    it was never under your command

    You decide what you do with the endless stream of ideas, the urges and the hunches, the inspiration and the passion.

    Once picked up, some of them will stay with you for life. Others will leave. Sometimes without you noticing.

    “You have the right to work, but for the work’s sake only. You have no right to the fruits of work.”

    and

    “Work done with anxiety about results is far inferior to work done without such anxiety, in the calm of self-surrender.”

    Both from the Bhagavad Gita. (source)

    And there is something about not being lazy in there too, but for now I’m just gonna go with the assumption that like your average prolific, poorly understood Rock Star, your art has the potential to devour you if left unexpressed.
    That for you, the option of developing a Netflix addiction is not on the table.
    Nor under the table, or within a five mile radius of it.

    I’m going to label it a case of eating or being eaten, but between you and your art.
    So in a very metaphorical, close to biblical Hero-journey kind of way, where every time The Call comes you roll your eyes thinking:

    “Oh no! Not again! Please tell me, this one is not for me. I haven’t even gotten my head around the last one!”

    But what if you would release any idea of you having to actually do, shape or manage it?
    That even your skill and experience are not meant to be what you are relying on right now.
    That it wants you in your purest, most receptive state. Not like a vessel, but like a doorway.
    A gate from the world of ideas into reality.

    In the four years I took my training as a yoga teacher, and a couple of years after when I was still very much living in the yoga world, the world of Ayurveda and of the Bhagavad Gita where the quote is from;
    I encountered a strange but beautiful story, multiple times, every time from a different source, about the souls of unborn children.
    That they pick you, before you are pregnant.

    And that the Wise, who are initiated in this knowledge, can see the soul in your presence before you are pregnant.
    They know that you will soon be.

    So welcome every new idea, but do not name it yet nor get attached to its presence.
    There is still a long way to go before it is manifested in a recognizable form and even longer before it grows into maturity.

    But just like children, our ideas need us as facilitators and as stewards, using skills on the fly we didn’t even know we had.
    They need us to be a strong gateway or lay the path for them into the world.

    Whether it’s a business idea, a creative idea, an abstract concept;
    Whether it’s an activity you’d like to pick up, a country you’re curious about, or an event you think should be organized;

    Let the idea come through, and guide it into this world.

    We do not know if this is their moment to be manifested in true form, nor do we know how long they will stay on this earth.

    And it is not our job to know, either.

  • give yourself full expansion | What Do Rock Stars Need To Hear Today 2023 09 12

    give yourself full expansion

    You were given the size you were meant to have, to bring what you came here to bring.

    To cut, limit, to apologize for who you are and even to soften rough edges;
    It is to risk your entire legacy.

    A mouse is small, an elephant big and a whale is even bigger. All beings have exactly the size they are meant to have.
    And we humans too are all born having certain talents and a personality, all of them developing over time. Until some of us reach a stage where Normal is no longer covering it.

    When you are beginning to stand out like a dormouse between the house mice;
    An African elephant between Asian ones;
    Or a blue whale between the humpbacks.

    And regardless if you are sensitive to this animal analogy or not, your job will be to accept this as an unchangeable reality, that will express itself at various moments throughout your life.
    And almost exclusively;
    In the most inconvenient and unfavorable of ways!

    But your being different, your inability to commit to the simplest of tasks, to show up for the smallest things or your sensitivity to the horrendous mundaneness of the daily grind?
    Well?
    Could it be because perhaps you were born for bigger and bolder things?

    That maybe, your expansion lies somewhere else, where all the little things will fall away, or in place, or maybe they go nowhere at all, yet they will lose their relevance.

    Move into full expansion of your Blue whale-ness, your African elephant-ness, your dormouse-ness and your Rock Star-ness.

    That, is YOUR commitment!

  • there is no mistaking if you are called | What Do Rock Stars Need To Hear Today 2023 09 06

    there is no mistaking if you are called

    If you can do something else, and find it joyful and fulfilling;
    You are not.

    Let me rephrase:
    If you can do something else.

    “Write like you’re a goddamn death row inmate and the governor is out of the country and there’s no chance for a pardon. Write like you’re clinging to the edge of a cliff, white knuckles, on your last breath, and you’ve got just one last thing to say”
    Alan W. Watts

    There is more than one writer who holds the belief that writing should have a sense of urgency to it.
    That there is no point in doing it, because you want to BECOME, a writer.

    You either are or you aren’t.

    And what better time to be reminded of that urgency you should feel before getting out there, than today?
    When in our modern world even the bakery around the corner uses social media to get their message out. And that’s a business we all support and feel the human(ity) behind it.
    It is certainly preferable to having our minds and wallets hacked by AI generated products and commercials.

    In today’s landscape, it is so easy to feel shame around supporting your (your!) art and/or your heartfelt business by getting your message out.
    It sure as hell requires some balls to be visible as WHO you are and WHAT you are, without hiding behind whatever!

