishment and their eagerness to share, they will often create a system that reflects the journey there, and the reality of where they are now.

Here is a new lineage.
An X step process.
A new school of thought.
Here is a course where I will teach you all about it.

And it is also related to the idea of changing your habits, which then change your lifestyle because you have to in order to fit that new stuff in;
Which then in turn changes your identity.

You have “become” a runner, because you run three times a week.
You now identify as an artist, because you dedicate one day a week to painting.
A writer because you blog daily.

Sounds solid, but in my case?
It has never, worked like that.

I have been writing consistently for fifteen years, as I also write under another name since 2006.
But I do not identify as a writer.
I’ve learned to live with it, is how I would call it.
Like Eddie in Venom learns to live with the extraterrestrial inside of him. He shares his body and personality, and that’s just the way it is.

But Eddie did not practice being an extraterrestrial every day, and then one day the transformation was complete and he was now Venom.
Eddie didn’t have a say in this.

And it’s the same with us; We don’t really have a choice in who we become.

I’m just gonna say it out loud;
Not buying the whole identity by doing (usually some habit) thing! 

And even if research shows otherwise?
I will give you otherwise!

Otherwise is;
I am 52 years old, and in my personal life, and in the people I have known, I have never seen doing amounting to anything but mediocre.
To mundane.
To okay-ish.

But I have not seen anybody RISE to anything!

Which totally makes sense, because you do not BECOME VENOM LEVEL ANYTHING, from doing!

You become it from being possessed.

So how are we possessed? When do we know that this extra-terrestial being has nested itself into us? Either, we get a vision. Or we suddenly start doing something, that we have never been doing before.

Slash, the guitarist from Guns N’ Roses, used to be a kid-mountainbiker. He spent every waking minute learning new tricks on his bike, and riding the (if I recall) Hollywood Hills.
Until the day he started playing guitar, and cold turkey broke with his bike riding.
And the rest is history.

I don’t know if Slash started with a vision of wanting to become a guitar playing, or if he had a taste of it, and liked it.
But it was a full transformation.
The guitar Venom was inside of him.

In the same way I started writing in 2006. I just did. 
Before I realized I was going through an irreversible process, Writing Venom had taken over.

But I have also had the milder version, the one where you feel more control, and that is in a way more gratifying because you get more time to let the idea float for a bit. And ripen.
You get time to make the idea your own, and the satisfaction of consciously taking the steps to move towards your vision.

And this was when Madonna had picked up doing yoga and when her album Ray of Light came out in 1998, she spoke about that in many interviews.
And her body looked totally different than from her Evita time.
She had become a mother in between, but her body had become that of an athlete.

And the idea and the vision of me starting yoga myself, was born.

And once I was on the path, I started doing yoga even before my first yoga class. I used the stretches after my running to explore my body in a new way.
And after I had found a class, I would make notes from the exercises we had done, and created my own yoga ringbinder.

The vision had come first. Then I had accepted it to the degree of seeing myself as a practitioner. And after that I started doing.

And I wasn’t really aware about how strict this all had been. And how adamant I am that this is the only correct and wholesome way.
Until this year, I spent hundreds of euros on studying menopause including buying three online courses.

And ending up hating all of them.
One immediately, where I got my money back.
This was one solely on pelvic floor issues, and I hated it with a vengeance. I thought it was so ugly, so compartmentalized. And I knew I was an ungrateful bitch, but at that moment I  really thought that even if I had been incontinent and unable to have sex, I would have preferred that over having to engage in this approach that did nothing but suck the last juices out of you.

Boring topic, I really don’t know why I brought it up. I should have stayed with Slash’s guitar and Madonna’s yoga!
But suffice to say that the other two courses were ultimately also a waste of my money and I have three books here in the shelves.
Confident, neither one will ever get read.

Do you know why?

Because the result will ALWAYS be something acquired, learned, mediocre, boring, compartmental, and loveless.

The courses and the books on menopause ARE, those systems these people came up with, at the end of their journey.
The ones I warned against, in the first paragraph.

These doctors and therapists, are trying to put into words something that consumed them. Something that LIVED them.

