  • Legacy | Share Your Work 2025 12 15

    The most difficult part about being a creator is the trail of work it leaves behind. It has been my achilles heel since the 90s where I dropped out of photography academy because I found the bulk of prints and negatives just overwhelming.

    Maybe if we’d spent the first 6 months of training to becoming proper archivists, I would have stayed.
    But I left, and when I picked up my creativity a decade later as a writer, I was aware that one of the big perks was that I didn’t create so much stuff.

    Not realizing that by now, I would not just face three decades of emails, and four decades of paper agendas – which would have grown regardless if I became a writer or not –
    But also countless notebooks, logbooks, workbooks and always several diaries at the same time.
    And none of those materials get full;
    They get abandoned.

    And then there’s the digital legacy of by now thousands of pieces of content, which I have to either bring to print or let them float in cyberspace.
    And more Word files that never saw the light of day.

    Creation is the easy part.
    What to do with it later on, the difficult one.

    And looking at the past for wisdom does not make it easier.

    Nijmegen is the city where the Lymborch Brothers were born, and they became painters of miniatures.
    They quickly made it to the highest levels, working for French nobility, including sharing their table and living at the court.

    Yet their work disappeared, and was not rediscovered until hundreds of years later.
    Stored so safely, it had risked vanishing from the face of the earth.

    The diarist Anais Nin, with whose work I identify most, carried her diaries with her on a transatlantic move, but didn’t publish them until she was in her 60s.
    And her erotica, the other ace up her sleeve, was still in the process of being published when she died.

    Van Gogh’s work did not sell until after his death.
    He never knew his legacy was secure.

    Maybe the common wisdom is there is no way to plan it.
    You have to let go of the legacy, and focus on the art you’re here to create.

    What is the one thing that you know will change your life, if you would commit to doing it every day?

    For seven full years, I followed the same mentor. She had a change of direction, distancing herself from the work she created when I followed her. Yet if anything my connection to that same work has grown even stronger over time.

    It reminds me of my fondness for romantic relationships where there is a borderline insurmountable distance between us.
    I have been a fan from male idols since I was a teen. But in my case, this was not a phase but an early sign of my preferred relationship style;
    Distance will be mandatory.

    And it can be the only element, meaning “we” can have only the distance and not the relationship, as was obviously the case with Jon Bongiovi and Axl Rose, who were my teen idols.
    My love blooms in the space between us.

    So when the mentor created this distance, the space she left behind excited me.
    This was now mine to fill.

    It’s been “years” without her *) -quotation marks since she never left my thoughts and I kept studying her work – but it is not until now that I start to see the logic, the brilliance, the deceptively simple principles that were the rock solid foundation under her work.

    A set of them, although she never said any of these out loud, would be;

    If “it” cannot be NOW?
    If at least some action cannot be done immediately?
    And if it is not something that you will ingrain and carve into your everyday reality, to be with you until the end of your days?

    Then don’t do it.

    In all likeliness, your life currently consists of two things:
    1. The things you wanna do every day.
    AND
    2. The things you resent doing;
    Postpone;
    And then an endless list of shoulds, wants and dreams.

    Only one of those two things is your purpose.
    And it’s not the second.

  • Peace | 2025 12 09 | That ONE Book (start at any page)

    The bonds of our families run deep. We share names, histories, opinions, values.
    Even if we would not know our biological family, we would still share bonds.

    Our blood would bind us forever, even if we grew up in different parts of the world.
    DNA is the unbreakable string.

    We go through hell if we’re born into the wrong families, and we receive the gift of ingrained belonging when we’re lucky.
    We can create chosen families too.

    But there is always a bond, as in a bondage. An unfreedom.
    A shackle (a “bond”), or a price to be paid.
    No relationship, whether work, or with a partner, a friend, a neighbor;
    It cannot be free, by definition.

    And if you want peace I invite you to start bringing more awareness there.
    Ideally, to make a choice of what you are, and are not, willing to pay.
    How is your integrity defined and who do you owe your loyalty?

