You know something is off before anybody else does.
If you’re underachieving, when you’re on the wrong path, or whether diabolical powers are leading you astray.Do not wait for others to affirm your reality.
Get it fixed.
—For the past couple of weeks, I have had a big shift happening in my personal life, that really hooked into my identity.
It was tied to who I thought I was, what my mission was, my priorities.
It was the most tangible accomplishment I had from a mission I had set out on at Ash Wednesday 2007.
So that’s a long time.And it was tempting to fall into thoughts of that it had all been for nothing, led to nothing, and other fatalistic conclusions about how I had chosen spent my life these past 17 years.
The other big thing that shook me this month, was also rooted in an event in the past.
In 2013-ish I sought help for something medical, which I dropped the moment I realized how much stress the exam was going to give me.
Only to pick it up this month, after years of having been sent away with complaints that in hindsight, were related to 2013.
They were never separate, superficial, normal things, due to aging.Over the course of years, similarly to 2013, these new things had been treated both by me as well as the professionals, as things that had a binary cause of A. something life-threatening where time was of the greatest import, or B. something completely innocent that was totally normal for my age.
And we usually went for B.
Or after a brief exam for A, then B.When in fact it was C:
Something slow moving or even stable, and that I failed to get diagnosed in 2013 because I bailed out.C: Something in all probability benign (since it’s obviously slow moving) yet that can and is, still very much affecting me partially because I/we didn’t know what to lookout for.
We didn’t know what to expect.Maybe in 2013, it could even have been treated and I could have been cured.
So, what do these two seemingly unrelated things, of my 2007 quest and the “result” going up in thin air, and a medical exam I called off in 2013 and the consequences I have suffered because of it, have to do with each other?
They both revolve around a sense of normalcy and internalization.
Because the truth was, this quest of mine on Ash Wednesday 2007?
It was done the moment I decided to undertake it.
The identity-defining aspect to myself I occasionally panic about that I lost it?
That was never the identity-defining part at all, nor was it the result of a quest gone right.By undertaking the quest, my sense of normal had changed, my sense of who I was had changed.
That cannot be acquired by external things happening, nor can it be taken away.The medical advice I sought in 2013 did not have such a moment where I owned both what MY NORMAL had been, until 2013;
Nor did I OWN the knowledge something was off.Although I was an active participant in the quest, and felt more a passive and not particularly compelled consumer with regard to the medical path, the result was the same;
I was looking for outward validation for something that was an internally felt thing.The quest was never meant to lead to HAVING certain viable things or results;
It was about BEING a totally different person.The medical journey should never have been about GAINING certain viable things or results;
It should have been an acknowledgement that something was completely off and NOT NORMAL, for me!
I had changed.
The shock I was in, resulting in a rushed jump onto the medical treadmill, was set out to see if something medically threatening was wrong with me, when I was aiming on getting my old self back, my sense of normal.Other people’s opinion or interest, or any form of external and material validation (or lack thereof) are not a part of who we are.
This means two things.Only you know when you are NOT, on your path, NOT living your normal;
Only you know when things have shifted for the worse.
From 2013 and up, I should have owned that the string of things I sought medical attention for was absolutely not normal FOR ME, and should have dismissed all reassurance that it was normal or fine.But it also means that once you are ON path, like the one I stepped on in 2007;
It’s done.
There is nothing more to say or to do.This, is now your new normal.
Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

It was gonna say “lay the smallest visible brick” until I realized that this suggested the foundational structure would end up missing!
In whatever it is we are building.But do you know what the smallest visible bricks build?
Relationships.That’s your structure right there.

If there was one business lesson I could tell my younger self, it’s that a sustainable business is relational, not transactional.
It’s not: You buy something from me, and in exchange you give me money.It’s also not: We have a relationship because you buy from me.
It’s:
We have a relationship, and there are times when we choose to fill that in with you buying something from me.And personally, the more sale-sey the post, the more I like reading it from someone else.
It excites me, to see or read someone being enthusiastic about what it is they sell.
And I also like reading their stories, providing there is a call-to-action at the end of how I can work with them.Unpopular opinion, I know.
But it is why you will never see me writing a blogpost, without a what I sell at the bottom.So!
When I say “lay the smallest brick”, which means to build a little bit on your business or career, I do not mean invisible things such as writing something in your notebook, or doing anything invisible or behind the scenes.
I also do not mean approaching one potential client.

