creativity flows where the heart goes | What Do Rock Stars Need To Hear Today 2024 09 24

creativity flows where the heart goes

It’s why an author’s debut novel has the most urgency.
And why a band’s first album makes the deepest cut.

Pursue the topics that set your soul on fire, and your best work will come.
Without even trying.

At least once a week I used to lose myself in unbridled fantasies about how orderly and powerful my life would look, if I was a normal person who calmly ran and built her service company where all would find peace and solace in yoga, mentoring, and read articles that lifted the heaviness of their burdened souls.

All the while knowing perfectly well that I am ruled by my creativity.
And that merely the act of fantasizing that way, is already a testament to how deep the rabbit hole goes.
When topics most people are drawn to or emotionally invested in, get visited by me:
Never.

All popular Dutch television shows from the past ten years or so?
Watched zero episodes.
Because if you have your own television set in your head, things just work differently.

The thing doesn’t have an Off button though.
Which is why The Inner-World tv series is playing pretty much all day and, if all goes well, automatically switches to one of the After Dark Channels, at night.
Shifting to a mellower mood, more suitable for the time of day and ending active thinking mode.

Although my ability to really dive into a topic did not become apparent until the topic became yoga, earlier adaptations of my desire to study things I am interested in would be Brad Pitt, Bon Jovi, or the person I was in love with at the time.
I also did a lot of work studying Madonna, in particular (as far as we’re talking about the first expressions of my artistic roots) from 1990 to 1994, what I would call her Erotica Era.
After her True Blue/ Like a Prayer albums, which I didn’t even own, I could feel her work was changing in 1990, and becoming more aligned for me.

My interests dominating my thinking, has been a lifelong fact.

However the walls of where we are called out to take responsibility for how we spend our time, and to work towards our goals or at the very least to do  something productive, useful, and in service of someone or something;
Well, sooner or later those walls will have closed in.

At some point, on a cognitive level, you will have started believing your creativity is a self-care activity with which you can reward yourself after you have fulfilled your worldly duties.

Only to see yourself sacrificing sleep, relationships, being on time, exercising, daylight, meals, and keeping the house clean or at least above the level of a stable;
In order to attend to your creative flow.

My personal boundary was that I never sacrificed personal hygiene, but the rest went overboard in a heartbeat.
All, to follow creative flow.

So if that’s you, I hear you. I know this is madness, and that you (like me) are probably wishing that you still had that luxury of being able to cut watching tv, to get more creative time.
Instead of cutting the parts that would have been so nice to have in your life.

And also the moment that you start doing your version of fantasizing about how beautifully organized and contained your life would look, if you did not have this Passion ravaging anything that looks like control, intention and just general Life Together-ness.

I got you, and I understand.

But you know as well as I do that your creativity is the real thing. And that wishing for a less chaotic life would mean cutting yourself off from everything that inspires you. Meaning from everything you love.

Even though I loved fantasizing about my creativity to go, deep down I knew that to wish for creativity to go, means closing your heart and no longer being able to be in meaningful relationships.
Not with my work, and not with other people.

Ultimately?
All those moments fantasizing about how life would look without creativity, or maybe it were all the hours thinking about marketing and business, who is to say;

But ultimately, it paid off.
Big time.

And maybe this is what will help you too in staying true to what your creative heart wants, while also having the satisfaction of being productive.

I will be speaking about this in the upcoming years as well, but today is the first time I mention it.
Because it’s really fresh!
But what I am about to tell you has silenced the ongoing battle in my head.
I no longer fantasize about how clean my life would look without creativity.

If you are a creative who loses hours in their creative work, but also wants to be in their business.
Someone who understands that in 2024 and probably for the rest of our lives, being an artist is about being visible as much as it is about creating the art?
And that our real job is to sell it? Not to create it, since that, give or take,  goes automatically.

I have found the way to silence the voices of doubt, and to let your art work for you. Not against you.

I call it Portfolio Marketing, and I will speak about it frequently.
This is how it works;

You let your marketing, your daily messaging -> BE <- your creative work.