    And yet, I am not here to help you to dip your toes in, nor to coach you through the treacherous waters of social media and into the safety of a Patreon account.
    I am here to say;
    Then you are not called.

    And wow, wouldn’t any of us called ones be very happy to trade places with you!
    I know I would.
    Oh! The wonderfully neutral yoga- or coaching business I could build.
    The soft and gentle life, revolving about self-care and small adventures I could have!!

    🤗

    And I bet Alan Wilson Watts would love to trade places with a non-called one too:

    “Take a deep breath and tell us your deepest, darkest secret, so we can wipe our brow and know that we’re not alone.
    Write like you have a message from the king. Or don’t.
    Who knows, maybe you’re one of the lucky ones who doesn’t have to.”

    ― Alan Wilson Watts

    So when you know, you know.

    Either you have options to get your message out or you do not.

    When your message tries to cut itself a way out of your heart every time you deny it, and your only choice is between letting it out – where fear of the external consequences to being visible is the least of your worries compared to the turmoil going on inside! –
    or getting drugs strong enough to shut the shrieking inner voice down.

    The good news is that if you are called, unlike others “in today’s world”;
    You no doubt have what it takes to take that message where it belongs!

    Out there.
    On a stage.
    The biggest one you can find without being thrown in jail.

    And even then, you’ll at least consider it.

    What is it, you really want to say?

  • it is time to burn what you know | What Do Rock Stars Need To Hear Today 2023 09 04

    it is time to burn what you know

    Where you are going no one can help you, not even you.
    Let go.

    Today was quite possibly the most important day of the year, if not the last two decades.
    Finally, the last revelations came and a new truth was revealed.

    The truth I saw was incredibly potent, heartwarming and to be honest there was an intellectual, ego-driven part in me that wanted to write this down!
    This- which proved I had been right all along.

    About male and female energy.
    About yoga.
    About mentoring.
    About the world.
    Capitalism, financial success, and the blueprints leading there.

    If I would write this down, I would not only have an explanation for my own past 25 years;
    But for every problem I could ever encounter and in all probability-
    what anybody else would encounter.

    If I could just give that brain of mine one extra squeeze!!
    Pen in hand, this time.

    Until it hit me- no.

    I was going to say no to this.

    I was going to soak up this moment of all-knowing, this perfection of insight and then I was going to do the literally unthinkable;
    Let it all go.

    Because although this work of analyzing into the deepest depths, has made today the most profound day I ever recall having;
    It has had its purpose.

    Knowledge, whether from others or our own, is not meant to be held on to. Not by us, the artists and creators of this world.

    Your unfinished projects, your unfulfilled promises, your unpublished works, and your unsold art;
    Your finished projects, your fulfilled promises, your published work and your sold art;

    Let go.

    Your work is now.

  • You were called Star for a reason, Rock Star | 2023 08 10

    It is currently the most popular movie in cinemas around the world, and it is about a doll living in her own perfect world.
    She sees herself forced leave it, to correct things in the real world.
    Things that were interfering with what she saw as her perfect life.

    Close to the end of the movie, you will see Barbie realizing she is not a real person but an idea.
    Which is why she has eternal life, infinite endings and infinite possibilities.

    “While humans have only one ending,” she is informed by someone who wants her to stay grounded, in a moment where Barbie gives her imagination free rein in all she could do and be as a human.

    What stood out most for me, out of all the reasons Barbie said had her leaning towards wanting a real life, was when she said she wanted to be the creator.
    Not the created.

    Barbie wanted to create, and she knew that in order to do that, she would have to leave Barbieland.
    And for good this time, not just to repair a rip in the curtain between the two worlds.

    But the human world is also the world of having a limited life span, and seemingly unlimited emotions, chaos and change.
    Something that is also pointed out to her.

    And in this metaphor I pondered a bit, over where Rock Stars fit in.

    Are we living in an “idea”-lized world, by the grace of those who believe in us and project their dreams and desires onto us?
    In whatever profession we may be rocking, because we’re not all musicians.
    The answer is:
    Yes.
    There is definitely a part of us, and it may not be as small, humble, and altruistic as we would like it to be, that only comes to life the moment others “use” us, to step into their highest power.
    Like girls use the Doctor-Barbie or Pilot Barbie to step into their power.

    But having said that, are we not also the creators of our own universe?
    Unlike Barbie, are we not both the Mattel of our Rock Star Life, as well as the Barbie who then plays in it?
    Undoubtedly;
    Yes.
    At least we are, if all goes well.

    And if it doesn’t, if our autonomy and our creator-ship is not included in the deal, we end up like anyone famous and rich who doesn’t have agency over their own work;
    Drugging ourselves one way or the other.
    It can even have the form of working really hard, and fully identifying us with the very identity that took our true selves away.
    Simply because we do not have a life left, to return to.