Once you know your fate is to be big, all the places where you have been making yourself smaller in order to fit in and not rock the boat;
They either get to go.Or get the life-sized you.

I am writing this story after a few days of hesitating. Unsure when I am ready to reveal the deeper truths, not just here, but also in my yoga work.
And I guess the truth is, you’re never ready. There isn’t a moment when your story is finished, your explanations solid, and you can coach people through their emotions of grappling with the uncomfortable truth that the You they loved, was not the fullest, realest you.
Or was no longer the real you – maybe you were hiding a change.
As a Rock Star, what matters to you MOST, your deepest values, your core motivations, the one thing you cannot NOT do, and yes, in all probability even your biggest pain;
THAT SHOULD ALL BE VISIBLE AND IN THE LEAD!!!So.
If for a long time, you have felt stagnated and are even regressing backwards in your development;
If things you could do, you can no longer do;
And ambitions you used to have seem further away than ever?Then look at the places you’re playing small.
You are either small OR you’re a big larger than life badass motherfucker who takes full responsibility for their presence, life, and everyone in it.
The middle road is costing you.

See anything on your agenda that requires proper preparation, 8 hours sleep, ideal weather conditions or the perfect planetary alignments for what it is;
A mistake.—
Over the past couple of years I’ve start-stopped several YouTube series, on both my international YouTube YouTube, as well as my Dutch YouTube. But I’ve also done that blogging, and for doing my posting on Social Media.
Start-stopped.
I’m experiencing yet another cull and clean cycle for my Dutch work, and although I’m getting better at it, I am certain that I will make the mistake of committing to projects in the future, which will dry up and need to be stopped (could be silently) because I am just not feeling it anymore.This round of throwing out creative projects, is in all probability not the final time I need to do this.
Yet the reason is always the same:
It’s stuff I need to prepare.Whether it’s listening to Bon Jovi concerts before I can blog about it or make a video review about them;
Whether it’s investigating an 80s topic before I can make a video about it (my final one was 10 hours of preparation; I aborted this series immediately after realizing how out of hand this had gotten);
Even vacuuming the rug to shoot a yoga video, setting up the lights and finding my schedules, and getting dressed and makeup done, takes about an hour.
But this final one is an exception-
That’s preparation in order to be able to do your unprepared work!
Which is allowed, sometimes it can’t be helped.But the work itself should flow out of you.
Not just because your best work is the internalized work;
Not just because preparation is a waste of time and makes the outcome unpredictable;
But because the work that flows out of you gives you energy, and preparation costs you energy.That’s how you recognize the difference;
If you, out of your own accord, already start doing what others might call “preparation”, then that is your actual work.
Your zone of genius.
Even though someone else might do that to prepare something.In my case, I can write every time of the day, and night, and my biggest challenge is to NOT write, to avoid over stimulation of my brain and too many hours behind the computer.
I’ve capped it to 5 computer hours a day;
And not getting anything done this first week!But I can tell you one thing:
It has worked miracles to never ever waste those precious computer (flow!) hours on preparation, ever again..