So for some of you, the creative work already is the marketing.
Like Andy Warhol used to be an illustrator of fashion, early on in his career.  These drawings are now art of course, just like all his other art that was  immediately created as such.
If, in 2024, making reels is your actual creative expression, then that is your marketing.
Every reel is then not just content, but providing you save or post them where they are preserved, they also build your portfolio.
Naturally, you can also be an artist who includes temporality in their art. Then the art having vanished after 24 hours becomes part of the art, and although the piece itself is not preserved and not added to a physical portfolio, the art has existed.
The immaterial art portfolio is still being built, but more in the way like performance art.

So you stick with your own dominant creative expression, and that is your marketing.

Contrary to how normal businesses do marketing, where what they post is tailored to building the audience, and therefor repurposing and even buying other people’s content (365 Days of Content bundles etc.) in order to get the job done;
What I call Portfolio Marketing means what you create to post should be Art in itself, or it should be related to things that were already in your portfolio.
For example a quote from one of your books, with a sales link to the book.

Now this is not rigid of course.
There can still be services you sell, or areas that you speak on, where you create a different sort of content that is not part of your dominant creative expression.
For example a written post on YouTube, when your dominant expression is being a videographer.
These written posts will never be collected and studied, and mused over what you meant, and so on.
But your videos could end up in a museum in 2060.

In this case the videos are the core part of Portfolio Marketing, and the post is not.

Working from the concept of Portfolio Marketing, gives direction to your creative inspiration (and you can engage guilt free)
And at the same time makes sure you do not spent your creative hours on marketing that ultimately does not have your heart in it.

Naturally creativity can also express in the service or product you are offering.
This is definitely a more daredevil thing to do, and the stakes are a lot higher -leading your creative vein into art that can serve “just” as marketing is definitely less risky-
but it can be done.

What you then get, is that you are allowing the actual thing you are selling to change.
And the only thing constant?
Is you.

This is by far the most Rock Star thing anyone can do.
And I invite you to get comfortable with that idea as well.
To give it time to grow on you, that in the end, one day, you’re ONLY going to create whatever it is you want to create.
And sell it.

Then the whole marketing layer has dropped and it becomes to be building your Portfolio.

And this can be art (as in a painting f.e.) but it can also be a service.
Selling a new course every few weeks.

When your audience has grown accustomed to knowing you as a creator, a gate to another level has opened, where they are starting to come for you.
No longer your work.
This is what I call the Rock Star level, no longer Artist level.

It’s not a hierarchy, both models come with their advantages and disadvantages.

A business sells a generic service or product;
An Artist or a company with an “Art based” strategy, sells a unique service or product, brand or system;
But a Rock Star sells whatever they want.

This is the level where you have truly outgrown your business owner- service provider-jacket, and are now completely free to cross over to any other industry, at will.
You can do and sell whatever you please, as long as it is consistent with the values you stand for.

It is an interesting exercise to feel if that brings up any resistance and if you can bypass that.

Can you give yourself permission to let the art come out, in whatever way it wants?
And accept that you should perhaps resist calling yourself a * fill in any craft * because there is no way of telling what your medium will be in the future?

Can you let the art be the art?

And accept the possibility that the art was something else all along.
You.

1. the earthly plane
Your possessions, worldly matters, income streams, worries and responsibilities you fear you can’t meet.
A helpful term could be how do things look from the perspective of financial freedom, or worldly freedom.

2. your purpose
What is the work you love doing, what are the moments big or small, that you know you are aligned. Has God told you, what you’re here for?
This is about creative freedom, or even karmic freedom.
Are you free to do the work, that is yours?

sell the mystery

In the age of social media there are two options;
One is to message anywhere between daily and all day or at least consistently.

But if your energy is heavier and slower, more grounded;
Let your absence do the seducing.

I absolutely adore professionals who are on the socials every day.
Or who launch their new thing visiting every podcast that will have them, and do whatever it takes getting their foot in the door, with the ones that don’t want them!
Yet.

Scanning their search results or visiting these people’s timeline comes with a sense of anticipation and excitement!
It’s often, and perhaps even preferably, predictable content. The exact same message, day after day.
Week after week.
Season in, season out.
But always presented with an aliveness that has brought them where they are today.