    A Rock Star is someone who gambles big, on being their most autonomous self, and allowing their message of freedom to fully express;
    But whom in doing so runs the same risk as Barbie does, which is to be run by corporations and by people who project not just their biggest dreams but also their frustrations, onto you.

    Barbie does not just understand the power of being a creator;
    She also understands that she does not have any say in whether people project their biggest dreams or their biggest frustrations onto her.

    All Barbies in Barbieland are just one rough play session away from being turned into “weird Barbie” with cut hair and marker all over her face.

    Rock Stars, like all inspirators and influencers and anyone visible in the media, must learn to navigate the forces that come at us, when things get rough.
    And here is a truth the movie does not even get close to addressing;
    None of us can go out and repair every rip in the curtain, nor can we really do something about incidents where people projecting their frustrations onto us, any more than Weird Barbie could.
    “It’s okay I own it,” Weird Barbie says, when President Barbie apologizes for having called her Weird Barbie.

    Owning it, is largely all we can do if things between us and those loving our work, and rooting for us, have gone wrong.
    And ditto when things between us and those hating us and wanting to see us fail, have escalated.

    Rock Stars are in many ways just as vulnerable as a Barbie doll.
    And we do not even have a safe Barbieland/ Rock Star land to give us a moment’s rest and believe we can live “the best day of our lives every day”.
    In a physical sense we are in the real world 24/7, without roller blading, taking the snow scooter, a camper van, a rocket and a pink Cadillac to take us to another dimension.

    We live in the here and the now, and yet I am here to tell you;
    No, you don’t.

    And the reason you are unlike many if not most of the people you know;
    Not even the same as those you may call peers;
    Is because you know you are also, partially, idea

    You know that before you became who you are, you created yourself in your mind. The “You” people think is you, was the you that was created by you.
    Just like everything that was created by you, and that will be created by you, was created first in your head, with an idea.

    And that is why not only would it be impossible to talk things through and concern yourself with, anyone having issues with you;
    Not only would it feel like your soul was sucked right out of you, if you tried to explain yourself, make amends, try to level and be nice in order to be liked and the peace returning to your real-life world;
    But it is also NOT where you are meant to be.

    It is against God, if you ask me.

    So if your once tiptoed feet are suddenly flat on the ground, put on some leather boots.
    If you’re having irrepressible thoughts of death, welcome them with all your heart.
    If your body starts showing signs of wear and tear, do not travel to another dimension to fix your thighs.

    Stay put!
    And this is where you go, Rock Star.

    You go into the spiritual realm.
    The dimension where all your dreams once started, and where all your new ideas will come from too.
    Your body is in the real world, yes, but your spirit is not.
    Nor should it ever be.

    Because you were born on the earth, but you are not of the earth. And you never will be. If you have come this far in this blog post then know that no matter how many people played too rough with you, cut your hair, or burdened you with their irrepressible thoughts of death;
    They say nothing about you.

    And we need you to stay up there, with your mind in the stars.

    Your job is not to come meet us over here, rolling through the mud of our emotions;
    Your job is to get up as high as you can!!

    And shine.

    .

  • Then let the day fall by the wayside, Rock Star | 2023 06 24 The day after

    Exactly one year ago, I woke up in an elegant and fully booked hotel, or so they had warned me would be the case because even 16 months in advance, they could see coming there would be three events in and around Groningen, all in the same week.
    If I wanted a room an early booking would be required and I would not get any money back if I would cancel.

    The pandemic with its dramatic drop in bookings and its high rate of cancellations, had tightened the windows for anyone looking for a room, but this hotel, understandably, had really took the time to reverse engineer their methods to make sure that whatever liabilities they had been covering for, were now with their guests.

    And when I arrived 16 months later, the hotel indeed had been fully booked for over half a year.

    The day after, Groningen, 24 June 2022.
    A hotel right next to the park of the concert location.
    I woke up so unbelievably sick from having been on my feet the entire day before, and standing at the rail of a Guns N’ Roses concert the day prior.
    All I could think was “never again” and “Oh God”.
    I barely ate breakfast, which is saying something because I always eat huge ones, in particular in hotels.

    I didn’t regret attending, because to this day I think it may have been the best day of my entire life.
    But I was happy to start the journey home, feel better on my way home already, and have the rest of the afternoon and night to recover.

    Thirty years prior, I had also woken up in a hotel.
    The Hilton, in Rotterdam!
    Next to Central Station, so it was very practical.

    But this one I had not booked months in advance, because I had been saving for it, Dutch guilder by guilder, taking it from my shopping budget every week, or whenever it fell into my pocket somehow.
    And when I had 360 guilder I booked the hotel, about a month prior I think. By telephone and perhaps confirming by fax.