men and women are (on) different (budgets)Men need to budget their commitments, and minimize them to only those serving their goals and reflecting their values.
Women need to budget flexibility and uncertainty;
And prioritize finding an exit strategy to the situations that leave them no choice.—
It has been the elephant in the room, or in our case on stage, because Yes;
The concept of striving for Rock Star success is a male one.Now – perhaps “unfortunately” I might say, but more about that later – this does not mean that women should rule out becoming a Rock Star, deliberately aiming to stand out in their industry, so that they can charge not just the highest rates, but are invited to tables no peer ever got invited to.
Even though the others would show up there for free.Never ever forget that since ancient Greek times, the labor of women and slaves was not included in the economic system.
Work that to this day is still invisible, underpaid and the actual elephant in the room of our economic system.
And a way bigger elephant than our question;
“Do women make good Rock Stars?”For over two-thousand years the economic system has been built directly upon the qualities of men.
Much like all medicine that is still tested only to men, this is means that as a woman you need to be mindful.
You can’t trust medicine nor career choices, to be a good one, just because it gave good results for men.I am definitely not the right yoga teacher to talk about the physiology of this, many of my colleagues are, but the bottom line is women’s nervous systems pay an incredibly high price, when it is exposed to stress.
Yes, even for them:
The warrior, fighter, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, is true!
As far as I can tell.
But in all probability, you’re paying a way higher price than any man would.Worst case scenario, the way I see it- although that is perhaps too grim!- is that where stress and challenge and even war, could rise a man into the highest version of himself;
For women the effect is what in Lord of the Rings was done to elves, who were tortured until their entire species was turned into trolls.To avoid this, take a look at the Elven Queen Galadriel:
She lives in the heavily guarded woods of Lothlórien.
No one enters, without her permission.She can focus on the endgame of defeating Sauron, by blocking out all other distractions, by design.
On the other hand, the men of the story, the fellowship of the nine, are all focused on the same goal, but they are doing their work on the road, location free.
The only one who continuously thinks about how he can fight this war from home and keep his people safe, is Boromir of Gondor, who makes the wrong decision of trying to take the ring from Frodo, in order to use it from within the walls of the city.The other eight men accept the hardship of their path, without home or proper shelter, and all grow more powerful and wise, enduring and conquering all peril that awaits them.
I made the choice at the time to let Catacombe be about awakening your Rock Star powers, and yes, I chose to almost exclusively target the male path here.
The one taking on the madness and the mayhem and the pressure, and galvanizing it into your biggest dreams.This is because of that 2000 year old structure of favoring this approach. It doesn’t change the system itself, it works it. Teaches you how to play it, even.
But within that “game”, men and women, and feel free to be more gender neutral here and use which one of those roles resonate with you-
but we have different decisions to make.
We pay a different price;
For women in this system our actions have different consequences for our nervous systems.
We should be more risk-averse than men, and guard the boundaries of our kingdom like hawks, because we pay a way higher price enduring stress.
Worst case scenario it turns us into orcs, with all that made us human now lost.The Elves are always on the brink of “leaving these shores” as they put it, referring to their people, all of them, leaving for the Undying Lands.
It is not a matter of if they leave, but when.
Middle-Earth is not made for them, anymore than our world of men is made for us.The men in Lord of the Rings illustrate that they need to guard their commitments carefully.
Even their loyalty to the Fellowship, ultimately proves to be untenable. There can be only one loyalty, one priority, and these all proved to be highly personal.
Only Frodo’s priority was to get the ring into the fires of Mount Doom.
His friend Sam’s was simply to be at Frodo’s side.
Aragorn’s priority was to do what was necessary to protect his people, mankind.All men had only one commitment, and that is what gave them the strength to face all hardship along their path.
So may you find yours, Rock Star of the Earth.
All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.