Sometimes you know them so well, you even know their specials by heart.
And yet, it never ceases to mesmerize you.
I love everything about those professionals;
Their drive.
Their energy.
Their stories and their current offer wrapping you up, like a blanket.

For a few minutes, you’re in their world, and whether you buy something or not, it doesn’t really matter.
You feel refreshed.
Ready to take on whatever it is, you were procrastinating on.

But if being such a powerhouse Rock Star messenger is not you, then cultivate the not being on social media.
Being offline.
Having adventures of which you show us, but a sliver.
Post your photo quoting Rilke or Axl Rose, or both.

Enchant us with your absence, and feed our voracious minds tiny little things to chew on.
Starve us.
Be cruel to us.
Draw us into your Theater of the Unknown,
Your Dome of the Desired.
Promise us every dream and unfulfilled passion coming true.

Or at least hint, boldly, at its possibility.

Leaving all options wide open, wink, and sell us a ticket first row.

lay the smallest brick or something bigger | What Do Rock Stars Need To Hear Today 2024 01 23

lay the smallest brick or something bigger

It was gonna say “lay the smallest visible brick” until I realized that this suggested the foundational structure would end up missing!
In whatever it is we are building.

But do you know what the smallest visible bricks build?
Relationships.

That’s your structure right there.

If there was one business lesson I could tell my younger self, it’s that a sustainable business is relational, not transactional.

It’s not: You buy something from me, and in exchange you give me money.

It’s also not: We have a relationship because you buy from me.

It’s:
We have a relationship, and there are times when we choose to fill that in with you buying something from me.

And personally, the more sale-sey the post, the more I like reading it from someone else.
It excites me, to see or read someone being enthusiastic about what it is they sell.
And I also like reading their stories, providing there is a call-to-action at the end of how I can work with them.

Unpopular opinion, I know.
But it is why you will never see me writing a blogpost, without a what I sell at the bottom.

So!
When I say “lay the smallest brick”, which means to build a little bit on your business or career, I do not mean invisible things such as writing something in your notebook, or doing anything invisible or behind the scenes.
I also do not mean approaching one potential client.
Not if you’re pressed for time- then I do not want you to choose that.

I mean:
What is the smallest brick, the smallest public post on your social media, that you can identify for yourself?
This is your “MDR”, minimal daily requirement.

This is what you can commit to, so that the people who follow you know who you are and preferably- but you don’t have to if you can’t or won’t-
preferably they are reminded of, or informed about, what you’re selling that day.

Example social media post (smallest brick):
photo: guitar unboxing
text: “thank you Gibson for this amazing new *insert type of guitar*!”
Call to action:
“She can’t wait to take the stage!
Come see us soon: *insert tour calendar*”

Unless you’re going all in on exclusivity, mystery and unavailability?
A Rock Star’s smallest visible brick, their minimum daily requirement in 2024 to keep building their career;
Is a social media post.

video: 002 WELCOME TO THE ROCK STAR UNIVERSE | Don’t build a business; Create a world

The book behind me is The Decade That Rocked by Mark Weiss. Available worldwide.

At Catacombe, we explore the concepts, ideas and beliefs, that are at the very heart of being a Rock Star.
Values that are often the opposite to what society has us believe are true.
And yet;
These Rock Star principles are intertwined with what we all immediately recognize as worldly and personal success.

But more importantly;
They are at the core of living a fulfilling, purposeful life.

At the Rock Your Business YouTube channel I translate these concepts to what they mean for the way we do business.
Rock Your Business is one of the three channels associated with Catacombe. You can find all three at the bottom of this post.

To shelter or to shine: you choose how you hold your umbrella, Rock Star | 2023 02 24 Rock Star Principles 1 Umbrella

Umbrella up! 2022 07 22 Op t Eiland, Nijmegen. Annual festivals surrounding the Four Day Marches.

What they don’t tell you as a business owner, is that your success rarely depends on however well it is you do what you do;
But on however well it is you are able to sell it.