    Then too, I woke up the day after a Guns N’ Roses concert, but the mood could not have been more different.
    Just like I would 30 years after, I had been on my feet the entire day, and due to logistical and a medical problem (as we learned decades later through Google!) the band had been on stage hours later, in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
    23 June 1992

    Contrary to what seems to have turned into one of the unshakable truths of the 90s, Guns N’ Roses being late in Rotterdam was not antagonistic nor a statement of rebellion, nor were there issues with local authorities.
    Who would actually be thanked from the stage.

    The atmosphere had been amazing, but boy what a long day that was!
    And just like 30 years later, the sun had shone, mercilessly, all day. But this time I had been in it, whereas standing first row will protect you from the sun because of the shadow from the stage.
    In many ways 1992, had been more intense than 2022.

    In 1992 I had been standing in the sun, did not have a rail to lean on, yet I had gone out to get a drink in town after arriving in the hotel and taking a shower late at night.
    In the morning I was still so happy and
    I stayed and hung out with new people I had met the night before.

    I did not head home until 2, 3 in the afternoon, and I remember being;
    Exhilarated.
    Thrilled.
    High, but of excitement, nothing chemical.

    The difference between going to Guns N’ Roses and then sleeping in a hotel, thirty years apart, could not have been more stark!

    And yet both times I thought:
    “Yesterday 23 June, was the best day of my life.”

    And here I am, one year after waking up in Groningen.
    Thirty years after waking up in Rotterdam.
    One day after making an important decision.

    I woke up groggy from a series of events that have been going through my mind for weeks now. And yesterday I made a very important decision.
    I broke up with something, understood I had to let it go. But instead of waking up happy, I woke up feeling horrible.

    And I wondered how it is possible that I feel so groggy, so sick, when I DID NOT, go to a Guns N’ Roses concert yesterday!
    Was I that old?!
    That I now wake up like this, for making decisions about things in my life that are no longer fitting?
    Do I now get hangovers from what I would call the natural rocking, of life?

    But this is my message to you, Rock Star:
    These hangovers?
    Whether because you drank, or because you’ve been standing in the sun, on your feet all day, or because apparently things have been bothering you like in my case?
    This grogginess?
    It is a good sign.

    Just like me remembering to be so excited 30 years ago, unstoppable, intensely happy 30 years ago, was a good sign too.

    And just like when you have sex and afterwards, when they are gone and you are alone, the emptiness, the neediness, the clinginess, smack you in the face?
    It’s all a good sign.

    It is a sign something amazing happened. Something moved you, something GOT to you.
    And we will not always have the luxury of it being planned, and of having the day off.
    But we always have the ability to notice that we feel so overtaxed, not able to eat breakfast, or lonely to the bone.
    That a big black hole is consuming us, and yet we cannot make ourselves connect because the emptiness has already made its way into our hearts.

    But know, my beloved Rock Star, that it means you’re still alive.
    Something amazing happened to you, as you were shaken, whether expected or taken by surprise.
    You were literally rocked.
    Which is so much better in so many ways, than being lulled to sleep. So much better, than living under a lie of convenient lies and a planned life.

    Feeling horrible means first and foremost you have NOT lost your ability to FEEL.
    You still, have your biggest asset.
    Your emotions.

    But having said all that?
    If you can?
    If you somehow do have the luxury of taking time off to integrate, to process, to feel your feelings and get a better understanding of why this one hit you so hard?

    Then let this day fall by the wayside, Rock Star.

    .

  • Permission to sell granted, Rock Star | 2023 05 23: Specify. Sell. Repeat.

    The past couple of weeks, I have been coasting.
    Hiding.
    I’ve been absent here.

    I have been doing the exact thing I always say you should not be doing, if you want to build a business, which is;
    To not show up.

    Or, to simplify:
    Show up -> builds business
    Not show up -> does not build business

    And I’m not talking about showing up for already paying clients and for already running programs and projects, but specifically about showing up PUBLICLY.
    And show up SELLING.

    Most independents have not build their business around the act of selling.
    They are built around the practice of doing, of executing the work.
    A yoga teacher has built their business around teaching yoga, not selling it.
    A graphic designer around designing, not selling it.
    And even many “real” businesses, meaning not one person but multiple people working there, are designed around offering the opportunity to buy a product, not around selling them.

    Or the independents or businesses work around very lengthy, complicated , political, behind-the-scenes projects that run for months before any deal is sealed, let alone before anyone gets paid.

    The art of selling, and of investing in something you can easily and happily sell everyday, is an underrated one.
    But it is one of the very few things that will guarantee your success and even survival under the most radically changing conditions.
    Because the time it will take before you find out your average monthly sales are not made, or your year total has severely dropped, will always be a lot longer than if you are used to handling daily or weekly sales totals.

    And if you have long lead times, the number of things you have tried to adapt to the new circumstances, and get your business up and running again, will always be significantly lower than if you get feedback from your sales numbers every day.