    What are your must-haves, your non-negotiables;
    What are your goals in life, and the values by which you live?

    Peace starts with knowing yourself, and what you stand for.
    But it ripples out into the world, by you saying No to the events, the people, the communities and the life paths that undermine your peace;
    And, or, would take too much of your resources to defend your peace, compared to what they contribute to your life.

    Peace requires not just knowledge of the self, but also the power and the guts to defend it.
    It requires for you to stand up for yourself, to think independently.
    It has an element of privilege because it requires having your own resources.
    To trust you will rebuild.
    Or, alternatively, to risk losing them.

    The allegiance.
    Peace means to know what side you’re on, because it’s the side you’re always on.

    That ONE Book is the book I always think I own, until I realize it has not been written yet. So in December 2025 I started writing it myself.
    I’m going for writing 365 chapters over the course of 9 years, and then bring it to print.

    There is no shame in monetizing what you create, nor in being commercially savvy in any and all of your skills and talents.

    But your calling is a different one.

    Today, finally, I woke up energized and excited. Because after years of following this creative calling, as described above, I am now in such smooth and easy waters.

    Because I figured out WHY creativity is such a complicated calling.

    The good news is:
    None of it has anything to do with the art itself.
    You being inspired to create something will always be the unpredictable, inefficient, vulnerable process, that demands you to show up will all your attention, and give the best of yourself.

    Like slugs only eating the freshest youngest leaves (and I remember even going as far as eating only the tip of the asparagus, but I think that is myth since asparagus grows underground!);
    In the same way the snail of your creativity will insist on having “only” the tip of the asparagus of your time.

    And you can go feed the stalk to the rest, your creativity really doesn’t care.
    Just don’t bother them with such inferior, your-attention-all-over-the-place-or-in-your-phone-crap.

    Who could blame them.

    However!
    Aside from our creative calling clearly having impossibly high standards, being territorial and ruthlessly pushing the competition out;
    It is all incredibly good news.

    Because those asparagus stalks and full-grown crop your creative snail refuses to eat?
    Provides excellent building blocks to build what you really need.

    Systems.

    This can be a business, a blog, a content planner.
    A sales strategy, a job, a career, a community.

    Your success, growth, and peace of mind are not in the quality of your art.

    They’re in how well you’re able to build a system to deliver value;
    Or on how well you are able to deliver value within already existing systems.

    It’s not just the rule for artists;
    This goes for everybody.

    The first thing that comes to mind is;
    Something is fun, if we’re allowed to engage.
    We often associate fun with being a consumer, in the sense that the entertainment is created by someone else.

    But the more we participate, prepare, anticipate and interact, the bigger the fun.

    The Queen song is a great example of how more engagement (also in your own day-to-day activities) means more fun.

    4. Depth, layers and meaning 05:47
    The more different aspects are used to create the experience, the richer the experience, and also the more fun.
    F.e. a date night where all layers of the experience of going out or having dinner, are attended to by both parties.
    But even a work meeting would be so much better if we created it with intention, care, treats and lighthearted conversation topics.

    Fun in the sense of humor, is often created by a conflict, or contrast, between two layers.
    F.e. what you say is in opposition to the reality, as we can all see it.
    This creates a comic effect.

    Another comic effect from the contrast between layers, is when there is am expectation being a certain way;
    And then providing the opposite!
    So creating a reality or saying something that is the opposite of what was expected.

  • Sacred Solitude | 2025 12 02 | That ONE Book (start at any page)

    For years, and usually in December, I get that itch to reboot my life;
    Get with the program;
    Sit my ass down;
    And finally fully commit to that one book, that I always vow I will one day read properly.

    Not because I want to honor the author or to be in-the-know. Nor to up my credibility as a whatever, No.

    The reason I feel it is so important, is to get my shit together by finally reading this thing cover-to-cover, make it my bible, quote it and to live by it every word, is because I know it will save my life.
    And I’m already on my way to my book shelves before I get smacked over the head with the realization that this book does not exist.