Menopause was their guitar, it was their yoga, it was their VENOM!
They were taken over by that field of interest, and now they are communicating facts and exercises, and things we can do, but that is not how this works!

That is, in my opinion, not how anything works.

So stop wasting your time, with anything that is not your VENOM. Anything that does not take over your life as an activity that you can’t put down, or as some idea, some thought, that you just can’t let go of.

Something that deeply fascinates you, and that you know you will never grow tired of.

And embrace, your VENOM.

your soul always speaks

Your true voice can always be heard
Behind a veil of harsh opinions 
Self-doubt, impatience, arrogance or banter.

Its message is always the same, just that its fragility makes it easy too ignore.

Perhaps, too easy.

One of the oldest original children’s books we have in the Netherlands, features a shell that can speak. Multiple decades before digital navigation, this shell already told you how you needed to drive.
And contrary to everything that came after it, it even knew the smallest most obscure pathways.

It always pointed correctly, but because it was so unorthodox in its recommendations, it would frequently end up in an argument with its user. Or the user would get angry with the shell, and then the shell stayed silent.
It took things very personal, and you never knew if and when the shell had forgiven you and would start speaking again.

But you can bet it was never silent because it didn’t know the way;
Just that it refused to help if their contribution was not appreciated and what they said was questioned.

In the same way the message your soul speaks is available to you day after day. Maybe your soul is like the shell, and shuts down when it’s not being listened to.
Or when its advice is deemed too unorthodox to be correct.

But more likely, it isn’t that, what’s silencing the voice.

Just that your let’s say “worldly” thoughts, the ones you’re more comfortable expressing because they seem more logical and more on point, or because they are sexier or more badass – 
That they, are louder, more appealing, easier to choose and to feel good about yourself for having done the right thing.
But have you, really?

The things that are pure are not impressive or strong, nor things to parade around or to impress whomever it is whose respect you hope to win.

The voice of your soul is a soft one.
It does not command, and there are no bells and whistles to it.

But it is always correct in its directions.

And just like the shell it doesn’t waste time arguing.

After the shell had come out of hiding, to intervene at a crucial point in the journey where the protagonist would not have been able to find the road without help, the boy asked the shell why it had stayed in hiding before.
“Were you angry with me?” he asked.
The shell was quiet for a moment. Then it answered:
“Maybe I was sleeping.”

It’s not the big things you trip over;
It’s the small stuff you allowed, without realizing it could undermine everything.

Excellence means the ruthless removal of all, that is not.

Recently, and I mean less than a week ago, I discovered the oddest thing in my relationship style.
Because although I have had a close to lifelong awareness that my love relationships have been excellent, compared to how I have seen other people struggle with it, all the drama seemed to have moved to a different area of life;
My friendships!

Where I know very few people who ever had breakups with friends, and in my circle of friends even fewer, I have had many.
And just like people who have difficulty with love relationships can ultimately, one day, only come to one conclusion, so did I!
The common denominator was of course, me. 

My friends were not to blame because their rep sheets had been a hell of a lot better than mine. Whereas my friendship rampage would continue without them.

Not like crazy drama queen rampage, though.
My friendship breakups have occurred at the same sparse, erratic pace regular breakups do.
And just like with those, I had been sensing something was off for a while.
Yet the breakup itself always came as a very unhappy surprise, and a shock even. Because I had been deluding myself for so long, I was now confronted with both a friend walking out, as well as having deluded and betrayed myself for years.

I had ignored the gut feeling something had been wrong, and thought if I would just try harder, it would go away.
And then it didn’t.

My friendly-not-so-friendly breakups also shared the messy dynamics, that a breakup between partners usually has. As in that there was never one person guilty.
There were “it’s not you is me moments”.
And other insincerity.

But judging from the relief I felt afterwards, I conclude that regardless of how it went down, I had had a say in it.
A big one.

And this summer, after more than a week of sleeping poorly, fussing over a friendship that was showing tear, I decided to take the bull by the horns.
And address my friends.

Or the majority, because I only wanted to send the letter to friends with whom I had no other ties.
If they wanted to end it based on what I wrote them, there would be no practical consequences and they could walk out without ever having to see me again.