    Having monthly or quarterly sales (instead of daily sales) means you do not have your fingers in the pie;
    It puts you at incredible financial risk.

    Now, I know there are entire industries based on these long, business-to-business processes of selling one-million dollar software systems and so on.
    I know.
    Not going to get into that, just hope I made my point that it is worth giving it your best shot to find something that allows you to break away from that, and get cash-flow you can manage daily.
    Instead of praying to the Gods your five big clients will do their side of the deal this year.

    If not selling daily because you are partial to only having a few big clients  is “big player syndrome”, then there is another reason not to sell daily which can be found in particular with service providers on the consumer market:
    Small player syndrome.

    The idea that you are not allowed to ask more than others in your industry, and that you are there primarily to serve your clients, and not to sell or make money.

    Aside from the psychological reasons behind small player syndrome- which are understandable because it does require you to be visible and stand out from “the tribe”- it is important to realize that not providing for “your company” financially, is a dangerous game.
    If your business does not survive, you cannot serve your clients either. So you may want to reconsider, or think of other ways to fund your business f.e. patrons & donations.

    But there is more at stake.

    Money is the bloodline not just of your business, but of your industry as a whole.
    Everything your industry stands for, the message it is here to bring, the  good you are here to do, the lineage you are here to continue from the teachers or artists who came before you and everybody you personally owe for what it is you know, or everybody who has built the business or industry before you;
    You are putting it all in jeopardy.

    The voice that is going to survive, the system that is going to survive, the skillsets that are going to survive, the craftmanship that is going to survive, the businesses and the industries that will stand the test of time;
    Are the ones that make money.

    And to do that, for you to have a healthy business or for an industry to stand the test of time, you/ your industry needs to do two things:
    1. it needs to sell things
    and
    2. it needs to sell different things when the market changes.
    This second point is what is referred to as a change in business model. For example taking a service from brick and mortar business to online.

    If you or your industry have “small business syndrome” you’re not taking selling under (1) seriously.
    You’re facilitating that people can buy from you, if they would really look into it, but you’re not creating opportunities for them to see you and immediately making it clear what they can buy or how they can work with you.
    You’re not actively and creatively engaging in the act of selling.

    And if you or your industry are “big player syndrome” sufferers, with only a few big clients, you are not hands-on enough in your sales to notice your current offer is no longer selling.
    That something has changed and that you should be finding out what, and adjust accordingly.

    Having a daily sales routine is a healthy habit, and very effective to combat both small- as well as big player syndrome.

    Daily selling puts you in that driver’s seat, with your eyes on the road and you’ll build your feel for the market each day, every day.
    Instead of putting it on autopilot and finding out months or years later.

    The reason I was absent from selling, and from this site, is because I am starting a new Dutch business. For my yoga no less!
    An industry where even the biggest players have fallen, and most never even get started to begin with.
    If I would get a penny out of every dollar spent on unused yoga teacher training certificates, word wide?
    I would never have to work again.

    So it took some time to figure out, how to get it right this time. How to build a yoga business that will be profitable.
    A business with a healthy flow of money, that will survive anything that is thrown at it.

    But it all came down to one thing. And it’s the same thing that will guarantee your success, regardless of what industry you are in;
    Find something you can sell.

    Not four times a year to four big clients.
    Not by opening your doors and waiting for people to walk in who are exactly looking for your service or product.
    Not by being a friendly neighborhood whatever, who is uncomfortable wearing their professional boots.

    Find something you can sell;
    And sell it every day.

    Repeat.

    .

  • That strong, need-them-on-board professional who sets the rules of your industry? You, Rock Star. You. | 2023 05 02 : Specify. Sell. Repeat.

    photo “Animal Crossing” by Katrina Cooper-Hinton https://somerandomchick.picfair.com/

    A few days ago, I had a business event. Something that I could not not go to, if I considered myself a professional who could help business owners, artists and Rock Stars.
    It was a unique opportunity to get an understanding of what it was they had to deal with on a daily basis.
    Things specific to their industry.

    From what I have seen so far – and feel free to optimistically disagree with me but –
    So far I have seen every industry being some variation of totally fucked up. Just that the party ending up with the short end of the stick, differs.

    The first option is that the short end of the stick goes to the independent or the entrepreneur/ business. Depending on how they identify.
    This is by far the most common one, in terms of numbers because there is an array of professions you would not even be able to land a payroll job, even if you moved heaven and earth. And hell.
    You simply have no other option than to do your work as an independent professional, and in all probability while having close to zero training, knowledge nor affinity with running a business and making money.
    If I was sarcastic I would say: “Good luck with that one.”
    But actually, it is easy to tackle.

    The key to stepping up your game if you have an identifiable profession in a certain field (with diplomas, a professional association, and the same one business model 99.9 of the industry uses) is to stop seeing yourself as that profession, and start seeing yourself as:
    Independent.
    Business owner.
    Entrepreneur.