And for a very long time, I thought that independents were actually fooled into thinking we had a profession.
That regardless of how much money and hours and accreditation we had, ultimately we were either all marketeers and sales people.
Or we’re all history.
That having a profession was a luxury only people in a job had.

I thought the most honest answer any independent or business owner could give to what it was they do was:
“I am a marketeer.”
Because ultimately, that was what was going to pay the bills.

But I no longer think like that, and I have to say it makes life a lot sweeter.
Not because I don’t like marketing, I do!
But because it was basically believing we work two jobs: The one people pay us for, and the one we actually have to prioritize to stay in business (marketing).

The reason I changed my mind is because I now believe in the Umbrella theory.
It consists of two parts:
Umbrella up or down.

Umbrella up☂️
If you are in this mode, you are holding the space for your clients, for your business, for your profession.
This is when you will FEEL like your profession (a shop owner, a service provider, a trader), it will feel very authentic.
But what you do is you are actually a guide.

Umbrella down (and waving it!)🌂
This is you in marketing and selling mode. In rebel mode, in Having Things To Say mode!
This is where the people who are also rebels will feel wildly attracted to you, but the people who like the umbrella up, and want stability and shelter, will not like it when you go around doing your marketing waving your umbrella.

So do I still think marketing is important?
Yes.
But I think that if you are providing proverbial shelter in your business for long-term customers, you should just use your calm, stable energy, to sell yourself and not fold up your umbrella.
Let the space under your umbrella draw the people in.

Whereas when you have a rebel personality, and you want full creative and financial freedom, ask what you want, offer what you want, and have complete freedom and authority over your business and your life?
Well, keep the umbrella down, and wave it around with all your heart, so we can see you!

I also drew and wrote out these principles, here it is:

Rock Star Principles 1 Umbrella A and B Suzanne Beenackers Catacombe Nijmegen

Up or down;
Use the umbrella mode that you love and rock, Rock Star!

Meet your Mad Crazy Person (MCP), Rock Star | 2022 12 27

image from the movie Elvis

Recently, I realized that I AM a writer;
Sleep-deprived, time-pressed, recovering from sickness?
I’ll write.
I’ve traded writing for exercise, for seeing daylight, I’ve traded it for sleep and I’ve traded it for meals.
I’ve traded it for careers, sans question.

I’ve not yet traded writing for relationships, but that is because I have marginalized relationships altogether.
I don’t find it ethical to write about my relationships, but as a consequence, I have an understanding my involvement will be limited at best.
And non-existent if needed, as ultimate consequence of accepting that my relationship with my writing desk comes first.
I don’t want to write but I need to, if I have any desire of staying mentally sane without spiritually dying.

Sure, I could numb myself in a way that my creativity would die. In fact, I’m not even sure that this may not still be required.
That if I fail, I will no longer be able to afford to be creative.
But, as they say in Lord of the Rings, but it is not this day.
(“This day we fight!” * battle cry * )

The reason I am guilt-free writing today, is because I have marked this, the blog you’re reading now, as marketing.
Although this blog definitely satisfies my creative urge, it is not an artistic expression, but a message to you.

This is a message for you, Rock Star.

The Crazy Mad Person in me, must write you.
The Colonel Parker in me, must write you.
The Jon Bon Jovi in me, must write you.
But I am getting ahead of myself.

Suffice to say Catacombe is not my only blog.
And my main writing name is a different one entirely. In essence, the “I AM” a writer, from the first paragraph, is partially or entirely, a different persona.
The part of me that absolutely needs to write, even if it would cost her her life;
She doesn’t write this.

In the same way, YOUR artistic side, your work in its purest form, the work that if I let you dream and say “Sky is the limit” –
That work?
Is probably very specific.

You will not come up with 10 different skills you’d be mastering, 10 different businesses you would run or 10 different markets you would be serving until the end of time, if I just told you to think about what you’d do, if nothing was required of you.

I will try to give you examples, about how specific your answer too, would probably be. Based on guessing, but it’s just to give you an idea.