The goal of the letter was not to keep them all in my life, but to make it a controlled breakup.
Because a life of messy friendship breakups had taught me that if I waited the friendship would ultimately blow up, with blood everywhere.

That had been the biggest difference between me and other people:
Where they had their emotionally messy breakups in love relationships, I had had them with friendships.

I learned how to control love relationships ages ago. By now my heart will never be broken in a massively disrupting way, ever again.

But friendships?
I have got decades of explosions.
Like I said! Nothing maniacal! 
And they are irregular, ranging from every year and the longest I have gone without a friend breakup is 8 years.
Exactly the type of pattern I expect breakups in love relationships would have for others.

So, I wrote them letters and ever since then I have been on and off, wrestling my own thoughts. Wondering, how I had ever dared to do this? Risking my whole circle of friends.
And at the same time coaching myself through it, that this was the right thing to do.
That I had to first set everybody free, in order to prevent more ugly breakups.
I needed the choice to be my friend, to be a new one.

A choice, with the understanding that I would only be doing the things I knew I was good at, and that had a proven record of resulting in great relationships.
I would no longer be doing things, I knew I was bad at.
Because they had proven to be at the root of all evil.

Catering to parts of a friendship I totally suck at, had proven to be a huge liability.

I do it because it’s normal. Because I think it is expected. Because I think the other person will think I don’t love them if I don’t. And so on and so forth.

When in my best friendships?
I don’t do ANY of that!!

I could map out a list of things, that if I am doing them in a friendship?
They go straight to the breakup nominee list.
I tell myself I am being a good friend, but in reality I am digging a hole in the ground to bury it.
A trap, for the friendship to fall into, and that I can say I didn’t have anything to do with it.

In these long days of waiting, I have come to understand, that you should never be doing what is not your zone of genius.
Not unless you want to give yourself an easy ticket out, without having to take responsibility for it.

If I let someone reject me on things I hate doing, that could be a tactic of course.

Yet if you decide to only focus on what it is you are really good at?
Whether that is within your work, your friendships style, whether it is your hobby, whether it is how you relate to your family;
If you stick to what you know you are really great at?

You will be bringing the best, and be giving the real you. In integrity, and fully authentic.
Which will feel great, I can tell you that.

But the real reason why you should refrain with all your might, to do things you do not want to do, is that those are the things you can also trip over.
And are even at bigger risk, to trip over.

When you’re doing things you do not want and you trip, you end up face down on the road!
Not wanting to get up.
Just like I didn’t fight for those friendships, and was happy they had ended.
I just stayed down until the other person had left.

Make sure they’re 100% authentic and aligned, because you can trip over any insincere thing!

It’s like how in America the FBI has caught the biggest criminals through tax fraud. 
Not for murder or running a mob or a drug cartel.

Just like those American criminals, you will be tripping over the small things that you thought were the least of your worries.
In all areas of life.

The reason my love relationships have become flawless whereas my friendships, and the blowing up of them, was showing no learning curve whatsoever, is because I PAY ATTENTION to all the little things in my love relationships.
I do not leave all the itsy bitsy boundary issues, all the power struggle, consent asking but also consent requirements;
I do not leave those things up to chance in my love relationships!

I make sure that when it comes to love; Our road is clear.
If there is a possible obstacle I remove it, or suggest we take a different path.

If a relationship is like a road trip then for my love relationships I always made sure the car was in good condition. I had a playlist, snacks, the route mapped out, an app to check for alternatives if needed.
I made sure I got a good night sleep, packed for multiple weather conditions, and I arrived in good spirits, and was flexible in what the day would bring and what would be required to let it go smoothly.
I anticipated.

And regardless of how long the trip took, conversation was light and fun. Sometimes a little setback would even give a little kicker, and cracking jokes together would be a bonding experience!
As if we were in competition, who would not get floored by this.

When for my friendships, or at least the ones that proved to be at risk, we just winged it and neither one of us planned anything.
It was not two people bringing their best selves and pulling out all the stops to have a great time.

Any area of life, where you are not bringing your best and most authentic self; 
You are stepping on a road filled with blocks, hurdles and possibly explosives.

When all that time, just next to it;
The lane to being your true self, was completely free.