Rock Star Identity Work { version 1: explained with teapots }
Depending on how you look at it, this very first post-to-be-turned-into-page-someday, about “Rock Star Identity Work” is either:
– premature
Since the best analogy I have come up with, the first way to explain the method that makes it more tangible less abstract, is an analogy about about tea and a teapot.
Which is way too uncool to sell something with the word Rock Star in it
-or obsolete
Because I never started with this theoretic concept, but this concept describes best what I DO. And what I think other methods do not do. So the theory behind it (Rock Star Identity Work) has been created as a label for something I have been doing instinctively and have recognized as my truth, since the 20th century.So if you can get past these objections let me explain what Rock Star Identity Work is, and why it is the basis of the yoga workshops, as well as all the mentoring at Catacombe, and in particular of the 3 hour session “The Rock Star” which I always highlight at the bottom of every post.
Rock Star Identity Work means that instead of looking for guidance or change in what it is you do, or want to be doing (compare it to the idea of “doing what you love”, “follow your heart”, “do the work you’re passionate about”), you start with WHO you need to be, to let that work be of service.
Your passion can be baking bread, but in order for that to make a living, you have to embody/ be, someone who can serve bread.
You have to be a teapot, not keep fussing over the tea.The tea will be there. You love making tea, you can’t NOT make tea, and not a day goes by without you watching TikTok videos about the most exotic teas, about tea competitions, watch what other tea connaisseurs are doing, and so on.
The tea stuff, the bread baking stuff, the you making music stuff, or the me teaching yoga stuff;
That is not where the problem lies, my friends.
Nor the opportunities, which is even more relevant.
Let the tea take care of itself, you will never be a day without it, we know that.But the teapot on the other hand? Oh, that is where the problems are!
Because we have to find/ embody, a teapot that is not just big enough and with the right characteristics to hold, keep warm, and serve the tea;
The tea pot also has to be appealing to the ones we’re serving the tea to.
And people change, tastes change. Both us as well as our clients can change, so maybe we start being crackly teapots, spilling the tea. Or maybe our type of teapot goes out of fashion.
The chances that our teapot, representing the way we offer tea (our art, our services, our products), is no longer en vogue are higher than the chance of the actual beverage in the teapot no longer being in fashion.
Rock Star Identity Work means in an abstract sense, that you first adopt or step into your Rock Star persona, and THEN, you align your business and art, and everything you do accordingly.
In the analogy of the teapot, it means you first focus on what type of teapot you really feel at home at being.
What container would you like to be?
A container that holds a beverage for thousands of thirsty runners?

Most industries only have ONE type of teapot. So in yoga it’s group classes, meaning that all yoga teachers are almost conditioned to share their work in that way.
When a lot of yoga teachers would probably make way better teapots for private classes or teaching for organizations, or even better teapots to be Rock Stars who teach entire stadiums.
Yet teaching yoga classes for your local community was the only type of yoga teacher teapot any of us ever saw.
Even though, with regard to different yoga lineages, teacher trainings and yoga philosophies (how it should be taught) a multitude of different approaches existed.
There was diversity in the tea, but all teapots were expected to be the same: teapots that teach group classes in local communities.Everything up until now, goes for any aspect of life; parenting, sporting, diets, your finances.
You need to resist focusing on the what or the how (the tea) and step into the identity, of the person who rocks that area of life, in the way you think it should be done.
And then the how, the what, will naturally flow from there.But: If you want to be the actual Rock Star?!
Different rules apply!
Or not different rules, but then you have basically already decided on a set of values and principles.Rock Stars embody freedom, Rock Stars are comfortable with big audiences, Rock Stars are confident!
So if you know, if you feel, that unless things get to that level?
You will feel constricted, small, stifled, inadequate.
Then you have your answer.You need to be a Rock Star teapot.
A big bold teapot that can serve whatever the hell they please, and yet it will have people eager, to buy whatever it is they serve next.

As you may or may not know, I am a writer.
The “I am” can also come before a lot of professions, such as:
I am a yoga teacher.
I am an entrepreneur.
I am a mentor.
And all would be true.But there are two reasons why “I am a writer” will always be more true than others.
One is because I will always write. It is unimaginable that I would stop it. Or it IS imaginable!
In theory it would be wise, desirable, practical and very, very welcome, if only it were possible, to stop writing…
Because I can’t, even if my life depended on it.
Which it might, because writing is causing a terrible strain. I know it is by far my most unhealthy habit. Which is why for me it is important to keep the rest of my life (as far as there is a rest!) as stress-free as I can, and do all within my might to get my lifestyle as healthy as possible.
I’m 51 and I’m still struggling, yet I know that if I don’t succeed, if I don’t find a way to somehow moderate and regulate my writing habits, it will cost me two decades of my life if not more.Yet still, I cannot stop.
The second reason “I am a writer” holds more truth, is that even if I’m sick, sleep-deprived, broken-hearted, or all of the above, not only can I still write;
It actually gets better.What’s the thing you will do until your dying breath?

don’t change the show, change your audience
You know whom you’re here to serve.
The ones excited by their good fortune to be walking this earth in the same tiny interval of human life you are.
Which is exactly how you feel about them.