    And also to start (if you had not already) seeing yourself as the breadwinner for yourself, your family, your cats, pets and others dependent on you, but also;
    Start seeing yourself as the breadwinner for your future self.

    What would 88 year old you wish they had made in 2023?

    So the majority of “business-owners” working in fucked-up industries comes from professionals who really had no other choice than to work as an independent.
    But they never got the blessing, the freedom, the inspiration, to really rock their business. A
    nd they are tied down by rules (spoken and unspoken) that keep them and their business small.

    The other part of fucked-up-ness comes from industries who either run entirely on the financial market, meaning no actual value is created, and from industries who work around loop holes in legislation and the exploitation of workers, use of natural resources, and producing toxins and waste.
    Nothing stops you from letting your product be manufactured in countries where less strict rules apply.
    In this case the true costs, the short end of the stick, is passed on to workers, poor countries, and onto pollution of the earth as a whole.

    And more long-stick/short-stick areas are created due to privatization of public services.

    This could be a situation limited to the Netherlands but in the 20th century, many professionals in the Netherlands still had a job for, or were compensated by, government organizations.
    However, government sold off our public services, which first showed in  commercial insurance companies being in charge of public health care  (what could possibly go wrong) and foreign companies owning our utilities (water, gas, electricity).
    So far for the long end of the stick.

    Because now, 25 years later, the short end off the stick has also developed in the Netherlands;
    Professionals who can no longer rely on government organizations paying their bills. They now have to juggle allowances, patient-budgets, and are dependent on a myriad of organizations to come up with the funding for what used to be a payroll job or clear and reliable funding structures, for health care professionals.
    In 25 years, waiting lists and people not getting the care they need, have become standard, in Dutch health care and social services.

    So when I say every industry is rigged, I mean there are two categories.

    The long end of the stick of an industry understands how to make money from it.
    And how to draw all that money flow, straight into their pockets.
    Within these industries, the white dove companies are the ones who restrain  and regulate their own business, put clients first, and do not suck dry every pocket at every opportunity.

    The short end of the stick are professionals who have internalized being responsible, dutiful, in service and of service.
    Those who want to be part of the community and create a better world.
    Yet, in the process they are keeping themselves and each other small and accept, and to an extend create, financial risks for themselves and their loved ones.

    There are more reasons and ample examples, explaining why “an industry” is rarely a healthy starting point, if you want to build a business.
    But I think you get the point.

    But there are also plenty of keys, to unlock the gates to greener pastures.
    Ways, to create your own green meadows.

    No one deserves to be bound by the small-thinking of their industry. Where the yoke of being dutiful, would have you struggling in circles forever.

    But we should also have an understanding of how evil is created. An understanding how to keep our business from becoming  a monster that sucks dry or burns down once luscious lands.

    And the way to do that, to prevent both undercharging as well as financially destructive behavior, is by seeing your business through the eyes of your 88 year old self.
    Have you taken care of them?
    Are you making money in a way that supports them?
    But also:
    Have you created a world they want to live in?
    Do they look back on their company, their career, proudly?

    Maybe they are still in business!
    Your 2023 self could design a business so that it can both financially support your 88 year old self;
    As well as be a source of joy and connection, for the rest of your life.

    I didn’t go to the business event. I wanted to, and a two hour afternoon nap and 7 fudge chunks later, I still did not see I was resenting it.
    Until the hour drew near, and I wondered;
    “What do I want more, cleaning my house or going to the business event?”
    And then (this could have saved me xxx calories and 2 hours) I realized I didn’t want to go.
    So I didn’t.

    But I kept thinking about it; Why?
    Why didn’t I want to go?
    And I realized it is because I started Catacombe, this company for Rock Stars, artists and business owners, not because I don’t know how problematic most if not all industries are.
    I started it because I think that’s looking in the wrong place.

    We are not our industries.
    We are artists, Rock Stars, business owners, and we need to start thinking and acting for ourselves.
    And start being here for our clients, our customers, and our fans.

    The way to do this is to ask yourself;
    “How can I create a product or service, that I would love to sell everyday?”

    Not, whatever it is that is common for your industry to sell.
    Not, what you think you should sell, or what would sell.
    No.
    But instead ask yourself:

    What is the thing, delivered in the easiest, most fun way for me personally, that would excite me to be in business?*

    So that next time you get an invitation to an event in your industry?
    You can go if you want to, but you never have to.

    Because you are now what we all desire to be;
    Free.

  • video: 004 Rock your biz, based on YOU (not your industry) | Social preferences

    The book I’m showing is about a Dutch Rock Star & artist Herman Brood, who was great at running his own art business! “You print your own money,” people said about his drawings.

    At Catacombe, we explore the concepts, ideas and beliefs, that are at the very heart of being a Rock Star.
    Values that are often the opposite to what society has us believe are true.
    And yet;
    These Rock Star principles are intertwined with what we all immediately recognize as worldly and personal success.