I think Axl Rose from Guns N’ Roses, when given the chance or at least if he had to choose, would “only”  write songs.
Whether sleep deprived, or recovering from illness, happy or sad?
He’d grab a notepad to write down lyrics, or an instrument to work on a song.

But Slash is someone who lives to be on stage. Which is why he’s in two bands, Guns N’ Roses and Slash ft. Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators.
I will not deny he works his ass off to be in great shape, and give an excellent show! But that’s all extra.
That’s a cherry on top.
Being on stage is something that gives him so much energy and purpose, all he requires to do it is a pulse.

In the 20th century, Slash was addicted to drugs and alcohol.  Axl must have done his share as well, yet Axl also (and this probably saved him) had a brutal exercise regime on some mega-stairmaster nobody could work on because it was set at so heavy.
Even if he wanted to, Axl would not have been able to let himself “go” the way Slash could, because Slash’s predominant artistic expression, is to be on stage.

When Slash comes home from touring, he finds it difficult to settle, where Axl (proverbially!) could go for years without seeing someone. Just like most writers 😉

So your dominant creative expression, is the one you could do half-dead, sleep-deprived, hungry, sad, or on half a bottle of Jack Daniels.
You will know what this is.

And as I just showed you, I see this playing out differently in Slash and Axl.

Now for the final missing piece – and again, I’m using a bit of my imagination here, but I think it will benefit you in understanding why the Mad Crazy Person (let’s call it an MCP) is critical in achieving Rock Star results –
for the final comparison we’ll go to Jon Bon Jovi, who was very ambitious from when he was an early teen.

Jon Bon Jovi was single-mindedly focused on becoming a rock n’ roll star, and this determined ev’rything.

He was his own PR person, his own agent, his own manager, damn he was his own fanclub if needed!
From the get go his musical efforts focused on:
-being SEEN and being HEARD!
Preferably on stage.
-collaborations
Looking for people to write music with, record music with, play in a band with. Do business with.
-marketing and selling
Jon Bon Jovi intuitively seemed to apply the three golden marketing rules:
Know, Like and Trust.
Know:
Even in the earliest interviews he tells the people WHO he is, who the band members are, where they are from.
Like:
He always makes it about being there for the kids, the fans.

Trust:
He will tell you what they’re up to in the upcoming 6 to 12 months, where you can see them, what album you can buy.

The trust comes from him telling you about their upcoming year; but on a way more subtle level, also addressing your upcoming year!
This picture you’re being served of Bon Jovi’s future, has got you in it.

Jon Bon Jovi was, is, and will always be, first and foremost a brilliant marketeer.
He understands rock n’ roll stars aren’t born;
they are created.

And that is the Crazy Mad Person from the title.

Crazy, is not the craziness of me writing for my most exclusive blogs where I will still be showing up in my last, my most quiet days.

Mad, is not the madness of Axl Rose working on Chinese Democracy album for so long it ultimately became the most expensive rock record of all time.
Nor does crazy or mad refer to the unbelievable things Slash did in the 20th century, as the tagline of his autobiography states:
“It seems excessive … but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.”

No.
The Crazy and the Mad are what is required to push you into the limelight. To sell not just your work, but YOU, to your audience.

Jon Bon Jovi was his own CMP, and Madonna was her own CMP.
But most stars have other people stepping into that vacancy for being a star’s CMP. Sometimes that works out, more often it doesn’t.
But it’s not the 20th century anymore.
The landscape has shifted so dramatically it is almost impossible not to be your own CMP.

The chance that you manage to create an audience for your work is much higher than a publisher, record company, or employer creating a space or stage for your work to be received.

In the movie Elvis you can see his manager, Colonel Parker. This is a good and recent example, of what I suggest you start being for yourself.
Like Colonel Parker, you should be on the lookout for deals and ways to make money by selling what you have to offer.
Which is not Elvis at your disposal;
But you.

You need to be your own Colonel Parker;
Shrewd.
Ruthless.
Talking to the right people at the right time, and taking chances and liberties more often than not!

But more than that you need to be your own Jon Bon Jovi;
Always tell people who you are.
Where you’re going.
And how they can be in it.

There’s nothing crazy about that.