    Sure, I own books that are close to it, but they are not the same thing as “The Book”.
    The Book That Does Not Exist then, apparently.

    It is shocking how this book is so vividly present in my imagination, that I keep “returning to it”.
    Except there is obviously nothing to return to.

    I came to realize this book is in fact mine to write.
    In my mind I have called it “The” One Book, referring to that it should be the only one you need.
    And I’ve called it “That” One Book, in the brief moments I assumed it was already written by someone else, and all I needed to do was get to the shelves and fetch it.

    My dream for this book was that its chapters should be short and with a clear title.
    Reading it should be more about the dedicated routine of reading itself, than about the content.

    May every chapter represent 5 minutes of your life, spent in sacred solitude.

    Maybe you will light a candle or keep a journal on hand. But there won’t be any questions or assignments.

    This book should be filled with chapters that bring closure.
    And offer peace.

  • Suddenly all the stories were about Sinterklaas | Share Your Work 2025 12 01

    “Even if I was invited, I would decline.”

    There was one friend who understood the kind of investment Sinterklaas in my family, actually entailed.
    And that it wasn’t for the faint at heart.

    The celebrations have been passed on to the next generation, and I am no longer included.
    I used to wonder why I didn’t miss it, since it had been the highlight of my year.

    But before I elaborate it’s probably a good idea to explain the Dutch tradition of Sinterklaas.

    Sinterklaas is pretty much just like Christmas celebrations, where children get their presents straight from The Man Himself.
    But here it’s 5 December, instead of the 25th.

    And Dutch children get rhymes with their presents, and “surprises’ which is hand-crafted themed-packaging.

    F.e. if you get tickets to a soccer match, you may get a “surprise” in the form of an old soccer ball, and the tickets are hid inside.

    However, it is not just a Children’s fest as many adult friend groups or extended families can also have a Sinterklaas party.
    They buy presents for each other, make rhymes and surprises too.

    And in the case of highly competitive adults all bidding against one another who has made Sint the best rhymes and has come up with the funniest verses;
    This is when Sinterklaas-night can become the artistic highlight of the year.
    And in our case, it did.

    The work you put in was just as rewarding as the night itself.

    Every year I made somewhere between 20 and 30 presents, beautifully wrapped and all with a rhyme.
    And every year I had no idea how I would get it done.
    It was a lot!
    But it was so incredibly rewarding.

    Yet, I never missed it once it stopped. By then, my creative energy had already found its way into my writing.
    52 weeks a year.

    This year I even started with a content calendar, which is a production schedule.
    By now I create 5 pieces of content per week, for different accounts.

    It’s like creating 5 different gifts, and I always fear I started too late and it won’t get done.
    But it always does.

    As if Sinterklaas still gives it a blessing.

    Many days you will have a discipline, a routine of familiar practices to predictable outcomes.

    But the true work, is showing up for whatever happens that day.

    Every time I am certain I’ve now thought enough about my peculiar life choices, that I’ve recalibrated yet again and yes still stand by what must seem  like odd choices, at surface level at least;
    I get sucked into a new cycle.

    Making just one small course correct!
    Just a little something I found on the internet!
    And that makes so much sense and will just increase the impact of whatever it is I am doing, bring what I desire, or that will solve that aching problem;
    I end up in failure and frustration, yet again.
    And sit down thinking it over.

    Without exception, I notice it was all already exactly as it should be.
    That the problem was not in me choosing the wrong interventions;
    It was in me still being susceptible for solutions or tempting upgrades to begin with.

    But the work that needs to be done will flow through you!
    And if it doesn’t, then it’s not yours.
    It will get done by forces bigger than us, or, alternatively, it doesn’t need to get done at all.
    Maybe it was merely a projection of some outdated belief about being good or being responsible.

    You know what is responsible?
    Acting on your calling.
    Which means doing the work that arrives at your doorstep, or in your thoughts, again and again.

    But after that?
    No longer your problem.