    But more importantly;
    They are at the core of living a fulfilling, purposeful life.

    At the Rock Your Business YouTube channel I translate these concepts to what they mean for the way we do business.
    Rock Your Business is one of the three channels associated with Catacombe. You can find all three at the bottom of this post.

    Today at the Rock Your Business channel
    004 Rock your biz, based on YOU (not your industry) | Social preferences

    You can check the description box of the video on YouTube, for full context, but this is what I would like to highlight:

    If you think of the business model of your industry, what social skills does that model require?
    And what if those are not your strongpoints;
    How can you run things your way?

    I distinguish four different layers, or types, of business:
    1. The Community Businesses
    2. The Business level- Businesses
    3. Art-level businesses
    4. And the fourth level: Rock Star level businesses
    source May 2022, THE SYSTEM

    This is also the drawing on the board behind me, with the green money flow going through all different layers.

    Printable: THE SYSTEM (May 2022)

    An extremely useful document, for when you are business owner, artist or Rock Star!

  • What even the Rock Star doesn’t know about their craft. | 2023 03 28 Top offers 3: “THE ROCK STAR” (final offer in this series)

    19 March, 2023, Me (Suzanne Beenackers)

    Let me guess your most unappreciated talent, Rock Star.
    ….
    Yeah…
    Sex, I’m gonna go with sex.

    Oh, I’m kidding!
    I wasn’t guessing, I’m dead certain that is your hidden quality.

    Not hidden as in that nobody knows, but hidden in the sense of:
    Underappreciated or even unappreciated.
    Never mentioned by anyone other than admirers who whisper it behind your back. Or scream it to your face, depending on the context as well as their social skills.

    Hidden in the sense of: Never brought to the table by any professional concerned with your mental, physical or financial well-being.
    Your artistic accomplishments?
    Oh, I definitely think 99 out of a 100 professionals with a responsibility or direct interest in the artistic side of your career, will mention it.
    Don’t think the world of fine arts, and that includes performance art and that includes rock n’ roll- don’t think they are in the dark about where your Rock Star power comes from.

    And these people in arts know the details, the very physics, of how these powers work. Whereas the ones concerned with the financial success of an artist usually got it all backwards:
    They think the artist being in a committed relationship, hurts sales.
    That it is the actual fact of the artist being available versus unavailable, that determines their Rock Star power.
    But they got it all backwards:
    It is not the knowledge that they are married, or not heterosexual, or a relationship being out in the open, that has ever hurt the career of the artist.
    What did hurt, was when it changed them.

    When the relationship started eating away their Rock Star charisma and sexual zest, from the inside out.
    THAT, is what hurts sales.

    And it is also what hurts creative, artistic and performance quality in general, but like I said the people concerned with those aspects of art and music, know that.

    It’s just that the rest of the world still clings to this idea that we can somehow put a Rock Star on a leash, give them domestic responsibilities and an extra sticker when they are faithful;
    And somehow magically NOT kill what we liked about them in the first place.
    What everybody liked about them, what has made or could make them millions, and put bread on the table for a lot more families than just their own.
    That, is what diminishes Rock Star power.
    Not their relationship status.

    After this three things can happen.

    The first is: They just walk out.
    This is absolutely my favorite, but it is very rare. This is the Rock Star getting their act together overnight, ends it all, and is completely unavailable for any comments later on.
    They just vanish from your life, and never return.
    The only way to see them again, is to sue them and drag their Rock Star ass to court.

    Then, there’s the second one, who blows it up but with both the energy-save  as well as the ego-save buttons On.
    What they’ll do is have an affair, miss some (or as many as needed) appointments and agreements in a very sloppy way, until the other party is so angry they blow up the relationship.
    Everyone’s ego is saved:
    The Rock Star’s ego is saved because they blame the fail on the partner being totally unreasonable, and the partner’s ego is saved, because it wasn’t their fault and they can blame it all on the Rock Star.
    This is the most common way, in particular because the Rock Star uses the aggression and disappointment of the partner, to do all the heavy lifting.
    They don’t have to do anything, except being an asshole at some strategic moments that really count.

    But sadly, what happens most often, is that the Rock Star doesn’t make it out.
    Oh, there’s a happy ending alright!
    Nobody cheats, nobody blows anything up. Hell, even the quarreling and the bickering just stop…. ‘Cause the Rock Star has given up, Baby.

    This scenario, the most common one, the most sad one, and the reason I so very strongly believe in the mission of this company Catacombe – and the scenario that definitely includes people who never got to see themselves as Rock Stars in the first place, despite their Rock Star power-
    This third scenario is that the Rock Star dies.

    They are talked into believing the only way to become good and accepted, and successful as a human being at large, is to be like other people, and to act normal.
    This is a brainwash, a programming that can usually be blamed on the parents, who do not recognize the star power of their offspring but very well recognize the disruptive nature of their child;
    And end it.