The title of today’s post is probably widespread wisdom, but I did not encounter it until I started studying small business marketing.
It must have been around 2012-ish.I don’t know the exact date, because it wasn’t a conscious choice to start studying marketing, as opposed to my academic business studies, in the early 90s.
If you pick up studying a topic on internet, no starting dates are saved usually!
Nor do we know it will end up being THE topic! Or one of multiple, you will end up loving the most.But I do know that the moment a business coach I followed (I think it was Marie Forleo) shared this wisdom:
“Don’t change the show, change your audience.”
It clicked.It meant don’t change what you sell, change the people you sell it to.
There was something mesmerizing, about this idea of taking the bird’s view perspective of someone filling stadiums (which is my association with your “show”) and applying it to your small business.
It was a shift in perspective that not just gave you more confidence, and planted you firmly into your bigger entrepreneurial boots;
It was also an important time-saving, frustration-preventing, highest-work invoking guideline, for both the entrepreneur, or artist;
As well as for their ideal customer or fan!!So do your work like people are defying waiting lines and dynamic pricing systems, to get hold of your services.
And give them what they came for;

A. Commit to a schedule, a process, a routine, a path you will stick to and be hellbent to go back to!
Or
B. Welcome all rejection, resistance and adversity.
And overcome.—
About every four, five months, I cull my notebooks AND archive them.
I am in favor of keeping anything that allows you to track your development, and is a document of your personal history.Cd collections which stopped growing around 2010;
A paper diary archive that has its own litters;
Heavy envelopes with letters, from when you lived abroad;
Holiday scrapbooks.However, next to keeping consistent cover to cover diaries (or logs), which are indeed filed the moment they are full;
I also start, ink, scribble, use and then ghost notebooks with a vigor that easily allows for six, seven notebooks to be in use at once.Until, at number 9, 10 or 15, I am like:
“That’s it! I’m cutting it to ONE!”
I never cut it to one but I do cull drastically.And after such a pages cut-out and rebinding operation (I have a stationary collection that would be able to keep a 90s printing room running for a week) there is a deep satisfaction that the job is done.
All notes stored in their right chronological order.
Yet always that same question:WHY did I write all this down?!
WHY was I so much in my head?
WHY was I bullet journaling and micro-managing my life, when in reality I do not have the personality to enforce productivity improvements nor to remember any of the profound insights.So for all you avid planners yet never-follow-uppers:

your game plan does not require the other to show upYou know your goal and your preferred way of getting there, spending as little resources as possible and picking up bonus points.
You have a plan B and you know the maximum you can afford to spend.But what if others do not show up, to bargain?

My year did not exactly end the way I had hoped.
And even took a picture (definitely without any intention of ever sharing it publicly 😅) of my teary eyed snotty nosed, crying face, to remind myself how hard this thing had hit me.Until the real message dropped in, of course:
My 2023 game plan had had holes the size of medium-sized trucks!And I had, well, not so much refused to address them, because I had;
But my follow-up strategy when the opposing party did not show up to figure this out, had been absolutely non-existent…I had fallen into the trap which has taken out some of the most talented and most promising players in very early stages of the game (and swallowed them whole) which is:
To count on the other player showing up to play.To actually have a head full of brilliant strategies all mapped out for different occasions, and to then, when the other just isn’t there-
go blank.Wait a little while longer.
Hear half-assed excuses a five year old could debunk, and still you’re not responding.
Head spinning with all the things you were going to say, but that are now nothing more but dead weight.
Pulling you down even further.Trust me, for 2024?
If you’re a good player, and you know your goal?
Then you’ve GOT the big stuff!
And you’ve GOT the small stuff!
You CAN anticipate, shift, and adjust quicker than lightning, responding to whatever comes your way!So for this year, make plans only for this;