    Maybe you feel CALLED to promote your work, or to find a place where you will be paid for it.
    Then go ahead!
    It’s part of the calling.

    Maybe you feel called to save your work, curate it, publish it.
    Great!
    Clearly part of your calling.
    You could feel CALLED to save someone else’s legacy and publish that.

    But as a rule?
    What happens to your work, is not your work.

    Thank God.

    Big disclaimer here that I don’t even know what the official definition is. And the rule of this series is I’m not supposed to prepare these videos!
    But regardless, I think it will be a very interesting video.

    2. Social Conditioning 00:57
    Warning that I think very negatively about this concept, but the way I see it, is that Social Conditioning is basically a web of lies, worked into your unconscious psyche
    😱
    Like software that is programmed there (in your own head) that you don’t know exists
    🤓
    And that shouldn’t be there, if you want to live a life of meaning.

    We may agree with the underlying social idea of them, such as the concept of non-violence, but because they’re executed so poorly, they provide inconsistent outcomes at best.
    And enable inequality and repression, at worst.

    2. Social Conditioning for Women 05:25
    Not mentioned in this video, but for men it’s things like having to repress their emotions, being a provider, not being allowed to be sensitive.

    Also not in the video, but in general, you can say Social Conditioning robs women of their power and men of their humanity.

    3. The Matrix 05:50
    This movie where the people do not know they are living inside a simulation, is a good movie to imagine how we too, are living in this matrix of social conditioning.
    Not realizing, it’s not the real world.

    4. The Big Evil of Our Time? 06:47
    Well, in a way….
    Social Conditioning would have been The Big Evil of Our Time, had it not been around for thousands of years.
    Probably since the agricultural revolution.

    5. Experiment 07:27
    If you encounter shame in yourself, fear, or other sudden negative emotions, it’s a good habit to track this.
    Is this you, or is this your Social Conditioning talking?

    What rises and what falls.
    What waxes, what wanes.

    The older I get the more I realize:
    “We don’t build anything. Don’t actually create anything either. Not really.
    It is already done.”

    There is a driving force beneath it, that we can feel and make the most of, or we can ignore it and try to make something with our own bare hands 100 meters to the right of it.
    Achieving of course, nothing.

    Because the foundation, the groundwork, was never supposed to be done by us.
    It was already woven into the fabric of our existence, and we were only meant to pick it up from the thresholds of our dimension, and bring it into our world.

    And this exceeds professional and creative endeavors;
    It is in everything.
    Or, alternatively, it isn’t.
    And then it will never fly, never really be done, and fall apart the moment you take your eyes off of it.

    I believe – and you might fiercely disagree with me on this!- that all the work is done in the other dimension. Our own influence is incredibly limited.
    Which can be both a good, as well as a bad thing.

    It’s good news, if we’re drowning in destructive emotions like hate (including self-hate), shame, despair and terror.
    It would take some force from a dimension we do not understand, to manifest anything irreversible there.
    You not being the main creator of your reality, could be the very thing that saves your ass here.

    But the alternative is also true;
    If we really, really want something, and no matter how we come at it, reality just won’t budge?
    Oh that sucks.
    A lot.

    It can pay off to look for movement in this fabric of our reality.
    Where does it vibrate with expectation?
    Where does it stretch and expand, as if something is coming into existence?

    Where, does it call your name.

    ABOUT THE LOST POST SERIES

    I have been consistently posting “What Do Rock Stars Need To Hear Today” for a while now.
    Starting June 2023, they found their final form as blogposts here on the Catacombe blog, pretty quickly.

    But I’ve always been aware there were singular posts/ borderline poetry, still on social media, floating somewhere down my timeline.

    Some at the beginning when I did not know what this series would be.
    Some around the time in October/November 2023, when I lost access to this site.
    And then a few in between.

    And in addition to that there are the ones I did post on the blog, but whose stories revolve around things I no longer offer.
    I will retrieve those too;
    And give them a new story, that has the timeless quality they deserve.