    But they would have never been successful if society did not reinforce this behavior. If educators, peers, employers, and now in modern day social media; If they did not conspire together to finish off anything that could think on their own.
    Rebel on their own.
    And fuck, not on their own but with whomever lights a fire in them, and the feeling being mutual.
    To fuck whomever they damn well please.

    There is an unspoken, widespread understanding, that that?
    Is dangerous.

    So the Rock Stars are brainwashed and belittled, sex-shamed, slut-shamed, and their qualities go by unrecognized unless they are lucky enough to also possess other creative skills;
    Then their sexually explosive, independent Rock Star qualities are seen as an add-on.
    Something that gives the art, or the other usable qualities, a certain charm, but that is ultimately nothing more but a topping.
    Not content.

    Some manage to escape with an explosive midlife crisis, but those are rare.
    But if you do know someone blowing up their life in midlife, please send them this post, okay?
    They might need it.

    Because in general, once scenario 3, the average-nothing-special-about-you-ness of it all, has its fangs in you?
    -and that’s usually under 25 years old-
    Oh, you’re out.
    Try coming back from that one.

    Even people ending those specific relationships, that they feel are contracting them, usually do it to recreate the same sexual prison with a new person.
    Not to now let their best art come through them.
    Let alone that they do it to really take that sexual power and talent to the next level.

    To really take their enigmatic sexual Rock Star powers – that I believe God, the Universe themselves bestowed upon them!-
    To really take the job of rocking THAT, seriously and attend to it?
    Develop it, nurture it, get good at it?
    Understand the mathematics of it, its logic, and at the same time the magic?
    Never heard anyone do that……

    And I understand that… because even I saved this one for last!
    This is the third and final post, in my Top Offers series. The other two posts I wrote in this series, were far easier:
    The first post was for the Business Owner.
    The second for the Artist.
    And this third one, for the Rock Star.

    This is my definition of a Rock Star:

    A Rock Star is a performance artist, who can raise sexual energy, knows how to hold it, and how to move it.
    They can transfer this sexual energy onto others.

    A Rock Star is the physical embodiment of freedom.

    I have just contacted a photographer, about options to use pictures he took of Bon Jovi in their earliest years.
    Because in these pre-Slippery When Wet years of the band, you can already see the star power of Jon Bon Jovi, on stage.
    He was the youngest member of his own band, which he brought together only after he’d already gotten a record deal as a solo artist.

    Jon Bon Jovi had been in bands and on stage, since he was a teen. And I mean 15, 16 years old. Really young.
    I once encountered an interview that he regretted not having taken time off to work a summer on the boulevard. He thought he would have been good at it.
    But he had been a driven teen, and had set out to make it in the music industry. He didn’t give himself time to goof around, when others did.

    But when you listen and watch those oldest shows – in 1984 the year of their first show in The Netherlands opening for KISS in Zwolle, Jon was just 22 years old!
    Bon Jovi – Live at IJsselhallen | Full Concert In Audio | Zwolle 1984(audio only)
    – you can hear their Rock Star quality.

    In 1984 they played songs from their first record, Bon Jovi-Bon Jovi (1984) but added acapella intros, adlibs (improvised lyrics), and depth and layers the original tracks on their record didn’t have.
    Because none of them were beginning performers, in particular not the now
    22 year old Jon Bon Jovi.

    He was really showing up for the audience, and did not hide behind the music, nor the lyrics.
    He did not hide behind the fact that he was in a band, either.
    Jon Bon Jovi’s stage presence was as Rock Star as Rock Star can get, and as a fan you don’t hear me complain.

    It’s just that now that I started this company Catacombe, and I am getting my head around these Rock Star concepts, and putting words to something that has been repressed effectively because it didn’t get words other than accusatory, belittling ones;
    Words, hardly more favorable than flaws that were passable as long as you made sure the other things were really good;
    It is only now that I wonder:
    What would have happened if frontman Jon Bon Jovi had focused on THAT?

    ‘Cause they got better, Bon Jovi.
    New Jersey (1988) was according to many, including me, their best album. And every music critic and cynic that was not on board yet, was seen and overcome by These Days (1995), after which Bon Jovi was a respectable band who had outgrown singing about the backseats of cars.

    They got better artistically, musically.

    But it all makes me wonder…. it all makes me wonder;
    What if Jon Bon Jovi, had taken that charisma, that Rock Star power, that rare energy for which there are no words and that is bestowed upon only the few and the few get shamed for it;
    What would have happened if THAT had gotten the thought, attention, priority, money, time, stage, and opportunity to develop?

    What would happen if we stopped looking for other things to validate it, and start with the very thing the few lucky ones in 1984 must have been able to see dripping off that stage in Zwolle and beyond?

    Sex.
